I live in #DurhamNC & I spend a lot of time thinking about #synthdiy / #eurorack -- my dayjob is in tech because I'm a walking stereotype.

I'm leftist, anti-fascist, pro-LGBTQIA+++, pro-BIPOC, anti-TERF/SWERF, bored with "free speech" arguments, and I believe all cops are bastards.

Currently living on a single-user instance running #Akkoma.

I knew who it was without doublechecking. A few years ago I was driving home from work on 147, and the smell of industrial solvents was so strong as I drove past Brenntag, I called 911. Fuckin scumbags. https://www.reddit.com/r/bullcity/comments/1u8hci9/were_suing_to_stop_water_contamination_in_durham/

YES I have been watching all of the video from the #Rush tour with Anika Nilles on drums and YES I just bought a ticket for one of the Charlotte shows. Last time I saw Rush in Charlotte was probably . . . 1984?

Ashley Padilla was on Poehler this week, and recommended the 3rd-generation survival reality show Extracted. Which is like Alone, except the people trying to survive have zero skills, and their access to supplies depends entirely on their idiot family members outwitting each other in basic game theory challenges. We watched three episodes tonight and y’all my brain is SO EMPTY right now. Just absolute blissful thoughtless stillness.

@c_reider@sonomu.club I don't pretend to understand the whole Songtradr ecosystem, but the thing they say they're sunsetting is Songtradr Marketplace, and they seem to be telling everyone to migrate to Bandcamp for direct sales (and to MassiveMusic, which they also own, for licensing). Was Songtradr Marketplace also direct sales, or was it more like a distro? No idea. But the direction to join Bandcamp is repeated in multiple places in the FAQ, so . . .

Are there any #Carolina #Hurricanes fans who can explain why all the upcoming games are listed as “No Reserved Parking” on ParkWhiz? I don’t remember this being the case last fall around this time, but I don’t go to that many games.

This drink, from _beta cocktails_ by Kirk Estopinal and Maksym Pazuniak, is every bit as delicious and easy drinking as you’d expect it to be. Even if you don’t have raspberries (which I do not). Easy Does It 1 oz Plymouth Gin 1/2 oz Aperol 1/4 oz Campari 1 oz grapefruit juice 1/2 oz simple syrup (1:1) 3 raspberries Shakes and strain over a rock. Garnish with 3 raspberries on a skewer. Few movie scenes make me more uncomfortable (consistently, every time) than this one, from the documentary X: The Unheard Music Here's one of my favorite songs OF ALL TIME and then, there it is, the ghoulish spectre, talent vampire Ray Manzarek, fist-pumping in the control room. (Manzarek produced the first four X albums, some of my favorite records ever, so you'd think I'd feel more kindly towards him . . . but . . . The Doors. 'nuff said.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emY12SGdrIM

Zero seconds after seeing these photos (of an album I think I haven’t heard in 30+ years), I said, loudly, “I love my baby cause she does good sculpture, yeah” This is what a good 90% of my brain cells are tied up with. RE: https://sfba.social/@historyofpunkrock/116955685384189569

@donaldball@triangletoot.party I was scrolling back through everyone I follow on here yesterday, trying to remember someone's handle because lord knows searching for things is just impossible, and it was like the graveyard of people who tried out Fedi for a minute when Twitter imploded, and then decamped for Threads or Bsky or whatever. In some cases it was the jank, and in some cases it was just never acheiving the critical mass of everyone in the same place at the same time that we had on Twitter, and in some cases [they claim] it was because someone on Fedi told them to use CWs. I'm keeping one eye on Bsky because some American news breaks faster & is discussed differently over there than here. And in some cases that's useful. But in other cases, it's tedious AF. So yeah, I like it here. People tend to be more thoughtful. Maybe because the character limit is longer? :)

This is a cool project, but even cooler is how much detail the guy goes into in his writeup, about all his ideas and how he used trial-and-error a lot to get to a working final product. It is SO important to have this kind of visible documentation of how many of us figure this kind of stuff out. It hopefully sends the message that all you really need is some persistence and patience and a willingness to try stuff. RE: https://toot.community/@mick_collins/116796331637400251

Been looking at Bluesky via Tapestry (it’s great, you can’t actually post, which is useful in this scenario). I intentionally don’t follow many people over there, but even with that, the snotty dunk-centric discourse shows through. Like, apparently the Europeans are all arguing with the Americans about whether air conditioning is evil. The flavor over there is a little more along the lines of what everyone here was afraid would happen when Mastodon added QTs. (Which hasn’t really come to pass here.) I don’t have to go into detail about the ways in which some Fedi people are tiresome, because I am posting this on Fedi. Y’all know. My conclusion from this very limited experiment is that both Fedi and Bsky have tedious asshats, and it’s largely down to picking which kind you will tolerate having RT’ed into your timeline by people whom you had hoped would be more discerning.

I would believe that #KiCAD has a perfectly rational way of doing things, and I just need to learn what that is, were it not for the objectively asinine way it handles board outlines, a thing that literally every PCB requires.

At no point in the past 30 years of my career in the technology industry has any boss ever said "gee Ross, the latest technological advances have made you 5x more productive, would you like to cut back to working 8 hours a week for the same pay?" and I have very much noticed the absence of that discussion.

On the one hand: Literally every day something occurs to remind me how grateful I am that I didn't wind up with a career in Academia. OTOH: I've lost track of whose money is being spent by OpenAI on compute, but one thing I know is that it's not *their* money. RE: https://tldr.nettime.org/@remixtures/117237491740898173

"While Buckmaster and Alpöge were finalizing their own results, they learned that “information about our progress had been passed to OpenAI.” When they contacted OpenAI, they were told that OpenAI had already achieved a full proof of the central problem. But when they asked follow-up questions about when OpenAI had begun its research into the problem and how much human input was involved, the answers became more evasive. “It emerged that an entire team had been working on the problem,” Buckmaster said, “and that an insane amount of compute had been used…. Eventually, it was agreed that [the first prompt] had been sent in the past few days, after information about our work had reached OpenAI.” If true, that would suggest the OpenAI team had become convinced that Buckmaster and Alpöge’s approach was the right one, and decided to use its material advantage in computing resources to reach a formal proof first." https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/08/openai-fought-dirty-on-career-making-math-problem-says-nyu-mathematician/ #AI #GenerativeAI #LLMs #OpenAI #Astra #GPT #Math #Mathematics

My spouse is *very* happy that Alex Ovechkin will be back for one more year. I have mixed feelings — the whole chase for the Gretzky record was a huge distraction, and now this year is gonna make Fleury’s farewell tour look like an office birthday party. OTOH, I think the trades and UFA signings are gonna make the 26-27 Caps an interesting (and fun) team to watch. So: we’ll see. I still wouldn’t bet on them to make it past the 2nd round of the playoffs, tho. #NHL #Hockey
