@s10n@mastodon.social @matt@oslo.town bottle caps are a disproportionate share of what washes up on beaches. Whether it's an issue for you depends on whether you prefer a right to pollute or to have a clean beach and generally an environment freer of non-biodegradable waste.

They milked this and every other nonsense to fool the credulous. If you don't know any credulous voters you're fortunate but my guess would be that the AfD supporters contain many.

@agowa338@chaos.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu I visited Germany during the extended Brexit debates in the UK and found my German friends generally well informed about it, even watching British parliamentary debates as a form of after dinner entertainment. Of course, they were fluent in English and well-traveled.
Migration and lies and misinformation about it is a hot button for the far right everywhere, from "eating cats and dogs" to allegedly getting preferential treatment.

@agowa338@chaos.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Well, it was hard to keep up with the torrent of lies. The vacuum cleaner guff was a popular example of the "EU's faceless bureacrats' control freakery".
The British prefer no regulation where possible. Thus, on the morning of the Grenfell fire in London the Conservative Party had a meeting scheduled to plan a bonfire of building regulations (hurriedly cancelled). They're now making up for it with a massive increase in building regulations, esp for tall buildings. 🙄

They are technologically illiterate, naive about the collateral effects, subjected to lobbying by both big tech firms and law enforcement that always wants more surveillance and uses horror stories effectively. In addition, some are religious fundamentalists with latent authoritarian instincts.
None of that amounts to corruption.

No, the EU isn't overstepping. It's defending the interests of EU consumers from unregulated and unaccountable neoliberal capitalism and doing so on behalf of and with the support of member states, every one of which is a democracy.

Hardly surprising from an Eton-educated son of a former colonial administrator and senior member of British intelligence services who "accidentally" (entirely by chance!) became governor of a province in Iraq.
His diagnosis of the UK's lack of seriousness: 🎯.

If that happens you might need to reset router to re-enable OR set set a static IP on PC in order to log in to router. It's (a bit) like locking your keys in the car. Fixable but inconvenient.

@johnnyryan@eupolicy.social The indictment is clear and warranted. I don't see Ireland offering to recuse itself unless the rest of EU were to make up the revenue shortfall, which seems unlikely. Ireland refusing to sacrifice itself is not hard to understand after the sovereign bailed out German and other hedge funds and is still dealing with a debt overhang.
The bigger picture and long term trajectory of transatlantic relations likely changed yesterday & may be a more fruitful focus?

I've never seen it but I have read that it has featured videos of torture and people having their throats cut (taken during the conflict in Bosnia, supposedly)*. I have no objection to that kind of content being taken down and feel it probably ought to be illegal everywhere. A better solution than surveilling the communications of entire populations.

Actions, like not wearing masks or not getting vaccinated during a pandemic, and uses of some technologies, have consequences for others, not just you.
We have already seen plenty of cases of US abuse of the rights of EU citizens via tech firms and the current US govt would like nothing better than to destroy the EU. Thanks but no thanks.

In any case the EU regulates for the single market and if you don't like it your choices are to break the law, lobby for deregulation, or move to a place where corporations don't have to obey the laws, if they even exist.
