So, this is a weird one, but if anyone thinks they might be interested in seeing (online) a work-in-progress showing of a verbatim theatre project to do with Classical Greek archaeology and the 19th Century, DM me your email for an invitation.

@Remittancegirl@mstdn.social This is what capers look like in bloom. I think they might be my favourite flower.

This is some mind-blowing science here: the engine propelling bacteria - a complex structure made of molecules, powered by protons.

This was all compounded by the way they refused to understand that Αθάνατος (it means immortal and is the common Greek name - like century plant in English - for the particular agave species that is widely naturalised here) is a. not a native plant and b. not hugely different from its cousins that are cultivated for their fiber (sisal etc) and their sap (syrup, tequila).

@clew@ecoevo.social Actually, they really struggled with hemp, too. The seed, the fiber, the psychoactive buds - just couldn’t accept they were the same plant. As with agave, one of the sticking points was the Greek common name. They knew hemp was a kind of rope, but everyone knows κανναβούρι is birdseed.

Boosting this mostly because I am entranced by the seed-saving process described. @wavesculptor@climatejustice.social

@sarahdalgulls@ecoevo.social Me too! There are some fabulous old hand painted signs around Athens, but this is a favourite. I’ve been trying to get a good picture of it for months, but there’s always either a motorbike parked outside, or I’m too close and my reflection dominates. Here it was Sunday, I stood far away and cropped it.

@clew@ecoevo.social Sort of? The tree and its fruit are both ελιά. The oil is so ubiquitous we often just call it oil (λάδι), but it’s proper name is ελαιόλαδο, and you don’t have to speak Greek to know that’s a compound of plant name+oil. But it’s more complicated than that, because the Ancient Greek word for oil is ἔλαιον, which means”olive oil”. I think it’s the origin of the English word ‘oil’ too. The synonymy is buried, but deep.
