@fribbledom@mastodon.social Indeed. When some people say "This is the new normal" do they mean heat exactly as it is now or increasing heat year on year? I suspect the former.

I find it odd that the parties involved haven't set up their own instances over which they have control. But maybe it's just too much effort for them and they prefer 1000s of bot followers 😉

@LaChasseuse@mastodon.scot @fionaorkneynews@mastodon.scot I did my PhD on the occurrence of Uranium in the Caithness / Sutherland area in the late 1970s (same time as Orkney 'uprising'). The locations I examined were very similar to Orkney. There are many sedimentary rock horizons with enhanced U levels (typically a few hundred ppm) however these are too low to mine. There are some very small localised much higher mineral concentrations which are caused by U being 'sweated' out of the rock. 1/2

@leavex@mastodon.social In Scotland most political parties seem to be on X still. Scottish Greens make extensive use of Mastodon and are encouraging people to use alternatives to the big US corps. SNP seem to be using Bluesky. Missed opportunity here, when they could set up their own Mastodon servers. X posts are still used as sources of info for a lot of printed press. Cannot understand why so many prefer to swim in the sewer. No matter your intentions you'll get covered in sh!t...

@LaChasseuse@mastodon.scot @fionaorkneynews@mastodon.scot but these are too small to have any commercial value. I have seen the Yesnaby mineralisation and believe it to be the same as in Caithness - no commercial value. I don't believe there are any mineable U desposits in the Caithness area (inc Orkney). BGS seems to agree (but politicians on a mission ignore science). https://ukinventory.nda.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Fact-sheet-uranium-mining-and-milling.pdf https://earthwise.bgs.ac.uk/index.php/Economic_geology_of_Orkney_and_Shetland#Uranium_ores 300ppm U is similar to some horizons I found in Caithness (though up to 700ppm if I remember correctly).

@humanhorseshoes @CarolineLucas I don't think that's what she is saying at this point. It would be a long process to re-join the EU. But areas like Erasmus show that steps are being taken. Also there isn't a queue, membership is based on meeting certain criteria (https://enlargement.ec.europa.eu/enlargement-policy/conditions-membership_en) Though, I suspect, the EU would be extremely cautious of a UK where grifter Farage and ReformUK Ltd held any significant power.

@djm62@beige.party I've been using murena.io (NextCloud based) since I got the Fairphone 6 at the beginning of the year. It offers a lot with 1Gb space free. Costs for more storage are reasonable. https://murena.com/whats-the-alternative-to-google-drive/ And https://murena.com/workspace/ It allows you to share folders publically with no log in. So far, I'm happy with what it does and how it works! You don't need the phone but it integrates nicely (very fast sync). Haven't tried the Vault yet.

@fionaorkneynews@mastodon.scot @LaChasseuse@mastodon.scot I'm surprised you didn't get any results. I'd guess they were within safe levels otherwise you'd have been advised. The places that tend to have high radon are granite houses built on top of certain granite rocks. Helmsdale is one - higher than usual U and potassium (K). Problems came when the houses were 'sealed' with double glazing and no ventilation.

@drsimevans@mastodon.energy We've had a heat pump dryer for a few years. Advantages: Relatively low power (<500w); gentler heat; half the cost of our next 'goto' for clothes drying (dehimidifier in a small bathroom) - which, itself, is cheaper than a 'standard' tumble dryer. There's always the moaners who prefer to pay way more than they need to for the sake of some perceived tradition 🙂
