It's very obvious that we are very likely headed towards a global recession, driven by the problems Trump has created in the gulf. Of course financial institutions are preparing for the eventuality, and that alone can cause a financial crash if it accelerates. It's extremely difficult to estimate the risk or chance, but the fact that (almost) everybody is aware, makes the risk bigger, because for some weird reason, everybody preparing for a financial crisis doesn't make it less likely because people are prepared, but instead makes it more likely because nobody does anything when the uncertainty passes a certain threshold. And at that point the economy collapses.

North America has little competition because of the tariffs on everything not made in USA. AFAIK Canada is getting out of that shadow. I read an article about a month ago, how Canadian imports were routed through USA, and that it stifled EV adoption in Canada.

It's amazing how much batteries have decreased in price, we now not only have mid range cars that can be electric, the lower range sub compacts have been entering the EV market too. Among all the shit happening today, this is actually a bright spot, making an EV more affordable to normal households. Maybe except USA that is clearly behind now, despite Tesla was a major influence in the early days of EV.

The impact of higher minimum wage on prices is way less than most people think. First thing is that wages is only a minor share of the price already, with obviously minimum wage work again being only a minor part of the total. The total of minimum wage workers in most companies is less than what the management makes. Sometimes even less than just the CEO. Have you ever heard fear of inflation or that prices increase because the CEOs are overpaid? I haven't, probably because the narrative is driven by the 1%, and has little to do with real economics.

No this is too stupid, obviously it would be a major monopoly issue, and would never be allowed by authorities. USA yes, because they effectively have zero monopoly control and consumer protection, but the rest of the world would not allow it. It is not funny, and just a waste of space on my screen.

Or is that just propaganda to prevent palm oil from taking to much marketshare? You need at least 3 times as much farmland to make an equal amount of any other form of vegetable oil. Most farm oil used in Europe is from sustainable farming, Indonesia makes 50% of the palm oil on the global market, and they claim to have regulated palm oil farming to be sustainable. Palm oil is an excellent oil, it is efficient to grow because of very high yields, and it's been used for thousands of years.

Alcohol is bad, but smoking is worse. Smoking is both way more addictive and it is a bigger health risk. It's rare to be a moderate smoker, generally you either don't smoke at all, or if you do you are a smoker, with numerous health risks. With alcohol moderate use is the norm, and only excessive use will make you an alcoholic, resulting in numerous health risks. AFAIK it has only lately become known that even moderate alcohol use is still a health risk. AFAIK mostly causing intestine cancer. So instead we have campaigns warning against drinking to much, which was also how it started with cigarettes.

Absolutely correct, we don't want a competition based on social dumping or highest subsidies. That's why you make tariffs to compensate for that like the EU does, but EU has higher standards than USA, and is hit by tariffs in USA anyway, and although China has state subsidies, the 150% tariff doesn't make the competition fair, it simply excludes any car made in China from being sold in USA.

BYD tried to build buses in Ontario but they were so shit they had to close the plant and pay a bunch of lawsuits.

Wow interesting I didn't know that, I've heard that China has too many car makers, and some of them would have to go. So this is probably just the beginning of an adjustment for Chinese makers.

You are 100% correct that this is the general idea, the problem is that USA actually had a head start with Tesla, (as painful as it is to me to admit.) Now the lack of competition will only result in the loss of the lead USA had until just a few years ago. Of course Nazi Musk and Nazi Trump undermine American exports, and no amount of US tariffs can compensate for that.

It takes time to scale up production, CATL is already building factories for it:

>I believe there are some issues for people with mental health concerns due to the reward pathway fuckery, It appears that people with mental health issues have way more problems to quit smoking than people on average. The burning of tobacco makes the nicotine combine with other compounds in the tobacco to form MAO inhibitor effect. Which people with mental problems become way more dependent on than other people. For these people e-cigs have been shown to help a lot, despite they don't have the MAO effect, they help by limiting the abstinence of not smoking by providing nicotine, and probably by providing a reasonably strong placebo effect from "feeling" like smoking in many ways. For some people with mental problems, smoking can often be seen as an attempt of self treatment.

