I already don’t use it anymore so what do I care, back when they had SMS and Signal, people would download it “just for a protest” and delete it without disassociating their number, and then I’d go to message them but instead of defaulting to SMS because they deleted the app signal defaulted to “still has acct,” but since they’d deleted the app the message gets delivered to but only to like, the server I guess. So now to text those 5 people I have to make Messenger my default, send an SMS, they don’t respond immediately so I switch back to Signal as default, then they reply so I have to switch my default back to Messenger to reply, and so on. Sure, now that is probably fixed with them dropping SMS support, maybe, but I’m already using Delta Chat since it took them SIX FUCKING YEARS to solve that and I wasn’t going to wait, so, sucks to suck I guess.

The main problem with XMPP (well for me anyway) is that the implementation of OMEMO that 99% of the apps use is woefully out of date, and Conversations (and their ilk) seem to actively resist updating because unless EVERYONE does it at the same time it will break interoperability. The second problem for me is the ease of use, I’d have to physically set up accts for literally all my contacts on Jabber (everyone I know is stupid [it’s really just learned helplessness and it pisses me off to no end]), but on Delta I can legit say “here, click link” and it’ll bring up their app store on DC, then they DL and make an acct and then I say “click the link again” and they’re directly connected to me, done. So much easier. And then next time I see them I can say “hey give me your phone I’m gonna do stuff to your Delta acct” and I can add relays and create a backup for them, but at least we can get started easier. Besides, they are working on forward secrecy afaik, and they’re one of the only teams making these apps that seems to acknowledge metadata’s existence, honestly they seem like one of the best options all things considered. Sure if your threat model is the US gov then maybe not, but better not use Intel or AMD or any android (incl Graphene, and I’m a user myself) or iphone then. Carrier pigeons maybe.

Under connectivity issues:

It's blocked by all of Australia, Comcast and other US companies, and more, apparently. Found another site through litterbox's faq ("Are you based on uguu.se?" section). That worked, but then the video seems unplayable from an iPhone even though it's just an HVEC H.265 MP4 so idfk, I found what I asked for but gave up one step later lol. For anyone else with my same OG question however: uguu.se, files last 3 hours. Seems to work in so far as "not blocked," even if the video in my case is unplayable on an iPhone.

Same here, I’m using Delta Chat. Honestly it’s pretty great and has all the features I need from a chat app, and it’s decentralized and resilient allowing for multi-relay set-ups. It’s not a discord replacement, though.

I’m gonna pile a few on (I’ve mentioned them elsewhere in this thread, but…) Those aforementioned “rooms?” Element took the ability to search them away but you could still join if you knew the room addr (search may be back now), why? I tried element X, it also stopped working on me like element regular did, and like this other poster complained about. Yeah I honestly never used it myself, but people seem to want a direct feature replacement without the privacy issues and to be fair Matrix is closer to fitting that bill than Delta Chat. I personally don’t need that, so Delta works for me (but even if I did need it, I still can’t trust Matrix).

Also nothing stops [insert group that worries you] from spinning up a server to collect metadata, unless as I said you host your own separated server without any federation. Yeah I gave up on Element/Matrix too, for other reasons. First of all the clients don’t work for shit and every update breaks something IME, got tired of that. Also for all of my normie friends and family it was “too hard” to use, I disagree, but regardless what good is a chat app if I have nobody to use it with? Further, the one friend I did convince to join also joined the public Ras Pi room, and some dickhead posted CP in it, he saw, and then I had to explain “no, this isn’t a ‘pedo app,’ that is spam and they get banned,” and I’m gonna be real I don’t want to have to do that again and I can’t in good faith recommend my mother use a goddamn app that very possibly could spam her with CP. So, I moved to Delta Chat. Fixes all those problems, no complaints. Easy to use, easy onboarding, no discoverability, just chats.

Yeah they should be fighting me lmao (not that I want to), I’m not ok with the app. It’s dogshit and so is the linux electron app, both barely work and break themselves all the time, the UI is overly complicated (even for some of the features I do like, like having three different passes [pass, recovery, and idr the third I had] was actually pretty sweet, but my less techy friends had issues, one lost his whole acct, yes he’s dumb but that ain’t changing, still love him lol). Even if another app actually worked (and last I saw ALL lack feature parity with Element) Matrix itself is still a metadata pissing AMDOCs (Israeli company, spied on US telcom, for those unaware) originated protocol, honestly I’m out on that alone. I’m a Delta Chat supremacist lmao, down with Matrix.
