@MaddieM4@raphus.social @huntingdon@mstdn.social @nswigger@mstdn.party I think it's critical to follow the money. Almost all the pro-oligarchy economists are, surprise, paid by oligarchs (directly or indirectly). So the ideas they produce become entirely unsurprising.

@VANTABlack2000@mastodon.gamedev.place @anolandria@mastodon.social Yes, precisely; a 500-char toot doesn't have room for a lot of nuance. Any given person might favor domination or cooperation more or less in specific contexts; a person might demand cooperation in politics while preferring domination in their family or business life. A friend group might operate cooperatively except one guy has a tendency to passive-aggresively push to control things a little. Etc.

@navi@catcatnya.com @jasmine@chaosfem.tw this is true, but until it is possible to exist in the capitalist system without engaging with some for-profit companies, the next best option is to engage with the least evil companies possible

@scalzi@mastodon.social I got lucky when I bought my Pixel 5 in Dec 2020. It still worked great after 5 years, was as snappy as ever, although it did have occasional bouts of senility. Longest I ever went without replacing my phone. Got a Pixel 9 this past December, but installed GrapheneOS as soon as I opened it. First step toward getting Google's bullshit out of my life.

@danluu@mastodon.social at this point in history, how can anyone look at the literally *hundreds* of blatantly unethical things Microsoft has done over the course of its existence and say "yeah this is a company I trust"?

@richpuchalsky@mastodon.social @ramsey@phpc.social lol i was just saying that same thing to someone yesterday. i thankfully haven't been forced to "use" LLMs like that yet but if i am, day 1 is writing a script to fake it luckily the bubble is starting to collapse and prices are skyrocketing and it may not be long before LLM usage is banned rather than encouraged! *crosses fingers*

@radieschen @claudius @davep @ahltorp @jtb agreed. as an example, we have here in the US the Secret Service whose job is (among other things) to protect the president from physical threats. it is not the president's job to do threat analysis or secure locations. similarly there should be a technical branch that provides secure tools that are highly resistant to being misused, rather than govt officials just using off the shelf software on their own initiative.

@randulo@mastodon.social "it has some very good use cases" yes but none of them involve LLMs. "AI" is more than LLMs, do not conflate them

Replying to
@nikitonsky@mastodon.online some dubious unstated assumptions here. "if everything is highlighted, nothing is highlighted" presumes that syntax highlighting is akin to text highlighting; that is, the purpose is to draw attention to some parts (but not others). that's not what syntax highlighting is for; it's for color-coding different elements to make them distinct from *one another*. there is no "base text" in code. bad color choices are a legit issue, but "only color code some things" is the wrong solution

@tknarr@mstdn.social @briankrebs@infosec.exchange It doesn't really matter if it is a roast; people who are ostensibly journalists absolutely cannot, ever, socialize with the people they are supposed to hold to account.
