There is a correct solution to the trolley problem. It is this: you design the system with positive train control. You make it so the trolley cannot enter a section where there are people, and you make it so the trolley can be stopped quickly if something goes wrong. I've been told that this is cheating, a cop-out, or avoiding the "interesting" aspects of the question. I don't think it is. Framing the world as a series of individual can't-win situations and lose-lose decisions _is_ the problem. Don't do that.

Job news! Starting this week I’m switching back to an individual contributor role to work on Lightwell. (https://www.redhat.com/en/lightwell) Still working to figure out the shape of the new job, but the essence is: we intend to make this good for upstreams. Not as a “way to give back” or mere marketing claims, but because that’s the only way this works long-term. I’m going to help make that intention into fact.

Also good to instill:

  • "I'll call you back in a minute" — even if the call comes from a known number. Spoofing is easy; resisting this is a red flag ("they're not taking incoming calls right now" — then it isn't urgent!)

  • It is extremely unlikely that a few hours delay in any situation will make a difference. You have time to check with someone else for a second opinion. Insist on it. (And again, resistance is a red flag. Set the expectation in your family ahead of time, and again if the caller resists, red flag!)

@futurebird It's complex — the very definition of bittersweet. Right now, my youngest kid is finishing her first year of college and will be back here soon for what's probably her last few months as, really, part of our household. So, I'm full of these feelings. What's more, I can see them in her, and that's its own complexity. When's she's come home for breaks and long weekends, I can see she feels a little of the sadness of it. That cliché — _you can't go home again_ — has a lot of truth.

@vixalientoots @jacqueline Uh. They (famously or not, but reported in the news) had a huge contract, which fell apart because the extremely low bar they set for "nope" set off the administration, and so OpenAI swooped in with, apparently, "ooh, ooh, we have no semblance of even the lowest of moral standards! pick us!" OpenAI announces Pentagon deal after Trump bans Anthropic

Shortly after the president's ban of artificial intelligence company Anthropic, rival OpenAI announced it had done a deal with the Defense Department to provide its technology for classified networks.

@aj Ok... without looking... Melbourne. Miss Fisher Mysteries, and also Fisk, and also I think maybe that show where Xena is a private detective (before moving home to NZ). Sydney. It has an opera house. Perth. It is, somehow, on the most opposite side of the world from _most_ cities. Adelaide. Penguins? Uh, Brisbane. I don't know anything about that one. Canberra? Is that a thing? Unsure on number of Rs. Also, I think maybe there is a Darwin, but I'm sorry if that's in New Zealand.

I got them from the supply closet at Boston University IT in 1998, and I actually used them for their intended purpose for quite some time. (They still have a bunch of random office items from when I left BU in 2008. Oh look! My business cards!)

@cwebber I think there's a material difference — with a big caveat. AI slop "content" is (nominally at least) meant for direct human engagement: reading, watching, listening. Code is means to an end — the end user sees the app or web ui or whatever, not the code directly. But the caveat is: well, except, for developers working with a team. And _especially_ in open source. There, code _is_ communication, human-to-human communication. (Which, of course, is why LLMs can generate code _at all_.)

@CiaraNi The version I saw said it was from Facebook, with some specific names. Which I didn't bother to look up, but on doing it now, looks like bullshit. So, at some point along the way it picked up a caption intentionally designed to deceive. And you're right — looks like AI, probably AI, but makes it really hard to believe anything. Worse, makes it easy to deny anything you don't want to see.
