People really cannot understand that "every hobby space operates like an extension of the workplace" is a massive problem for hobbyist software. The number one tread we see from LLM users is a conflation of something you do for your own passions and something you are doing for employment or enterprise (current or hypthetical). We actively shape the culture of the concatenative programming discord away from it.
If there is some practice you don't want to do, then don't. If you have a project that isn't fun anymore, then stop. It's clear that profession practices have not made being a programmer better nor has it lead to a culture that produces better software.

I won't lie, the shift from "free software is something you just put out into the world and maybe you get emailed patches" to "free software is an open collaborative community with infinite real-time feedback and obligation for supporting said software" has gotta be the greatest design shift in terms of capital's ability to exploit free labor and entrapping people in projects that have taken own their own lives
You can imagine walking away from Omelas all you want, but if you couldn't imagine it before the author has to make it "believable" for you and you can't imagine where those that walk away will go, then there is no point in walking away. You'll just make another place you can believe in again. It certainly won't be better if events there don't take COVID percausions.

The actual worse thing about LLMs is when someone produces an actual feat of passion, if I have no repertoire with the person, I immediately distrust it.
Programming Language Idea: A garbage collected programming language, but your program's actual logic and behavior exist within the stopped world of the GC pauses. The program you write simple exist to generate garbage to execute the intended logic.

Since it's crossed my feed a few times, for those that care, Cagire is stealthing slop. It hides all it's Claude crap via the .gitignore. It's another slop object hitting the catlang/stacklang space.

There are many criticism of Go to make, but I never like how it uses pointer syntax and allows for return a pointer to a local allocation such as:

That just makes my dangling pointer detector glitch out.
Omg, is the chromebook plague on education actually ending? I would love nothing more than School Issued Chromebooks to be a relic of the past and regarded as the biggest waste of public money on private interest in the history of the world.
Rather iratated that John and Erg (the current factor maintainers) are vibecoding all over factor quietly doing it off branch and in ways that keep the main commit history clean of Claude co-authored commits. They had to roll back a massive vibecoded PR to the core VM. That code always felt super frail whenever I dug into the VM, I would not be prancing around with buckshot

Our actual struggle with statically typed languages is how we will atomize every piece of data into the smallest indivisible type, but then have no means to compose it back together. Or if you can compose it back together, you can't decompose or reshape it later.

The #CatJam 2026 has ended. This year had a strong showing from uxn! A lot of people experimenting with catlangs for the first time or trying to make their little languages Do a Thing.

Heart breaking: creature discovers OCaml cannot do the DSL trick as well as Lua. when_ returns a record with otherwise as a field. However, you have to wrap the call with parens cause OCaml's syntax doesn't allow f "foo" .bar "baz" (it has to be (f "foo") .bar "baz" as far as we can tell)

Really gotta assembly my website todo list, pick some days, and just iron out all my backlog tickets. Make some little tools for doing a gallery how I want it, a comic paginator, and also a quick way to make game pages.
