I can't find it, but there was a viral tweet a few years back about how the author thought Musk was a genius until he started talking about a subject they actually knew, and then they realized he was a moron. GenAI is the same.

California license plates have started with one number, followed by three letters and three numbers, since 1980. Even with over 100 million plate combinations possible, the state still managed to run out of numbers in that particular sequence after 46 years

the final plate, 9ZZZ999 was printed earlier this year. [...] the department still has about 110,000 plates with the prior sequence left to issue.

The new license plate format has already been pressed and distributed to DMVs across the state.

At the start of my career I was being paid for the code I wrote. By the end of my career I was being paid for the code I didn't have to write. One of the nicest complements I ever got from a coworker was that he was astonished how much I accomplished with so little code. Everything I built was designed to be easily and quickly extensible with minimal changes, I planned my structure for future needs. Code isn't the hard part, not writing code is, and LLMs are really bad at not writing code.

There was a tiktok I saw a week or two ago that talked about the way neurodivergent kids grow up in a perpetual state of stress their entire lives, and are basically just running on cortisol 24/7. It made me think about how cortisol causes visceral fat deposits to form in the abdomen, producing a distinct belly shape... and then I thought about how few trans women I know of who do not have that belly shape.

I wonder how many people consciously recognized that The Lion King is a story about facism. I mean, to me, the hyena storm troopers were pretty heavy handed, but there are people who idolize The Empire from Star Wars, so...

RE: @256@mastodon.social

It wasn't until I was well into my late 20s and had been using OSX for a few years that I realized RAM Doubler was just a page file for classic Mac OS

While classic MacOS did eventually gain built in virtual memory management (I think in 8.5?), this was a life saver in the 7.x days.

Programming languages exist as an abstraction layer to allow humans to reason about writing instructions for a CPU. Each languge is built to organize around a different pattern of thought. So if people aren't bothering to read the code that LLMs generate, if they're completely willing to accept probabalistic app generation, why are they bothering with code at all? Cut out the middle layer, skip the compiler, just start making binaries directly.

Web searches are failing me and wikipedia isn't granular enough on this topic, so I'm hoping fedi remembers. When did AOL add generic tcp/ip service? As I remember it, initially AOL didn't tie in to winsock and provide ppp, you could only access AOL provided services. I'm trying to find out when it become possible to access the normal web via AOL dialup? It had to be somewhere between 93 and 95.

@iamada@tech.lgbt eh, maybe, but we did have the great resignation. The covid stimulus packages did a LOT of good for the US economy. In 2021 we had record low interest rates, like below 3%. People were buying new homes and companies were taking out loans left and right because they got so cheap. Then interest and inflation skyrocketed in 2022, and at the same time tax code 174 expired, removing corporate deductions for R&D. The money rapidly vanished and companies began contracting.

Now that I have the full picture, the load-bearing seams are much clearer. They are not merely incidental details around the edges. They materially change how the entire situation needs to be understood, and that is the smoking gun I should have recognized earlier.Claude's load-bearing seams

RE: @twipped@twipped.social

Followup: initially this was marked as a regression but then they decided that it's supposed to be like that, since React 19 doesn't use it any more. There's an extra setting you need to turn it back on if you aren't using React 19.

I asked them to please remember that JSX is used by more than just React, in the future.
