programming as a medium of communication between programmers. between collaborators, between dependencies and their dependents, between an author and their audience, between an educator and their students, etc even when we say that a program controls the machine, what we are saying is that the programmer is accessing routines left by other programmers working on a different level. communicating asynchronously with past programmers. all programming is communication.

douglas adams's story about the civilization that built a giant computer that gave the ultimate answer but nobody knew what the question was so they put all their resources into building an even bigger computer just to figure out the question ... it feels more plausible every day.

Very nice talk by Alexis King about using types to model values positively, rather than as restrictions. Also about the idea of types as a way to communicate obligations between far away pieces of code, between producers and consumers of the type. So when you change a type, the type checker helps you propagate those obligations throughout your codebase. It's refreshing to hear people talk about types the way I also think about them, and Alexis is a great presenter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BXuYlNrUmE

some people are intrinsically motivated to do an action, meaning they are interested in doing the action for its own sake. others are extrinsically motivated, meaning they are doing it for some kind of outside reward. a lot of games and websites try to use outside rewards to get people to form habits that support the game or website long term. and there are people like me who know these tricks and are turned off by them. we can say these people are extrinsically demotivated.

software is like mayonnaise:

  • weird emulsion that is greater than the sum of its parts.
  • breaks if you hold it wrong.
  • homemade tastes better but it doesn't last as long.
  • store bought has a bunch of extra stuff that has no business being in the sauce.
  • there are ethical concerns.
  • the ick.

a lot of confusion people have about types come from the mess that is mutable state in most languages. people conflate subtypes with subsets, which only really works when values are immutable. otherwise e.g. if a nonempty list is a list, and pop is a method on lists, you would be able to pop the last item from a nonempty list and it would still have be a nonempty list! ofc in this case the liskov substitution principle says nonempty lists aren't lists actually. mutability is not intuitive.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange if you talk to people who visit or immigrate to the US about unexpected parts of the experience, many do bring up those points ... (another one for me is how in US restaurants they are always trying to get you out of there as quickly as possible.) but i think most people don't realize that reverse culture shock is a thing until they experience it, like you have.

RE: @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange

There's a point here that should be reiterated for anyone doing programming language design, or any text-based user interface: Certain characters that are very easy to type on US keyboards, like [ ] { } \ ` and so on, tend to be much harder to type on any other keyboard.

When I first got into programming, the Portuguese keyboard i used meant the learning curve was even steeper in the beginning.

Remember the anagram "ASCII" doesn't start with "Universal" it starts with "American".

when game programmers say they sort objects back to front, or front to back, before drawing them, e.g. to get correct alpha blending, or to not rely on a z-buffer for some reason ... i wonder if they know that you can't actually do that, in general. even with convex objects. even with just three triangles. there is no way to sort them. because you can have A overlap B overlap C overlap A. see this helpful illustration from the khronos opengl wiki: https://wikis.khronos.org/opengl/Transparency_Sorting

when we say "these two values are morally equivalent" we mean that they might not be literally equivalent but you should pretend they are, and if you don't you are committing a sin. e.g. distinguishing two hash maps based on the order of elements within them. but ... you can confess this sin by declaring it in the type, and passing on the moral buck. just say "pretend these things, which i have immorally distinguished, are actually the same". this is how morality, er, quotient types work.

@papalex@mathstodon.xyz @johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz I think the problem is confusing. There are three levels here: Peano Arithmetic (the theory), models of PA which live in ZFC set theory (the metatheory), and models of ZFC set theory which live in some ambient set/class theory (the meta-meta-theory). The "standard model of PA" is both a meta-theoretic idea that is internal to ZFC set theory (usually the initial model), and a meta-meta-theoretic idea that relates different models of set theory (N in V and its images).

@papalex@mathstodon.xyz @johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz In both interpretations, 'N in *V is the standard model of PA. This 'N may look different externally but it looks like N in the ZFC set theory (the meta-theory). Where things get interesting is when we have a separate notion of "standard" set in the meta-theory (i.e. if the meta-theory is IST instead of ZFC), and then a meta-theoretic notion of "standard model" means "the initial model that is standard" as opposed to just "the initial model".

@papalex@mathstodon.xyz @johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz Because you can't take arbitrary external subsets of sets in *V. Every infinite set in *V is going to have nonstandard elements. (You can create internal subsets following the rules of ZFC. E.g. consider a nonstandard natural n. The natural numbers less than n form a set by replacement (clamping N by n-1). But this isn't a (sub)model of PA, and it contains nonstandard numbers (e.g. n-1).) That's why we construct W to let us build more interesting subsets.

@johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz @papalex@mathstodon.xyz So, admittedly, I left a lot of details out of constructing W and I'm not sure if it even works as a model of ZFC. But it's what I intuitively think of as a model of internal set theory -- you have your standard sets as ultrapowers, and your "external/arbitrary" nonstandard sets as arbitrary subsets of standard sets. I'd be very curious to look at actually rigorous constructions of models of IST, which should provide the desired example. 9/9, fin.

@johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz @papalex@mathstodon.xyz But then we can also look at just (the class of) the set of standard natural numbers in W, [{ (0,0,0,...), (1,1,1,...), (2,2,2,...), ... }]. This is nonstandard because it doesn't come from the standard mapping of a set in V. But it serves as a model of PA in W, and is initial, I think. (You can argue that there is a more direct mapping from V to W, by every set element x to (x,x,x,...), but it doesn't go through *V so we don't get any nonstandard elements in N.) 8/

So that standard N maps to the [ N × N × N × ... ] and therefore contains both standard natural numbers (0,0,0,...), (1,1,1,...), (2,2,2,...), ... and nonstandard natural numbers (0,1,2,...), (1,2,3,...), (0,0,1,1,2,2,...). 7/

@johncarlosbaez@mathstodon.xyz @papalex@mathstodon.xyz Here's the part I'm unsure about. I think we could build such a model by transposing the ultrapower construction, so instead of looking at ultrapowers of sets in V, we look at sets of sequences in V, quotiented by U, and build a model out of that. Let's call this model W, and the idea that sets in W are sets of sequences in V, up to equivalence on U-large sets of indices. And ∈ in W is given by ∈ in V, up to equivalence of sequences by U-large sets of indices. 6/
