When they dug into the data, they found that the reason load times had increased was that they got a lot more traffic from Africa after doing the optimizations. The team’s product went from being unusable for people with slow connections to usable, which caused so many users with slow connections to start using the product that load times actually increased.

for Matrix calls, i'm allegedly supposed to set up this software called LiveKit that every instance needs to have, i guess? but. uh. their website is plastered all over with "AI", and "agents". literally first sentence on https://livekit.io describes itself as "An open source framework and developer platform for building, testing, deploying, scaling, and observing agents in production.". for fuck's sake, the source link in the corner goes primarily to the AI integration, and i have to click a dropdown to find a link to the actual LiveKit repository!!!! needless to say, i'm not exactly super keen on deploying this? but supposedly, the underlying spec is like, MatrixRTC and livekit is just one "transport" for that broader concept? is there an alternative transport i can use that will still work with my friends that host LiveKit deployments? if not, is there like, any alternative to LiveKit that implements the same API but isn't AI software for building AI agents and realtime voice AI and instead like. focuses on calling. or something.? or do i have to use specifically LiveKit if i want to call on Matrix?

They decreased the load times for a given situation, but as a consequence, the situations that the product was used in changed enough that real-world load times increased, on average, for all users, which was noteworthy because this is the exact metric they were hoping to decrease.

With modern file formats, the progressive image rendering can even load low-frequency details across the whole image before it refines the higher-frequency details encoded later in the image. You can even do crimes with it. Rendering of partially-loaded resources is awesome in my opinion and i'm glad browsers still support it better than ever.

"god, please give us a bountiful harvest this spring". you don't literally expect a response. there's not actually a meaningful interlocutor to address. in the abstract "chat, are we cooked" i feel like the underlying sentiment is "i think we're cooked" [statement in the first person] and you might ask it towards someone [addressing the third person] to convey that sentiment. but grammatically, it follows the rules for "chat" being the second person (even though they're not actually, in the broader conversation. "chat" does not refer to an interlocutor). i think it is more useful to analyse this as semantic vs lexical "degree of person". like, clearly, lexically, we must shape the sentence as if it is second person. but semantically, it's very clearly a third person term of address (and an abstract/omniscient one at that, like a deity), and the sentence is not meant to be interpreted as second person, even though that's the shape all the elements must have. this feels similar to singular "they": it still follows the "plural form" of lexical elements no matter if it actually refers to more than once individual. and we accept that it just Doesn't Imply Plurality. similarly, "chat" in "chat, are we cooked?" does literally use the second person lexical form. but we have to accept that it refers to a third person. alternatively, i think it also makes sense to analyze "chat, are we cooked?" as a single literal interjection. i don't think asking chat questions out of context is a generalizable grammatical construct. but i've heard this one. so i think it's fair to say that the entire phrase behaves like a single root of meaning; rather than literally being the sum of its parts.

where can i get a decent UPS that's safe and works well? i want to be able to rule out my house being at fault, and if the issue continues, i know there's something wrong with my computer or a cable or something. i know for power supplies that go in my computer, there's a whole tier list of energy efficiency and safety or whatever. is there such a thing for UPSes? supposedly they come with software to monitor power failures and safely shutdown; is there a particular brand that's "open source friendly" or otherwise works well with Linux? i would prefer not needing to run proprietary code for such a critical system function as power management, but i'll take any that has good Linux compatibility.

that video felt like a wild ride. it reminded me of Kenadian's Ted Ed parody. i was pleasantly surprised, however, to eventually learn that the gorilla video had an overarching topic and that every side-tangent felt relevant. it made a point that came across to me, which i did not really expect when i was at the 1/3 mark.
