@MissConstrue@mefi.social First of all, this is good stuff (I have yet to read the encyclical). But I'm unhappy all the people who are putting Leo down for not instantly fixing all the wrongs the church has done over the centuries. I think that's exactly what he's saying in his Tolkien quote: do what good you can in the time you are here. This seems like an example of the perfect being the enemy of the good.

My previous post might have had a bad link...

My Books of April review roundup is up at The Recliner. I look at Leoni Swann's Three Bags Full, Agatha Christie's Five Little Pigs, and Chuck Wendig's Black River Orchard.

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social Well, I just tooted a link to my review of an ancient home computer book written by Frank Herbert, which has received more engagement than anything else I've written here (as far as I remember). I did a few minor edits on Wikipedia a decade or more ago. And added a trivia item to a movie on IMDb, but I don't remember what movie it was.

@elena@aseachange.com I read in KOReader on my Kobo. I tried SimpleUI and ZenUI, but they slow things down too much (which seems to be only a me problem...don't understand it). Trying to get sync with Readest set up so I can hop between Kobo/iPad/iPhone when I want to. Currently in the middle of Ada Palmer's "Inventing The Renaissance" which is a hoot and eye-opening at the same time.

Gah. I'm on Medium, which I'm generally pretty happy with, and I follow the Mac O'Clock publication, which is full of "Thirty Ways To Use Your Apple Polishing Cloth" -type articles, which are occasionally useful.

But today this guy has a headline that says "25 Hidden Apple Features You've Been Missing For Years."

I click. The first five features are okay...one of them is new to me.

The next twenty features... which the author says don't need screenshots, they just take a sentence or two each... are in a Gumroad "book" that will cost me $7US.

I wrote a comment, telling him I didn't appreciate a headline promising one thing, then leading to a $7 Gumroad booklet.

Then I muted him. Good riddance.

@MissConstrue@mefi.social So true. All the DINK people I know (or retireds) do two or three cruises a year. I'm freshly retired as well, and could probably afford one, but I also get seasick pretty easily. The Viking longship cruises in Europe look like LOADS of fun...but you'd also have to drug me to get me on a plane to Europe (terminal claustrophobia). So it's just "no" all over, I guess.

@MissConstrue I have (sorry, had) Chrome on my Mac until about five minutes ago. I use it rarely, and hadn't fired it up for a few weeks. Now it won't ever have the opportunity. Time to get Chromium for those rare times Safari or Firefox won't do the job, I guess.

@mcmartin Oh, this is very exciting, since I'm now retired and am toying with the idea of learning 6502 machine language on the Apple II. I use Virtual ][ on the Mac for emulation. It allows me to do Z80 and CP/M as well, which is what first drew me to Apple II emulation; I was a Commodore 64 guy back in the day.
