RE: https://mastodon.me.uk/@brunogirin/117331468417104665 Now that yesterday's DNS issues have been sorted, I went back to this guide by @_elena@mastodon.social to finish with step 6 and a login page. However, I didn't bother with the DNS changes at all for the sub-domain and I'll explain why. All in all, it took 2 minutes. 1/5

I started my self-hosting journey with YunoHost following the guide written by @_elena@mastodon.social and here's where I'm at.

I requested a VPS and domain from Datomedia on Wednesday and got them both last night so I started the install this morning. I also had the YunoHost guide open on the side just in case. I used Datomedia as it's a provider local to Valencia.

So all this meant a lot of fiddling. But the cool thing about FOSS is that the maintainer of the Vaultwarden Yunohost integration added the Dex auto-config in a test branch this morning so it worked great so hopefully it will be available in main soon. Oh and last but not least, if you setup Vaultwarden on a sub-domain, you need to enable outgoing email on that sub-domain as it needs to send email notifications. Conclusion: Vaultwarden is not quite plug and play yet. 3/3

Now for the gory details. Yunohost uses an LDAP directory for authentication. Vaultwarden prefers an Open ID Connect server so the fix is to install another app called Dex and get them to talk to each other. This requires both Dex and Vaultwarden to have OIDC configurations that match. Dex can only be configured through the command line and Vaultwarden doesn't (yet) auto-configure it. On top, Yunohost strips basic auth HTTP headers that Dex needs for the OIDC exchange. 2/3

@pathfinder @autistics My grandmother lived mostly independently in her flat until she was 94. This was possible thanks to friendly neighbours and to the fact that she had shops and public transport on her doorstep. A friend just celebrated her dad's 90th birthday. He lives independently thanks to the community network in the village. He has an old people's group where the younger ones (60+) who can still drive pick up the older ones to go for a meal or drink.

@PKYo It reminds me of the first time I went sailing on a tall ship: 1 week on a ship in movement, then pub in harbour, then train to Oslo then plane to Heathrow. It's only when getting off the plane that my body realised the floor movement had changed, got really confused and started telling me that the floor of the terminal was moving. Every day for a week after that, I would spend the first awake hour of the day feeling the floor move.

@alberto_cottica Hendaye is the logical route based on distance but train connections at the Atlantic end of the Pyrenees are poor, both on the Spanish and French sides. Going the Madrid - Barcelona - Paris - Brussels route is more reliable and faster because it uses high volume high speed lines both on the Spanish and French sides.

@feff @JenJen Yep, that was the stated aim. Then the scummy scammers noticed that bypassing the puritan banks also meant bypassing fraud prevention and all safeguards implemented by the incumbent system + if they had enough money they could take control of that alternative system. It's as if fixing social problems with technical solutions had unexpected side effects. Who knew?
