@qurlyjoe@mstdn.social I just had a vision in which data center equipment became so cheap and efficient to build and run that public libraries offered web hosting and VPS services to anyone with a library card. Like, if libraries were once private artifacts only built by the obscenely wealthy until people voted to provide them as a public good, why can't the same happen for data centers?

@thepurpleoctopus@lgbtqia.space again, I am reminded of a moment in Small Gods (1992) by Terry Pratchett in which an engineer and a philosopher argue on which books to save from a vast library about to be destroyed by religious zealouts: Some books teach people how to live better while some books teach people how to *be* people. #discworld

@Mastodon@mastodon.social For those on the fence between Mastodon and Bluesky, see this 2024-11 article by @cwebber@social.coop comparing their two architectures. https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky/ My summary: Bluesky is an improvement upon Twitter but not decentralized due to cost: servers need datacenter-level compute and storage to collect and integrate all messages. In contrast, you can run Mastodon in a closet since it's more like email: each server is only obligated to push messages to recipients from those they follow.

I imagine people during World War 2 would have hesitated to call it that until the US got itself involved. Similarly, I think the current conflict may be known as World War 3 even though China has yet to get directly entangled. #israel #us #iran

Autocracy is the boring strongman default with the worst average need satisfaction and resource distribution across a population. Democracy is a rare dissolution of central power that allows those resources to be allocated not to the most sociopathically ambitious but intelligently to address relevant needs since democratically elected leaders are selected not according to nepotism from a microscopic set of loyalists but multidisciplinary competence from across the entire population.

When an evacuation order is given for an airplane, the overhead bins should all automatically lock themselves to prevent passengers from delaying egress hauling their carry-on luggage with them through emergency exit routes.

@melroy @nixCraft Yeah, I'm among those affected. I maintain a Windows 10 machine for when I absolutely have no other option to use a Windows executable (happens only a few times a year, usually when it's collab stuff involving DRM'd stuff when I must get permission from the mothership). It sounds like the Veracrypt developer already jumped through many hoops years ago to establish their credentials. I already track their PGP key, so I've no need for Microsoft to authenticate anything.

Housing is not an investment. If your literal beating heart is not physically within throwing distance of your property at least 10% of the year, you should be taxed up the wazoo.

That applies to landlords and mortgage owners as well as deed holders. Your mortgage was sliced up and mixed into some financial derivative? Everything in that mix gets taxed according to the rate of the most physically distant shareholder.

“Adaptive” standardized tests are not “standardized” because the computer assigns different exams to each student based on their answers to initial questions, capping their maximum score early on, incentivizing students to quit early to, using speedrunner terminology, avoid wasting time on a “dead run”. #sat #standardizedTesting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computerized_adaptive_testing
