Inspired by @fergycool@mastodon.social and thanks to some iSight for MacOS 9 driver spelunking by @vga256@mastodon.tomodori.net I am currently broadcasting a live feed of the Sakurajima volcano erupting on #GlobalTalk via QuickTime Conferencing.

If I’m going to do this again I’m gonna need a longer FireWire cable… the driver is also in trial mode and quits after 30 minutes.

This is pretty cool. Apple's old Time Capsule devices run NetBSD, so in anticipation of their deprecation of AFP in the next version of macOS this guy got samba 4 running on it

Was just chatting with my sister and had this realization about the current obviously incestuous AI investment cycle:

It's like the rich people all saw the dotcom bust, the 2008 financial crisis, and the COVID bust and went "well all the rich people made out gangbusters in increasing amounts, if only we can top that!"

I've uploaded a video of the full TalkCrawler AD screensaver showing all the zones I saw on #GlobalTalk during #MARCHintosh this year, in case anyone was not able to check it out themselves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik-sJPcIqY0

Why does printing suck still… spent like 2 hours fighting CUPS trying to understand how page sizes/margins work If I have the margins in the PPD, it always adds on a left margin and pushes the right hand off the page. If I set the page size to the printable area, the left side is right, but the right side cuts off before the printable area ends??? If it set the page size to printable area+1cm, I can print the whole width, but now I have a no-go zone on the right Still dunno what's going on.

@mroach @caseyliss My secret guilty pleasure is to once in a while go to the YouTube comments and switch from "Top" to “New" to see the absolute worst takes in the history of mankind. One guy on the RCR video replied (paraphrased) “I’ve been watching for years but I'm unfollowing because your “Car Review" channel is taken over by emotionally driven opinions” Brother, the whole THESIS of this channel is that cars are all about philosophy, emotions and society. That's what makes it so great!

@paulrickards The only thing that tripped me up was that installing foomatic-filters now uninstalls cups and breaks everything. But with iwhi that's introduced further down on the post, foomatic-filters isn't needed so I just stuck with that.

@shiawase@mastodon.social I bought one case of tractor feed paper last year, have been printing like there's no tomorrow, and it's like maybe 10% down haha Still on the first ribbon too! It's noticeably thin now, it I want to do a fancy printout I put in the fresher ribbon, but I can keep this one for prints where fidelity is less import...

@Migueldeicaza I switched to Safari with the first Retina MacBook Pro (2012?) since Chrome was so laggy with the high res screen. Tried to go back a year later and it was still noticeably laggy. Never bothered since. I do have to use chrome occasionally to test/fix compatibility for stuff I make for work.

Boosts are appreciated 🙇‍♂️ Hello all! I lost my steady gig a year ago, projects from my network are running out, and I need a job. I’ve worked as an iOS dev for 15 years on cool apps like Camera+, but also building and running web and backend systems. Objective-C/Swift, but also TypeScript/next.js, PHP/WordPress, whatever fits the job! I can work remote globally or locally in Japan (have PR) Resume, Portfolio, LinkedIn etc are all at https://kalleboo.com/me #FediHire #GetFediHired

One thing I've learned is that Inside Macintosh is just the primer. It may look like all you need - it lists all the Toolbox functions and how they work, and walks you through how things ought to fit together!

But in reality to make anything beyond TeachText you need to read: every Technote, every Q&A, skim every relevant sample code, every Snippet, and also read every issue of develop.

Then you can start to approach being able to attempt to do something!

macOS 27 adds a command line tool fm (Foundation Models) that lets you run queries against the local on-device AI model.

I know that it's a tiny model only meant to do language tasks like grammar checking and it doesn't have any real world-knowledge backing, but it's still funny to see what it thinks of #Apple corporate history.
