Biologist, baker, Eat This Podcast maker. I live in Rome, like to walk and ride my bicycle, and am probably too opinionated.

@ascentale@sfba.social @Kleen@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A4. I’ve done one day excursions taking the bike by train and riding to a different train station to come home. They're fun and get me to parts I wouldn't otherwise visit. The only trip with more than two moes of transport was a multiday trip from Treviso to Venice that required a ferry boat to get from the Lido back to Mestre and the train home. Some great cycle paths in the Veneto. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social A8. Also, from this week back in 2007, when Critical Mass Roma was still capable of attracting hundreds of riders, me holding my Raleigh road bike in triumph over my head in the middle of the Forum with the Colosseum in the background. This popped up on my website so I thought it only right to share here. #bikenite

@ascentale@sfba.social @FourT4@mastodonapp.uk @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1. Home in Rome, as ever. And no, I have never booted a tyre. In fact, before coming here, I had not been aware of the practice. Most of my punctures have not involved large cuts to the tyre, so it never seemed necessary. But at least now I know what to do if I have to. #bikenite

Another investigation reveals just how desperate the food industry is to avoid any kind of regulation or even advice that might affect sales. Cryptospora cases continue to explode despite being “under control”. Things are quite a lot better in Europe, which is also being told to do more for pulses and beans. Waves of interest in nutrition and rising interest in the warm Middle ages round out this week’s Eat This Newsletter https://buttondown.com/jeremycherfas/archive/etn-310-focussed/ #newsletter #food #farming

@neatnik@social.lol It’ll be interesting to see whether you get any kind of reply. I told someone recently that even if they were not on substack I would not feel able to support them if they continued to use absurd genAI “art” for no reason other than to break up their wall of text. Crickets. But the next issue used images from the Library of Congress.

@MarkBrigham@universeodon.com @ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social That's something I want to do but I worry about how to protect the camera and lens from damaging bumps. I don't want to wear a backpack, and I worry that in a pannier they would be too susceptible. What's your solution? #bikenite

I got phished, because I failed to see the warning signs and ignored the one I did notice. But I do have questions. Did the scummers actually know that I was expecting a delivery, or was I just extra-unlucky? https://jeremycherfas.net/blog/phished-again

Edited to correct stupid typo.

@samueljohnson@mstdn.social There is always that problem, I agree. And no, I haven’t seen them. But there is a roost in a big cedar nearby, and the timing is right, and The Squeeze says she heard them the previous day. I’ve got much better mics, but then would need to record separately and feed the audio to the analyzer and frankly I’m not that bothered.
