This blog post by Winnie Lim is really interesting to me: In mainland China, they've gone beyond 'home combo test for flu/covid/RSV'.
In China, you can ask to have a courier come to your door and swab you, take the swab to a lab for PCR testing, and they give results on 12 different germs!

It's accurate, fast, affordable, you get peace of mind, and if it needs treatment at least you know what to treat.

We could live in a better world.

@datum For instance, Foods That Will Win the War, from 1918, is a cookbook focusing on recipes that skip or minimize the use of wheat flour, meat, and sugar. It was meant to help with WW1 shortages. I got it for gluten-free bread recipes. It's free on Project Gutenberg. (Ignore the 'automated summary'.) https://gutenberg.org/ebooks/15464

Here's a piece of #GoodNews - they're restoring wetlands and re-planting wild rice in Detroit and nearby marshes.

This is part of an effort to restore habitat for native species, and to honor indigenous heritage. It's a partnership between one of the local tribes, government agencies, and nonprofits.

@datum Dietary flexibility helps some, too. Even if there aren't famines, interrupted shipping chains could mean temporary shortages, like in 2020 when white flour sold out, but the stores still had cornflour. Times like that, a recipe for cornbread made from cornflour-only can be really useful. So being willing to learn a few new recipes based on different ingredients makes it easier to adapt.

@cstross

Depends on whether the crops were already getting too much sun, vs. barely enough. The places where solar panels improve yield are places where it's dry and hot. *

Places that are plenty shady and humid already, can lose production due to panels. But if the extra shade doesn't cause your crops to develop fungal diseases, the lost harvest can be balanced out by the electricity as an alternate source of income.

@tefferbear I skimmed a memoir by Humphrey Bogart's son. The son said Lauren Bacall was that kind of stepmother: as long as he was fine, she did her own thing. But when the son came home all upset, expelled from high school *again* and expecting to be in deep trouble, Lauren Bacall folded him in her arms and told him it would be okay. Then she helped him find another school so he could finish his diploma. He said without her, his life might not have turned out nearly so well.

@emsenn@kolektiva.social You havea point. By way of supporting example, here's another person's post, comparing the restaurants that show on Google Maps, vs. the all the restaurants that exist. The town in this example is Salem, MA, USA. Google had plenty of chance to film the streets and index all the restaurants. They just don't want to show them all. https://better.boston/@aredridel/116536903745127768

@joe@f.duriansoftware.com My mom copied the card-file application from...I think it was Windows 3.1?...and carefully ported it onto every new computer, through at least Windows XP. It was a useful application, she had a lot of info already in it, and putting it on each new computer was much simpler than trying to extract the data to new software. Ran fine, never any instability or incompatibility. Just simple software that worked.

@Corax42@mastodon.social @colinmford@typo.social Very likely. Modern browsers don't even tell you what browser you're in (no title showing any more). People don't know the difference between a search box and the address bar. They've been trained to type into the first box they see and just trust that what comes up will include what they need. So they'll keep doing that because they don't know what a search engine is exactly, let alone what other ones besides Google exist.

@cstross@wandering.shop This also goes beyond age discrimination, into generational discrimination. In the USA, framing smoking as an 'adult thing' made it very attractive to teens, *reinforcing* the 'teens get hooked before reaching adulthood' pattern. Since Gen Alpha is already angry that older cohorts used up so much of the fun and easy possibilities, this will reinforce 'you're hogging all the good stuff' with 'you're turning us into a disempowered permanent underclass'. And for tobacco?!?

@argentum As J.P. Weiland put it, things spread more easily on cruise ships because it's so dense and enclosed. We see that with norovirus and flu: they can rip thru the whole ship in days. So if this is only spreading a little in the cruise ship, it will probably spread even less in the general population.

@csalzman I got as far as " My hope is that what defines the next era of tech is looking to the past" and went "Yay, STEAMPUNK, wooo! Let's go!" 😜 But yes, all-mechanical machines have a lot to recommend them. I miss the mechanical odometer on older cars - the decimal was a different color and it was easier to read. And the old mechanical voting machines that recorded your vote with metal gears were absolutely un-hackable. Let's bring them back.

@north My tiny hippie college had about 250 students. That was enough to have lines in the cafeteria, but an extremely limited dating pool. Fewer than 100 people could be nice if you have enough friends among them, you're on good terms with everyone else, and your dating/sex inclinations are all set. But it's very rare for all those conditions to apply at once.

@thematic@mastodon.green Yes, I was thinking it looked like a weather-proofed equivalent to a motorcycle. One seat (for the driver) and probably a little space for luggage in the back, and just enough room for a motorcycle engine in the front. There might be a market for that these days: almost as fuel-efficient as a motorcycle, but doesn't expose you and your groceries to cold / rain /slush. @vwdasher@weird.autos @craigmorgan@mastodon.social @weirdonwheels@social.chinwag.org

@koen_hufkens If I understand the linked article, at this point their proposal requires a special expensive camera (the Orb) to make the initial ID record and maybe also when you join any meeting you want to be "verified" at. Is that correct? If so, what do you think is the chance they could eventually do it with any camera? Sometimes I have to do Zoom meetings, and I don't want my biometric eye-prints recorded.