I don't see why not, the problem is probably more to make it profitable, as the product would have to compete in a market of cheap palm oil from developing countries. In greenhouses with artificial light, you can create whatever conditions you want, including a subtropical climate.

Excellent point, compared to lard it's probably more like 30 times more efficient in the amount of farmland needed. The problem is not palm oil, the real problem is that the global population has increased from 5 to 8 billion in 50 years. Without palm oil, deforestation would probably have been worse.

Modern batteries are way way better than they used to be, even alkaline is better and were quite expensive in the 90's. But it's not only how much better they are, it's the prices, alkaline is standard today, and you barely even look at the price, because they are dirt cheap. But you are right that in electronics there have been much improvements, a modern flashlight is easily a 100 times better because of both LED and better batteries. LED improved it probably by a factor of about 10. But for many things like a laptop, the power consumption hasn't gone down that much, because the better batteries have actually made it possible to make more powerful laptops instead. the power consumption of a modest laptop CPU alone id 65 Watt, which would be HUGE in the 80's. I agree the 99% sounds like much, but I can attest to at least 80% probably more like 90% better batteries than the early 90's. Lithium batteries really was a game-changer, especially if you consider only rechargeable batteries.

OK for me the 80's are way later, because the two were a threshold between two eras. So to me 78 is way way later than 82. In the sense that that was the time things began to turn to shit politically. We actually had a very popular song here in Denmark, about how buying a walk man made things sound like new your man. Back then USA was kind of both cool but also something that we shouldn't strive to copy. The problem is that I had zero interest in anything like a walk man. My interest was in big high power HiFi.

What? Why didn’t they do that a decade ago? DSLR is freaking useless with a digital camera. But apparently other brands still have them too? But why use DSLR when you can get a more exact image representation from the sensor? Seems like it’s based more on tradition than actual usefulness. Of course if you make an old retro film camera, the system is still useful. But my guess is that is a very small niche market. It’s inferior in every way and more expensive and time consuming.

But Beijing, including Chinese leader Xi Jinping himself, has also spoken about the risks posed by AI. China must “balance development and security”, and introduce and improve relevant laws and ethical guidelines, and strengthen prevention of risks, to “safeguard the interests of the people and national security”, state security minister Chen Yixin wrote on Sunday. This is true I’ve read articles about how the Chinese government is working on legal models to make AI “safe for children”. It’s ironic in these times of asymmetric warfare beating traditional war machinery at a fraction of the price. It’s kind of the same the Chinese is doing on AI. USA is building huge datacenters concentrated around the forecasts for less than a handful of AI companies. While China is building AI into everything, and are working on making AI work decentralized to be useful in way more task specific circumstances and way cheaper. Maybe the 2 can coexist? But I think the American approach is overkill, and a lot of people will lose a lot of money they invested in that shit. So I don’t think the competition from China is designed to be malicious or disruptive, it has grown out from a different set of circumstances and necessity, because USA has been denying China the necessary chips to perform well with the American approach. Making it near impossible for China to work with American companies especially suppliers. Which China did until American politicians ruined it. China is building AI for everybody to use everywhere. While USA is attempting to monopolize AI services within monolithic services controlled by a few gigantic companies. I think safety is also easier to implement with the Chinese model, that doesn’t attempt to create AGI or Strong AI as we used to call it. But is creating AI that works well for what it was designed for.

Diplomatically, Canada is at a greater disadvantage than other countries. WTF propaganda do you get your info from? Canada is one of the strongest most independent countries in the world, because they are well respected basically everywhere. And they have made multiple big trade agreements, that make them stronger yet. This is probably the most uninformed post I’ve ever seen here on Lemmy! And I’m a daily user for more than 3 years. It really puzzles me how anyone can be this misinformed, without being a troll?
