I did not know that.

Books aren't dead
About twenty boxes of books were thrown onto the street from my apartment building. That made me sad, but I’m not going read 98% of them. But they were taken anyway, and quickly. Books aren’t dead. They’re just sleeping.
Back in the nineties it was decided that all websites should be free. Part of that was the absence of easy payment methods, part was FOSS influence.
Are there any other important causes? Also, is there a good overview article somewhere?
Spent the entire day writing. It'll take some more time, but eventually I'll have a nice two-parter to publish.
So my Firefox 155 on one of my computers suddenly refuses to load all kinds of files, among which all style sheets, citing CORS errors and whatnot. On my other computer it works fine.
Turning off my usual combo of AdBlock + Ghostery solves the issue (both must be disabled for most sites) ...
but can anyone please tell me what the effing eff is going on? I don't even understand enough to formulate a search query. Some technical terms would be greatly appreciated.
Is the email system breaking down?
Just now I went to an art gallery and a board game shop, and both proprietors complained that their mails never arrive any more.
Coming home, I discovered a mail I was expecting for days in my spam box, while there was no reason for doing so.
Is the pressure getting too high or something? It's getting impossible to mail people.
An example of a website being irrelevant bullshit that happened to trigger me. Why didn't a UX designer pull the emergency break?
Related to the recent "what-did-Chrome-do-shipping-all-these-ugly-interest-invokers-they-must-be-evil-oh-wait-no-i-think-i-have-the-experimental-flag-set" flap:
Would it be a good idea if browsers showed a clear "Experiments Engaged" message in their toolbar or somewhere if the experimental flag is engaged?
I know from my QuirksMode testing days that this can be really really tricky to remember and a big, user-friendly visual might help.
I bought a new city bike. After a bikeless period of at least 16 months or so, maybe longer.
For the first five minutes I biked like a tourist; all kinds of navigational, Amsterdam bike rule-following, and collision avoidance systems had to come online from their long slumber. But it went better during the next 15 minutes of bike ride.
My muscles, unfortunately, are completely atrophied and will need a few weeks to reset.

Why is a strikethrough called a line-through in CSS?
It's been like that since at least 1998, but I forget every time I need it.
@hdv@front-end.social @torgo@mastodon.social I planned on being with the meet-up tonight to say Hi, but unfortunately the train chaos makes it very hard for me to come. So I'm afraid it'll be another time.
What type is a CSS counter? There is no type . It sure as hell isn't an (that's what I want, but it seems there's no easy way of converting it) or a .
? Something else? No type at all?
I am learning to hate counters.
It's revealing that my default name for a new layer in Gimp is now NEW FUCKING LAYER. Speaks of frustrations past.
Interesting. I didn't know it was ever proposed.
Test to see if the bsky bridgy thingy still works with Eurosky.
There is no children-count() similar to sibling-count(), is there?
For the first time in many years I’m at a conference in Tuschinski: @smashingconf@mastodon.social
Is there a closely-guarded secret to using in Safari? Or is it just not working?
More good ideas:
Has there been discussion about a variant of sibling-index() and -count() that doesn't count hidden elements (display: none)? Might conceivably be useful.
The second part of my column-filled grid idea: why the original idea doesn't work very well but is nonetheless the least bad option right now.
My sister asked me to translate “huppelkuttenhouse” into English. I don’t know. Anyone?
I forgot I created an entire media query test suite.
Wouldn't be too hard to expand it with a container query test suite.
So it appears that
- the content property of ::before doesn't accept integers as a value
- it is not possible to convert an integer to a string in CSS
Use case: print out values of sibling-index() and a few friends for research purposes.
And is it even possible for CSS if() to compare two numbers? Seems not.
color: if(sibling-count() <= var(--comp): red);
(--comp is a number)
"The Web Developer Tools panel has crashed."
???
Never seen that one before. (Firefox)
God almighty why is Mastodon so fucking impossible to work with?
If I quote-boost my own conference, where can I say that yes this is OK and I in fact want everyone to be able to boost any post from this account? I see zero zip zilch.
If an AI reads all articles on your site, how long does that process take? Does it make more than one HTTP request for the HTML page itself (discounting CSS, JS, images, and such)?
I always assumed the AI would download the text (or the full HTML) and put it somewhere in memory to read from it as required, but is that true?
Any pointers would be appreciated.
@pndc@social.treehouse.systems Thanks.
But if Grok hits your site after a relevant query, it apparently doesn't do a last-modified check, and ... it seems from your reply that it downloads way too much data. Any idea why that is? I'm trying to avoid the conclusion that it's just sloppily programmed, and assume that there's actually a reason.
OK, what the actual HELL is going on with FIREFOX 155.0.1?
The one on my Mac Mini point-blank refuses to load style sheets and shows related error messages. The one on my Air works absolutely fine.
Yes, same version.
