Euclid Consortium
Official Consortium of ESA's Euclid mission on the Universe's dark matter, energy & expansion, 15 European countries + USA + CAN + JAP, 2000+ scientists + engineers. Telescope successfully launched 1 July 2023 and now arrived at L2. Scientific surveys started 14 February 2024. First science data released!
If you are in the London/UK area right now, #Euclid has an interactive exhibition at the #RoyalSociety #SummerScience exhibition. Open until Sunday 5 July. See you there!

West of #ESA's space astronomy center #ESAC Spain's major #wildfires are raging, threatening towns and people's livelihood. Fires are out of control and further development will depend on weather.
We hope that people stay safe and #Spain gets all the support it needs.
Both #NASA's Robledo and ESA's Cebreros antenna stations had their local personnel evacuated as a precaution, it is currently unclear if the fires reached either installation. Both are mainly operated remotely.
#ESAEuclid was designed to study 'invisible' dark energy. One of the methods is to use the effect of weak gravitational lensing to trace dark matter structures – also invisible in direct images – across cosmic time.
Ahead of its first major data release in November and first cosmology results in 2027, a first example of dark matter structure in the galaxy cluster Abell 2390, made visible with #Euclid data, has been published:
Would you like to be part of citizen science astronomy? We invite you to classify gravitational lens candidates in so-far unreleased #ESAEuclid data: "Space Warps – ESA Euclid DR1".
3000 volunteers have already made nearly 900,000 classifications, yet 70% of the project are still to be done.

A year ago, #Euclid's first small data release 'Q1' provided data for 63 deg² of sky to the world. Now an 'Astronomy & Astrophysics Special Issue' has been published with 41 articles about and around this release:
https://www.euclid-ec.org/q1-special-issue-aa/
Many of these articles were made public as preprints at the time of the Q1 release, but since then we added about a dozen extra, and they are now all peer reviewed. Open access, open science.
Time flies, doesn't it? #ESAEuclid launched three years ago today. 🎉 🚀 🛰️
For the second anniversary last year we revisited launch day:

Data from #ESAEuclid uncovered physics deep inside red dwarf stars. Scientists found a 'brightness gap' in #stars of a globular cluster, pointing to structural instability at certain masses.
While #ESA's #Gaia mission had found this process in relatively nearby stars, scientists from @stsci.edu for the first time showed this for a very old globular cluster, observed by #Euclid.

#ESAEuclid was launched 1000 days ago. 🥳
#ESA has already released #Euclid's Q1 dataset, Q2 (in the Galactic Bulge) and ~1900 deg² extragalactic data in DR1 will follow later this year. All instruments are healthy, satellite is working fine.

Space Warps is back! Do you want to join forces with Euclid Consortium scientists and discover gravitational lenses that no human has ever seen before?
We’re announcing the next Space Warps Citizen Science campaign with Euclid data – now previewing images from Data Release 1. Here is how to become part of the project:

The four Artemis II astronauts just set a record for human distance from Earth, 400.000 km. This also explains why "service" missions to #ESAEuclid, #JWST, or #ESAGaia are unlikely (and currently impossible): their location at the Sun-Earth L2-point is ~1.5 million km from here.
We would like to wish everyone joyful holidays and a good start into the Euclid Data Release 1 year 2026.

We welcome our follower number 2000 – at the start of the #ESAEuclid Data-Release-1-year 2026!
(Let's see when we'll get the next 26 followers!)
Not only #ESAEuclid saw the recent massive solar proton and X-ray outbreaks. Some of #ESA's other sats actually did science with it:

We followed up #ESAEuclid's near-infrared image of the Dark Cloud LDN 1641 with a comparison to the previous most used survey, 2MASS, and to a bespoke ground-based image in visible light.
Here's the comparison and writeup, including tools to pan, zoom, and experiment yourself:

We don't get your point. The images are perfectly aligned. The visible light images are partially intransparent for some of the stars or galaxies inside or behind the dust, respectively, which is the reason why in some of the regions there is hardly any resemblance.
In our blogpost we added a display tool so you can actually play with the data and different layers yourself:
