French computer science engineer living in Japan. Shit guy with a shit life. Stuck in toxic and disfunctional relations. Bulimic programmer, casual hiker, art and science lover. Hopeless about humanity. Capitalism leads us to a remake of Mad Max. AI makes it even more nightmarish.

The animated led panels at the Kansai International airport are still there, and still very relaxing. I enjoy them each time.

French cheese vs the rest of the World, round 1.
Easy win for France. The rest of the World didn't even show up. They knew they had zero chance. 😛

"Let’s talk about LLMs"

"
As for what you should be doing instead of rushing to adopt LLM coding out of fear that you’ll be left behind: I think you should be listening to what all those whitepapers and reports and studies are actually telling you, and working on fundamentals. You should be adopting and perfecting solid foundational software development practices like version control, comprehensive test suites, continuous integration, meaningful documentation, fast feedback cycles, iterative development, focus on users, small batches of work… things that have been known and proven for decades, but are still far too rare in actual real-world software shops.
"

Arrived in France with no other problems than a full cup of burning coffee spilled on the pants mid-flight.
"North Pole" route this time (Japan - Bering strait - Groenland - Iceland - UK - France). Second time for me, but first time during daylight so I could enjoy the view on Groenland. It is sooo beautiful (sorry no pictures).
The shock of being completely "lost in translation" in my own country is here as usual.
The immediate pleasure of being able to chat casually with everybody without the "gaijin" or "God customer" interface too.

@marinheiro There was a lot of other leaves of that same plant there. All displayed the same kind of pattern, but this one only was strikingly similar to the fractal. So... growth process leading to something very very roughly mandelbrotish plus, accidentally this one happened to be mandelbroty enough to catch my eye and take the internet by storm apparently ?

@ell1e@hachyderm.io I feel hopeless... All I still find the will to do is maintaining my list of links on the subject: https://baillehachepascal.dev/2026/against_llms.php Your message too has a nice list of links. I intend to check them later and probably add some of them to my own list.

Playing cards with father.
"Dad, what are you doing ? You're supposed to shuffle the cards, why are you looking at them and placing them one by one in the pile ?"
"I *am* shuffling them. Look there, there are two same one in a row, that's not well shuffled, I'm correcting it."
😅😅😅

@matthewconroy Have a good rest, stay warm and treat yourself with some good hot honey ! ❤️ Even though there are not much details it's great someone made the effort to preserve these old photographs. Yes these 3D tricks rely on some assumptions about vision which everyone may not fit in. That's pity for you, because it's a fun experience.

@matthewconroy I hope you recover quickly! The animation is nice. Good depth feeling when looking at it. It reminds me when I made a 3D picture from 2 images, one with red filter applied and the other with blue filter. I had also made myself the glasses out of cardboard and coloured cellophane. That works well too, and it was fun. I did it as a demo for the archaeological company I've worked for in the past, for visualization of CG reconstructed artefacts. Everybody found it great, but it never went further because "no time and money for that".

Some time ago I read the article "The case for gatekeeping, or: why medieval guilds had it figured out" by @joanwestenberg . I even took a few hours to think about how that could be implemented. But I couldn't come up with something I was happy with, and moved on to other things. Today I've heard of the "human.json protocol", and it seems to me to be interesting, hence sharing here. What do you think about it ?

@BatchDrake I would be delighted to learn there indeed exists such a process. Given how the Mandelbrot set is built it seems to me impossible, but who knows, Nature is so unbelievable sometimes... 🙂

If only the rest of the day could be as peaceful and simple as the early morning concerto of birds chirping in the garden that woke me up.

I was hoping to look at the TV news in my hotel room but it looks like each channel asks to register a user account first (yes, one per channel) ! 🤦‍♂️👍

First dream back in France was of course a nightmare, but a small one: I'm at home and must leave quickly to catch a train, however before leaving I must complete the never ending refactor of try/catch-es in a huge code base due to a new type of exception in a third party library. The stress between the two contradictory tasks increases until it wakes me up.

@socketwench@masto.hackers.town This reminds me one day when a manager looked suspiciously at an OSS tool we were using because "it has no recent commits, it looks dead", while it was just because it was doing perfectly what it was supposed to do.

@matthewconroy@mathstodon.xyz Actually I was asking if you generated the image with some software or programming language or whatever. Now I'm also curious about what is an orthogonal differential equation. Is that something you build like orthogonal vectors, by replacing x with y and y with -x ? And looking at your image also makes me wonder if that could be the base for coherent noise generation. Take some differential equation, use part of the parameters as seed, and derive on the other ones to calculate the density of the function as the noise value at any given point. Thanks for asking about the earthquake. Everything has been quiet since then fortunately.
