@MarkAB@mastodon.world @japipes@zirk.us @benroyce@mastodon.social @log@mastodon.sdf.org @thegarbagebird@theblower.au @lzg@mastodon.social voting in national elections is the absolutely bare minimum act of democracy. If you want good candidates you need to get involved locally, vote in smaller elections, make sure bad candidates don't go unopposed in small elections. Petty local bureaucracy is where most people actually see democracy in action and draw broad conclusions ("why is my local library so badly neglected? This country is falling apart! It must be the immigrants")

@wayne @ChrisMayLA6 the BBC has form on this - South Cambs DC has used a four-day week to solve a really bad recruitment and retention problem with positive results, but the article spends most of its time trying to find negative voxpops from people who don't know anything about it:
BBC News - Can South Cambridgeshire council do five days' work in four? - BBC News

@NikkiDimes@lemmy.world @Wlm@lemmy.zip racism is about far more than tone. If you've trained your AI - or any kind of machine - on racist data then it will be racist. Camera viewfinders that only track white faces because they don't recognise black ones. Soap dispensers that only dispense for white hands. Diagnosis tools that only recognise rashes on white skin.

@return2ozma@lemmy.world so they crash 12* more than human drivers, even though they currently *have* human drivers?! The AI makes human drivers 12* worse. Cool.

@oldladyplays I kind of imagine all of these billionaires just so removed from humanity at this point - surrounded by yes-men terrified for their jobs - that they view entire populations not as individual humans, but through a literal computer/TV screen showing whatever their favourite medium is. Friend count metrics, NPCs, Prime subscriptions, reality TV redshirts, ad views.

@cstross@wandering.shop our local radio station franchise (now a Heart) used to use the tagline "we don't talk all over your favourite songs" and it was *absolutely* aimed at the "press record as soon as the DJ stops talking" market (plus it meant they could leave it on a playlist when they didn't have enough DJs)

@benroyce I've been heartened to hear of some of the resistance being organised - both by looking on here, but also by listening to these two episodes of a British podcast presented by ex BBC journos (Emily Maitlis is the one who did the Prince Andrew sweating interview):
https://pca.st/episode/cbf7fa24-0b9c-44c4-b3af-8302a1e85ebc
https://pca.st/episode/4d7ccd12-34d0-444e-a071-673a12f6fe38
I've mostly gone off their in-studio stuff as it's a bit breathlessly inside baseball, but this just seems like honest documentary.

She's mostly trying to make the point to some of her fellow journalists who are ridiculously clay-footed and don't seem to have realised that they haven't "made themselves a nice little corner of X", they're just swimming in fascist waters now.

@thecasualcritic @KimSJ @wayne @ChrisMayLA6 actually more than Brexit I get annoyed about the wall-to-wall "immigrants are bad/immigration is high/small boats are illegal" and "taxes are too high/increasing taxes is bad". Neither of these hegemonies are ever ever questioned.
Also I am increasingly entertained by how much time Chris Mason dedicates to how bad Starmer/Reeves are. The "Reeves lied!" thing went on for about two weeks

@qole @pluralistic just been reading about the Dawn supercomputer in Cambridge and found this article from June 2024.
https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/analysis/breaking-dawn-inside-the-uks-newest-ai-supercomputer/
On the topic of why they chose Intel over Nvidia:
'“Nvidia’s direction is clear,” Dr. Calleja says. “Every move it makes is to make its ecosystem more proprietary so there’s more lock-in and it can keep its share price at the current level. It’s madness and it has to change because the ecosystem needs competition.'

@futurebird@sauropods.win @peterbrown@mastodon.scot according to the news agents podcast (they did two episodes from there) there is a network keeping eyes on unfamiliar cars, logging licence plates, turn up with whistles as soon as ice is spotted anywhere. They're doing an amazing job. And clearly it is freaking ice out.
https://pca.st/episode/cbf7fa24-0b9c-44c4-b3af-8302a1e85ebc honestly worth a listen.

@Gsus4@mander.xyz @TheBat@lemmy.world the more worrying thing is how many times it has made something up that nobody has spotted because it looks normal.
Proofreading spots spelling/punctuation/formatting issues. You need a deeper copyedit, not just a scan, to check the sense of something. And that won't necessarily catch factually untrue, but perfectly plausible, things.

@Xenny@lemmy.world @frongt@lemmy.zip it's definitely not good for words with any technical meaning, because it creates references to journal articles and legal precedents that sound plausible but don't exist.
Ultimately it's a *very* expensive replacement for the lorem ipsum generator keyboard shortcut.
