I get mad about the collapse a lot but mostly I’m into cats and games and books and cool people.

By day, I write software. By preference, I'd write clojure or I'd be learning rust and elixir. By necessity, I'm writing golang and typescript.

I think the way we model and transfer data in the industry commonly is woefully inadequate and am on a jeremiad to demonstrate alternatives.

@Strandjunker@mstdn.social @petrillic@hachyderm.io Well I mean he is a city executive with a friendly council so there’s a ton he can do in the city by fiat and very little he can do beyond without hitting those bureaucracies. But credit to him – he’s using his executive powers very actively and creatively in ways that should embarrass most big city mayors.

@Brad_Rosenheim@climatejustice.social @inthehands@hachyderm.io I also have this insurer and have been pushed to use this feature, thankfully not due to a denial. I vaguely assumed it was offered so that patients with complex cases could get another set of eyes on the situation to make sure they’re not being taken advantage of. Fair enough, if so, but the nurses I talked to, while nice, were hopelessly out of their depth. I assume now they’re just gathering intel in order to help support a denial.

@inthehands @RnDanger This is also another place where abandoning enforcing antitrust laws hurts us. When the dominant cartel collectively degrade their services, the market provides no signal of or reward for customer preferences.

@NuclearOatmeal@beige.party @hal_pomeranz@infosec.exchange I’ve taken to writing interpreters and compilers. If you know the basic patterns, for simple languages, they’re not too difficult to get working, and they force you to make choices about data types, memory management, errors, i/o, etc.

The US-Israeli War on Iran is illegal and immoral. As a citizen of the US, I believe we must cease fire immediately, pay reparations, impeach our leaders, and turn them over to the ICC.

@rossgrady@dood.net The things I like most about the Fedi is that most users are Principled — you have to be to put up with the jankiness, and that, maybe because of that jankiness, maybe for some cultural reason, are disinclined to picking fights. We lost a lot when we lost old Twitter. I'll miss it the most on, you know, the day we're all waiting for comes to pass. But I've become moderately convinced that such sites aren't culturally or commercial sustainable as such under capitalism.

@alice @IveyJanette For a really enraging time – if you can, compare what the insurance company *actually* paid out. I dug in after my month of hospital last year. Insurance reported to me paying claims worth $350k, but they only actually paid about $150k. The missing $200k is their stated negotiated discount due to their contract with the hospital. Smells like both advertising and accounting fraud, honestly.

Super 21st century American problem, really, but: it’s kind of wild that we’ve built a conmercial information system in which answering a simple question like “is store X open today” requires guessing which of: the store’s web site, automated phone tree, Google profile, Apple profile, Facebook profile, Instagram news feed are the most reliably updated by the people actually doing the work.

At least they're spending time fucking with a guy who has resources and powerful allies.

@balcanquhal @mttaggart Same here. They blamed a screen defect on customer-induced damage and refused to budge, and as it turns out, it’s not at all an uncommon complaint. They were already on my “fuck ‘em” list even before they threw in with the fascists.

Having choked down the full Behind the Bastards treatment of Jimmy Saville, a thought has struck me. Is it possible the UK became TERF island as something of a cynical ploy by the elite to redirect the public’s righteous fury at the growing realization that their elite, especially the Tories and the BBC, knowingly enabled an horrific predator for *decades*?

@zeblarson@hcommons.social Yeah, exactly. We're a generation into that politically motivated corruption and the rot has spread. I have a rich set of conflicting feelings about the American university system, but on aggregate I think it's clearly been beneficial, and between the disinvestment by the governments, the corrupt administrations, and the new frontal assaults on federal grants, right on the heels of the COVID disruption, I worry about what we may be losing.

@zeblarson@hcommons.social I strongly feel there’s a broader story of corruption here, whereby in response to the cuts and control from hostile legislatures, public universities have found a lot of ways to compensate the scions and allies of the empowered elite.

@Ox1de@cyberplace.social @jalefkowit@vmst.io A lifetime of watching Democrats miss layups has left me with at least the comfort of certainty, where the only real surprise is the manner in which they’ll screw it up.

Biden pivoting from abortion directly into immigration was, to be sure, one for the ages.

Kinda weird hearing complaints about "sportsball" from literally some of the same folk who were insisting that an insulting term for llms was at least bigotry-adjacent a week or two back.

Absolutely fight the gender police, the IOC is corrupt and friendly to authoritarians, always has been (check out the People's Olympiad), but I don't think it's helpful or necessary to deride a pastime enjoyed by at least the plurality of humans in so doing.
