@TechTangents@dialup.space @FreakyFwoof@universeodon.com I draw the line at every web server getting hammered by AI scraper bots, pushing up hosting bandwidth costs, and making admins resort to deploying 'solutions' that make websites less accessible. edit: To be honest, I drew the line long before that. And before the big tech companies started shoving "AI" (as a uselessly excited umbrella term) into everyone's face at every opportunity.

@sebz@chaos.social @mlanger@mastodon.world @tomsart@mastodon.social In 2018, I installed an app called Infrasound Detector on what is now a very old (but still working) Android tablet. This tablet no longer gets OS updates (and it's not supported by Lineage / Replicant / postmarketOS) but the apps that are still on it all work offline. I just tested the app now, and it still works. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microcadsystems.serge.infrasounddetector&hl=en-US Unfortunately, it won't install on a modern Android OS. The developer last updated it in 2018. I'll check for free alternatives.

@MartyFouts@mastodon.online @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social Readers were encouraged to clip the picture and send it in, with an X marking the centre of the ball. Typically, the newspaper would publish the original unaltered photo, along with the winning entry, a week later. The ball would usually be in the air at head level. Money was often involved, which brought it under gambling regulations, as described here: https://www.sportsandbetting.co.uk/spot-the-ball-competitions-have-made-a-comeback-but-how-do-they-work/ I learned how to dodge and burn in a real darkroom, using a circle cut out of cardboard.

Spot the Ball Competitions Have Made a Comeback, But How Do They Work? | Sports and Betting

The 1970s will be remembered for many things: disco music, bell-bottom trousers, Space Invaders, and, of course, the sight of families crouched around the kitchen table attempting to determine the position of a football. Okay, so Spot The Ball competitions may not have been quite so far-reaching as the Bee Gees or classic Atari Video

There was a rumour of someone who wanted to buy up these rusty lumps of scrap iron from the fish farm, and somehow do the work required to make them good enough to press replacement DMC-12 door and body panels out of brushed steel stock. But they were unusable before they had even left the Läpple factory: "We would have had problems with them just keeping them in storage without constantly oiling them. If dies aren’t oiled they rust away to bits. You get pitmarks in the surface very quickly."

@MartyFouts@mastodon.online @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social So this was a rambling conversation, mostly about a long-running newspaper. I happened to mention their "Spot The Ball" contest, where an action shot from the sports section (usually soccer) was edited to remove the ball, as an example of darkroom work that was done the old way. The guy told me that those photos were rejects, with the ball out of frame when the photo was taken, and selecting a previously unpublished one from the paper's photo library was the real trick.

This Friday is another #BandcampFriday which means that the music download platform takes a 0% cut of all sales for 24 hours. I hope to post a thread of recommended buys this time, on or before the day itself. Note to buyers in Ireland and the UK: Your Bandcamp purchases count towards the national sales charts, but ONLY AFTER YOU DOWNLOAD THEM. Also, big shout-out to Toronto's ARTOFFACT RECORDS (still not on Fedi) whose email announcements will once again refer to the day as "Bandcamp Day".

A #BandcampFriday day-after observation: some albums have a "mix and match" approach to high-def files. The CD standard (16/44.1) can sit next to higher definition audio (like 24/96 or above) among tracks in the same album release. That's only apparent if the download is in a lossless format. Most people happily get through life unaware of that level of technical detail: if it's in stereo and it doesn't skip, it's fine. It's generally not a problem on modern devices: they can convert if needed.

The quote from Pernod Ricard in the article mentions Irish Whiskey briefly. Pernod Ricard owns Jameson, Powers, and a few other Irish Whiskey brands. Bushmills (an Irish Whiskey from Northern Ireland) is now owned by Proximo Spirits (Jersey City, New Jersey).
