Apart from the well-aged "Asbestos and rubber factory Hamburg", this is the first time I've seen both a proper umlaut ("ä" in "erhältlich") and the workaround writing style ("Ue" in "Ueberall/Überall"). Was that something done intentional? Did they only have the lower-case umlaut for those new fancy sans serif typefaces? #typography

So, Germany needs a boost for its industry, and the USA is going all weirdly 19th century, health-wise.

Deutsche Rollenspielübersetzungen brauchen dümmere Titel. Mindestens Untertitel.

Pathfinder 2 - Jetzt erst recht

Piratenburg - Sechs abgewrackte Profis

@HeyeBodo@rollenspiel.social @juergen_hubert@mementomori.social And then of course there was Thousand Thousand Islands and that one Swiss-based game had some "devil at the roadside" narratives, although I honestly wouldn't say that it's easier to shoe-horn folk narratives into OSR, given the issues way too many people have about just doing something for the morals, not gold pieces. Whereas gallivanting about in fairy realms seems quite popular in 5E circles. Heck, even mega-crunchy pathfinder milked the Baba Yaga for all she's worth. I think everyone likes the elements, the packaging is the difficult topic here. Would those tales be adventures? Adventure seeds? Just re-telling Grimm's tales in a D&D-ish setting? I wouldn't mind something like the AD&D 2E Book of Lairs, just with less fight-centrism. And to be honest, now that I got thinking about a string of combat encounters where you fight Venetians, walriders, then some old king slumbering under a hill, and ending up with either Frau Holle or Ol' Scratch…

@HeyeBodo@rollenspiel.social Found The Dark Eye at a church library, had a bigger issue finding a group. Was very annoying to the local comic shop owners asking about their "Adventures in Magira" game. So after sporadically playing in the lands of Aventuria, there was a big splash of terminally 90s games (Shadowrun, World of Dorkness, GURPS), and a big boost when d20 madness came along. Managed to foist GURPS and HERO upon those people sometimes. Tried story games at that time quite often, but they often are like "FMV cutscenes" to me. After moving, finding The Dark Eye groups was the only good option, so the circle closes in a weird way. Dipping into OSR territory, but holy frick, definitely not "part" of it. I still like overly complicated settings. I still haven't properly played "Adventures in Magira".

This One Album a Day thing isn't doing well for me. We started with Lynyrd Skynyrd and now went down further south, quality-wise, with Oasis' debut record. To be fair, this hasn't reached that level of cultural osmosis for me, so I actually do think I'm listening to this the first time. But novelty won't save me from the vocal disaster that is [I forgot which one] Gallagher.

@mdhughes@appdot.net I was a user for a while, but only because I needed some hosting, not for any collaborative reasons. It was okay. Interface is simple, there's quite a lot of adjacent features if you need them (mailing lists, web hosting). I'm stopped using it in a bout of reducing subscriptions, but never had any complaints. I see it quite often here, about the same level as codeberg, slightly more often than tildegit.

@HeyeBodo@rollenspiel.social @mdhughes@appdot.net The first one was a bit idiosyncratic with its magic system, if I remember correctly, but even that works well enough. It's BRP, and one of the more forgiving variants, so it's a decent enough workhorse. I just remember that the German version back then looked so beautiful. Never actually owned that version, though. The publisher "Laurin" had some pretty awesome layout back then, their hardcover leatherette Rolemaster books still fetch a decent price.

@moonmoth Anderes System bzw.

@tewha@appdot.net @mdhughes@appdot.net Which is a bit weird, given that this means that you only Delete things that aren't properly there ;) Autosave also has some other choices one has to make, e.g. I'm rather fond of code editors saving the state, without actually saving the files, so when re-opening the changes are still there, but still not saved. But for regular users and their text documents, I'm not sure that works. Then again, I'm not sure how a contemporary Word user relates to their files in the first place. But leaving that aside, I certainly agree that the basic dialog layout was basically "solved" decades ago… If I remember correctly, one thing Aqua added to the old Mac dialogs was that the default icon was the app icon, so that when you had a lot of windows open you knew which one the dialog belongs to, without the need for raising or even sticking the dialog to the titlebar.

@drj@typo.social Phew, I think when it comes to technical capabilities, the early Mac format(s) probably win (NFNT/FOND). Although that wasn't quite my timeline, so I'm not sure how well the advanced kerning capabilities were actually used. I still have a soft spot for the Unix ASCII formats, like .xpm for images, and that includes the BDF format for fonts. Adjusting a letter for your personal needs with a text editor is just neat.

@rl_dane@polymaths.social @SamuraiSakura@mastodon.bsd.cafe Really? I think I might even have a three button USB one in my Mouse Bucket™, the were a possibility long after e.g. you weren't able to get non-Windows-keyboards anymore (and I'm talking about just three buttons in the front, there are still some mice with three buttons and a scroll while, especially those vertical "war veteran" ones). Probably the reason why I'm still opening links with a scroll wheel click and close tabs that way. I still miss my PS/2 Logitech Trackman (three buttons, trackball at thumb position), but the death of scroll bars have made non-wheel devices harder to use, never mind that by now I might get a bit of thumb RSI from using it longer. (They made one with a mouse wheel, too, but that's not my nirvana model)

I checked the experience table. It's rather linear. Of course this being German, just getting treasure or killing monsters isn't enough, you need to be a good player. Really get into your "Catamite" or "Unicorn Rider" character class. If you do that, you're supposed to get 90-100 XP per session. Say you're not as good at catamiting as that, and so you need 3 full sessions for the 250 XP you need per level. This means increasing your level ages you 3d4 years. Now, the human starting age is rolled on a d10, ranging from 16 to 50(!) years. You have to save vs death each time (I assume after each adventure), with a base chance of 15% once you're 60, plus 5% for each two years after that.

@bwebster @mdhughes I think the only game where this is actually RAW (besides this MM&M), is Pendragon, but there it's actually diegetic, and as a lordly knight, heirs do make sense. As a mandatory borderline between adventures, it makes little to no sense, never mind the wide definition of "adventure". The first sample adventure is a, well, let's call it a mystery, and takes 5 days to resolve. 1d4 years later, our young heroes are apparently still together, but go on another short adventuring vacation… Meh. I'm okay with a "LFQ" action that takes random roll of dice months to perform, at which point you add some time to get the characters together, unless they invest in a HQ, and then add some travel time (without necessarily going hexcrawly), and you got a duration cooking. There's something twixt level 10 Cohen the Barbarian and Pathfindery "adventure path speedruns"…
