@nek@hear-me.social #PamDuress [1] is a small #LGPL package, looks serious and well-written, developed since 2021, though should be checked by people with infosec experience. Fork for #phosh [2]. Up to the user to write or choose "duress" scripts - not necessarily deleting anything - could be emailing an alert or audio/photo files to a trusted address. Should be usable on any GNU/Linux desktop/laptop/phone for people whose threat model needs this. [1] https://github.com/nuvious/pam-duress [2] https://github.com/Sirr-OS/phosh-pam-duress

#WikimediaFoundation had a deadline of 24 July 2026 to voluntarily recognise #WikiWorkersUnitedUS [1], the newly created union of #WMF employees in the US. On 27 July, WMF replied "No!" @Walrus@toot.wales @henryk@chaos.social Per #MadeleineRogers [1], the abuse of procedures like fast-tracking is a component of #DemocraticBacksliding that is "buried in confusing complexities that are difficult for non-experts to disentangle,... outside of the attention of the general public". Rogers gives an analysis + specific suggestions [1] of how to improve #DemocraticResilience [2] before it's too late. Not easy because of the complexity, but doable. @HowTheyVoteEU @aetios @Tutanota Looks like you need to find the "Amendments" section at top of [1] to find Amendment 34 (Am 34) [2], which passed by 307 vs 306. The current rules for getting a professor title, which leads more or less automatically to getting a full professorship, have a key criterion of requiring two "outstanding" research achievements. It's up to five referees to interpret "outstanding" (and up to a committee to act on the referees' reports). The rules change each ~5-10 yrs.

Good to see that the tradition of #cosmologists having a broad view of the Earth-bound world is thriving. Two of #DavidWHogg 's #ArXiv_2602_10181 [1] overtly stated keywords:

"We beat ploughshares into swords" (p11)

Why do we do astrophysics?

At time of writing, large language models (LLMs) are beginning to obtain the ability to design, execute, write up, and referee scientific projects on the data-science side of astrophysics. What implications does this have for our profession? In this white paper, I list - and argue for - a set of facts or "points of agreement" about what astrophysics is, or should be; these include considerations of novelty, people-centrism, trust, and (the lack of) clinical value. I then list and discuss

It's the detailed reports from UN agencies based on proper investigations that are much more useful in information space. It's up to the rest of society (NGOs, activist networks, political parties, media, social networks) to curate that information and use it to get decisions made. *Some* UN agencies, like the IMF, WB, WIPO are likely more destructive than constructive, and corporations will oppose any reform.

@Mehrad@fosstodon.org This is something where cyberspace *might* help in terms of pressuring the media and governments. If you know of websites with petitions, or pressure-your-MEP/MP/member-of-Congress guides or similar, to #OpenTheIranianInternet , add them to this thread. I see lots of Manichean comments on Fedi about the #ceasefire, but very few boosts of comments by Iranians on Fedi, and I haven't seen any calls (apart from yours) for the 99% or so Internet blockade to be lifted.
