Germany snubs #Palantir, chooses French supplier for internal intelligence agency In all seriousness, choosing Palantir, funded by antidemocratic billionaires to defend German democracy would have been madness. #digitalsovereignty https://www.dw.com/en/german-intelligence-offices-snub-us-based-palantir-software/a-77160897

Great news today the French government have launched their own Visio video conferencing tool #digitalsovereignty But the PR stories, while explaining it is French built, don't mention it is Open Source and based on LiveKit - so any government can reuse what they have done. https://www.euronews.com/next/2026/01/27/france-to-ditch-us-platforms-microsoft-teams-zoom-for-sovereign-platform-amid-security-con https://github.com/suitenumerique/meet

A few points on this rubbish about "cuts" because #Palantir was going to "save" the Met money: (1) Palantir are the software equivalent of a heroin dealer. "First one free". This is a problem the police should understand. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c75ylvzyy6xo

What Internet policy generally amounts to is "here I have a hammer" so "everything is a nail". Such as #AgeVerification right now. "Finally! We can solve the problem!" While a systems analysis will tell you that AV leaves the problem (attention ad markets) entirely intacts.

It is equally obvious why the UK government does not what this discussion. The UK is economically betting on US tech investment, especially from #AI. We are dependent on US tech for defence, nuclear deterrents. A large chunk of our economy is US owned.

RE: https://social.openrightsgroup.org/@JamesBaker/116331730134894398

The current model of bans and AV leads to escalation of controls on users and content, as each round of restrictions fails to deliver. And each set of restrictions embeds state reliance on Big Tech's power, and barriers to safe, non-commercial, community driven social media.
