Wiki Workers United
mastodon 4.7.3We are a global solidarity union for the staff of the Wikimedia Foundation.
We are the people who do the work to provide a platform, services, and support that enable the Wikimedia communities to create and share Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects with the world.
We believe in the principle of nothing about us without us.
Check out this WIRED piece capturing so much of why WWU organized: https://www.wired.com/story/wikipedia-workers-vote-on-whether-to-unionize/
WMF US workers voted 158–14 to unionize, but this was never primarily about pay or benefits. It was about something more fundamental: a seat at the table as Wikimedia navigates major organizational and technological change.
We’re proud of what our workers built, grateful for the solidarity that got us here, and ready for what's next: including standing with our UK siblings as they pursue recognition 🌍
“Spending donor funds to fight worker unionization does not advance our mission of bringing the world's knowledge to all people, the mission I've spent years working at the Foundation to pursue.” -- Wikimedia worker, name withheld
Lwwuise is of course thrilled at the results! Big thanks to everyone, and to the #WikimediaCutenessAssociation for the support 💜
“I’ve been editing Wikipedia for over six years now, and it has felt so fulfilling to be able to contribute to a project which stands for freedom of information and expression… Editing Wikipedia means holding it accountable, and signing this petition means holding Wikimedia accountable…” - Grettoonist

“Today is my twenty year wikiversary. WMF has pissed off the community plenty of times, but this is different. This goes to the soul of the project.” —swpb
