I continue to hope that what’s happening now will change the mindset of consumers from upgrading and buying new gear every cycle to keeping devices longer — and also repairing older devices to keep them running longer.
We are at a point where technology is fast enough, big enough and good enough. Performance gains are marginal at best. Was last years iPhone really that much better than this years? Nope. Do regular consumers really need to upgrade their MacBook Airs to get a M5 chip? Nope.

Finally, what looks to be a good adaptation of Green Laterns. I am a fan of Green Lantern, but all I have to watch on the screen is Ryan Reynolds' version (meh) and Nathan Fillion's version (less meh).
Now we get Kyle Chandler as what looks to be a weary and tired (and sarcastic) Hal Jordan -- already a win. And we get Aaron Pierre as a Green Lantern in training, John Stewart. If you haven't see Rebel Ridge (2023), it's well worth a watch, Pierre is absolutely fantastic in the movie.
Fillion is reprising his role as Guy Gardner in the TV series, so I guess we'll all get to chuckle at his weird haircut again.

The broader report claims that companies that were previously quick to embrace AI spending are now starting to see enormous costs without necessarily getting any material return. Recently, Uber's chief exec claimed there was no link between AI 'tokenmaxxing' and shipping useful products. It's a phenomenon perhaps most keenly reported at Amazon, where employees are said to have been caught inflating AI token consumption to meet internal targets. In fact, a Financial Times report on Thursday indicates Amazon has scrapped its internal AI usage leaderboard to stop employees carrying out needless tasks in order to climb the league table.
The more recent report says corporate AI adoption has found several issues with AI, with human workers turning to automating dreary and mundane tasks they don't like doing, rather than valuable or meaningful work. Others have reportedly found employees even using AI models to check the weather. It doesn't help that agentic AI tools eat up 1000x more tokens than querying an LLM.

After three months and 1.6k posts later on snac, I'm super happy. Main things that I like about running snac for my Fediverse presence:
- Light on resources. I can run this on a potato if I wanted and it would run great (I'm not, but I could.)
- Backups are easy. Tar up the directory. Done.
- Migrations are easy. Install nginx, build snac, untar backup. Done.
- Quirky web interface. It takes a little to get used to it, but it is very functional and it's got character. I thought I would use Phanpy with it more, but I'm not. I enjoy the snac web interface.
- Works (mostly) with Mastodon clients.
- No crazy caching of photos, avatars and other media. This is a really big deal because my disk usage is so much lower than when I ran Mastodon.
- No database. NO DATABASE. So good.
- Fast. snac is really fast doing everything. It's nice.
- @grunfink@comam.es is awesome. Friendly and responsive.

It's such a classic story -- and honestly, it's a short read so worth a read .
The first time I read it was as a reinterpretation. A friend of author Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park) thought Beowulf was boring and challenged Crichton to make it exciting. Crichton wrote the book Eaters of the Dead based on the challenge and the book follows the story of Beowulf, but from the point of view of a third party. The book was later made into the movie 13th Warrior starring Antonio Banderas as that third party.
In university, I took an English course where I read Beowulf in the original language, Old English (aka Anglo-Saxon) in its original format: Verse (aka a poem). It's great!
Because Beowulf is written in Old English, it has many translations. The translation into verse by Burton Raffel is particularly good. But the best verse translation into Modern English is by Seamus Heaney the book contains the Old English version right next to the new English translation.
I've read multiple prose translations. The best prose translation of Beowulf is Donaldson's and worth a read if it's your first time reading. Beowulf was also translated into prose by J.R.R. Tolkien.
If you can't tell, I love this story and think everyone should read it at lease once.

Tonight's movie was Night of the Comet (1984). This was a random movie that auto-played on YouTube. It was campy enough that I watched it all the way through.
Night of the Comet was fun in an 80s kind of way with some great music. I really like how they were able to achieve a few scenes of what would be a bustling cityscape shown completely empty and barren -- like how 28 Days Later looked.
A minor complaint is that there weren't enough zombies.
Big 80s hair ftw.
Chakotay vs. Zombies.
