@neilk @david_chisnall LLMs are displacing the open source movement itself. By flooding FLOSS projects with slop requests on one side, and copyright-washing their code on the other side.

why would labs give up on that recurring revenue

Because they wouldn't be able to sell the product for the price they need to stay afloat. How many people would spend a couple thousand dollars a month on Claude or ChatGPT? This is the real cost of their $200/mo subscriptions.

@jwcph Funnily enough I wanted to kind of challenge you with saying that it's unlikely a programmer would be able to write a complex program "by hand" (using assembly) but... a sufficiently motivated programmer probably could. It would be an absolutely miserable experience, you'd have to invent a lot from the first principles, but in the end it's all system calls and the documentation is out there.

@tankgrrl@hachyderm.io @mttaggart@infosec.exchange I mean, I assume that's what an internal investigation was about? They probably want to properly call the author and ask them if they used AI or not, what were their sources, etc. I don't think it's fair to mock them for wanting to conclude an investigation.

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz First of all, past actions flying under the radar don't justify current actions. Second of all... Yes, because AI. Duh. When your company's single stated (!) purpose is basically to destroy the job market and turn people into serfs, people tend to react negatively. What a surprise.

@f09fa681@digitalcourage.social @wststreet@ani.work @nixCraft@mastodon.social I remember when they were moving from rc to systemd, and at some point the whole system went “nuh-uh, you need to (manually) reconfigure everything or it’ll stop working”. Then, after a couple years, they decided to do the same thing with updating the network framework. Expecting the user to reconfigure it all manually.

@madduci@mastodon.social @stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe To be fair, it's not really new phenomenon. There was Heroku which allowed you to deploy an app (somewhere...) with just a git push. Now there's Kubernetes and Git ops which allows developers to really not care about deployment. Really, unless it's their own pet project, a developer rarely does any deployment to a production machine.

@fedithom @jwcph My point is that you can apply similar logic to compilers and programming languages. If you’re proficient at making web apps in Python, you maybe *could* make one in assembly, but it would take a lot of time and effort and, as I said, would probably not be a good experience.

@pathunstrom Hmm. I used to use Spyder (https://www.spyder-ide.org) but it was a long time ago. Ultimately, for Python, I think your best bet would be to use Vim/Neovim¹/Helix/Emacs with a language server. ¹ AFAIK both Vim and Neovim contain AI-generated code, in case it matters to you.

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz "defund blender entirely" Why do people act like Blender is an uwu smol bean that has to cry to get non-AI money? They have tons of sponsors! And yes, you could argue that NVidia and AMD are far from angelic, but yes, I do think their donations are far more acceptable - and understandable - than Anthropic's. As for "siphoning money out of [gen AI]" - that's just nonsense. Anthropic wouldn't donate if they weren't certain of ROI.

@danirabbit@mastodon.online Because a web app lets me share functionality on desktop and mobile without needing to:

  1. build 3 separate apps;
  2. pay Apple for the privilege of having an app on iOS;
  3. still deal with server and API stuff because I want the shared data.

Although, there are also problems of: a) Most services won't just open your API to you (something that #EdZitron points out in #BetterOffline as a barrier for LLM agents too) b) Even if you reverse-engineer an API, you'll probably need to do a gajillion things just to do something simple, because frontends and APIs are bloated to hell nowadays.

@fabiosantoscode@mastodon.social No, I'm saying that before str was a strictly ASCII string (or maybe Latin-1), and if you wanted anything else you'd have to use the unicode type. And if your program/library didn't think of using the unicode type, then tough luck, you will only be able to work with Latin letters.

Hello Fediverse. I'm looking for a job. I'm a web developer of 12 years of experience (mostly backend, but I can do some frontend in a pinch). Microservices, new APIs, refactorings - I did it all. I primarily worked with #Ruby and Rails, but I have experience with #Python and #Elixir. Currently residing in Israel, but I'm happy to work remotely on contract, or maybe even relocate. RE: @paco@infosec.exchange

It's just, would be funny if it weren't so sad.
Every time I see an LLM being somewhat useful, I start doubting myself. Am I attaching myself too hard to this? Am I being intelligence-drained right now?

And then I read about something like this, about someone who downs the whole LLM thing like an alcoholic downs a bottle of vodka.

@ricardoharvin @jwcph Maybe? I don't know. It was defnitely not my intention. Maybe I've read too deep into this but, for me, writing in assembly is the best analogy for woodworking with manual tools. Using a high-level language would be like working with well-developed power tools. (Using AI... well, the advocates think that it's like working with a super-fancy programmable machine but the motors are busted and the tolerances are between "frick" and "all".)

@atax1a@infosec.exchange @andnull@social.nouveau.community I rarely write tests for my hobby projects. Mostly because it's just my thing, and it's easier for me to just click through the UI. But it becomes a whole different can of worms when it's a work project. Especially if there's a change that can break a lot of functionality around it. Tests can be a lifesaver.
