The title says it all: Lambs grazing under an Oregon solar farm had 38 percent less grass in front of them than lambs in the open field alongside, and they put on the same weight to the gram, because shade makes a pasture grow less of everything except protein The lambs also needed less water. https://spacedaily.com/b-lambs-grazing-under-an-oregon-solar-farm-had-38-percent-less-grass-in-front-of-them-than-lambs-in-the-open-field-alongside-and-they-put-on-the-same-weight-to-the-gram-because-shade-makes-a-pasture-g/

Lambs grazing beneath an Oregon solar array gained weight at statistically similar rates despite 38 percent lower pasture production, as higher forage quality helped offset the smaller crop

Shade-grown pasture produced less herbage but higher-quality forage, supporting lamb growth rates that were statistically comparable with those in the open field.

This is not an #agrivoltaics story but inspiring nevertheless: "A burrowing owl’s entire security system is sightlines: flat, open, sparsely vegetated ground where nothing can stalk it unseen. A utility-scale solar farm is exactly that — graded, low-cut, fenced against most large predators — with bonus features no prairie offers: the shaded ground beneath the panels, where Clark says the owls hunt insects and “loaf” through the desert afternoons." https://scienceblog.com/b-biologists-drove-19-burrowing-owls-evicted-by-a-phoenix-housing-project-50-miles-into-a-10000-acre-solar-complex-and-lowered-them-into-40-plastic-burrows-every-female-laid-eggs-within-a-month-and-29/

Biologists drove 19 burrowing owls evicted by a Phoenix housing project 50 miles into a 10,000-acre solar complex and lowered them into 40 plastic burrows — every female laid eggs within a month, and 29 chicks fledged the first summer, because open ground

A solar farm designed to fight climate change became an unexpected refuge for an endangered owl when scientists discovered that panels cast the perfect shadow for ground-nesting predators to hunt.

In the 1970s "Reykjavík built a large-scale geothermal district heating system. Other towns in Iceland followed, many switching within a decade. “This took unwavering political support. Financial support mechanisms that helped ordinary households make the switch without ruinous upfront costs,” Frostadóttir said. Now, nearly every home in Iceland is heated with renewable energy, and more than 90% of it is geothermal." https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/sep/21/world-leaders-climate-crisis-el-nino #ClimateWeek

Water is for "the public interest". "A group of 28,000 irrigators has lost a $1.5-billion class action against the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA). Interesting in a scary way:

https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/americas-finance-guide/national-debt/

That's interest payments.

And it's more than the overall budget requested by the US military department for FY2026, which was $961.6 billion

Heat deaths in west Europe: "Germany recorded the highest toll, with an estimated 11,900 excess deaths linked to heat since April, according to the Robert Koch Institute. Data from government agencies and research institutions in Spain, France, the UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands put the region’s heat-related death toll at over 25,000." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-08-06/heat-deaths-top-25-000-in-europe-as-scorching-weather-persists

@Snoro@mastodon.social This opinion is one that only sees the tech. Much like too many pieces on e-cars miss the bigger picture (there are more ways to move people), so focusing on ACs misses the larger context. There are many and proven cool ways to do urban cooling, and they can be extremely effective without drawing a single Joule of electricity. AFTER you do that, sure, turn on the AC.

"The Paris Agreement only works if each country is doing its fair share. Climate Action Tracker has rated South Africa’s targets as “insufficient”, projecting that if every country followed the same approach, warming would pass 2°C and could reach 3°C. The tracker states that South Africa should cut its emissions by 40% between 2022 and 2035 to do its fair share of limiting warming to 1.5°C. The current target range represents a 16% to 29% cut." https://groundup.org.za/article/sa-reaching-its-emissions-targets-but-they-too-easy/

SA may reach its emissions targets, but are they too easy?

If every country follows this approach, global warming could reach 3°C above pre-industrial levels
