@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk You would think that this would put paid to the lie "We have to pay the top salaries / bonuses in order to attract the top talent" ... but I guess we're just seeing these things differently. We assume that "the top talent" would be interested in: reducing customer fees, remediating issues with infrastructure, improving the salaries of it's workers and increasing investment to meet demand... but the "top talent" is only actually interested in: avoiding nationalisation and increasing shareholder compensation. It's time that the lies of "market competition" and "private industry efficiencies" were put to rest, renationalise the industries that were sold off during the 80's / 90's and actually give the average person something less to worry about.

Have to admit... I do not understand why Valve are running the #steammachine hardware sales the way they are. It makes little sense. I'm currently on a "waitlist" ... meaning they have allocated me a device from the first (only?) batch of production and I just need to wait for an e-mail from them to be able to confirm that I want it and I will pay for it. I must do so within three days of receiving the email, or they will sell 'my' device to someone else. But why? Why not send me a mail now, take my payment and then tell me that it will ship in August, or September? Or whenever. Why do I need to wait for the e-mail? I have no idea when that mail will arrive, and as folks on the Steam forums have said, what if I'm away on holiday? What if I have no cell coverage? Perhaps I'm scheduled for surgery and need to spend a couple of days in hospital? Perhaps I just don't like checking e-mail as these days it feels like work trying to avoid the scammers and hard-sell mails from everyone you've ever bought something from ("Please leave a review" mails from companies that you interacted with via a webpage for six seconds can get in the sea). So come on Valve, I'm in. I'm sold. I want one and I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford one, I have a need for a device in my living room so I can get out of the home-office that I spend 9 hours a day working in. Just sell me the damn thing already.

Our council flipped to reform last time around and they were campaigning on their usual lies of "lower taxes" ... well, new council tax bills came out and to absolutely no one's surprise, the reform council has put our council tax up by the maximum allowed. And the thick sods are probably still celebrating.

Personally, I'd suggest either Ubuntu or Fedora ... you'll likely have a simpler time.

@bryceac@mastodon.world Much better graphics performance, more flexible from a RAM allocation perspective and available now with next day shipping. I'm looking at the HP Zbook Ultra g1a, which has a terrible name but seems to get rave reviews especially by folks running Linux. Pricing is reasonable imo, considering the benefits and compared to something like a MacBook Pro it almost seems cheap.

@laumapret@toot.lv @apenwarr.ca I believe that if you have your own IdP then you can use that... but I've created a Tailnet and signed in with an Apple account, seemed the least-evil option (YMMV). There are options for self-hosting the control node (see: Headscale) yourself if you prefer having all the control locally... or I am told that NetBird is a similar piece of tech with fewer technical requirements, but perhaps also fewer features.

This (the uncertainty of 1 or 2 sticks) was stated during an interview with Gamers Nexus but then Valve issued a statement to Gamers Nexus saying that all devices in this batch would actually all have a single 16GB stick.

Shame, it's a small site and parking can be a nightmare... only made worse by the recent houses built there I imagine (just hope that they're local residents and not just holiday lets)... so I'm not suprised the fees came in, though they are pricey so I worry that it's only going to be wealthier visitors that can stop by. Staveley is a lovely village.

GN tested the stock config against a device with two sticks of RAM and found that the main improvement was seen in tasks like file compression and decompression, indicating that you'd perhaps see an up-to 20% performance improvement during these tasks. They speculated that it would possibly improve performance during game installs but they actually found low single-digit improvements in pretty much all other scenarios (gaming etc).

I bought a 14 year old car two years ago... I was looking for a specific car from a specific time (it's a Suzuki Grand Vitara, so not exactly a 250GTO) and I never bothered to cancel the autotrader alerts. I'm still getting them. The cars it is showing me now, are higher mileage than the one I bought, and are more expensive ... so my 16 year old granddad car is appreciating in value. What the actual ... ? Side note: Back in the 2000's I drove a 2004 Jeep Cherokee (the ugly one) and it remains one of the best cars I ever owned ... that car, at that age, sells for more now than I got for it at trade in back then. I'm not entirely sure why I'm posting this, I think it's my age.

I placed a pre order for the #framework 13 pro and was quick enough to get into Batch 1. That device is now about to ship. The 32Gb of RAM was priced at £439 (!!) ... but since then, the price has now increased to £800. For just the RAM. This is just insane. Given I bought 32Gb DRR4 in 2025 for £55 ... if you're thinking of a computer purchase, do it now.

I appreciate that they have a page of "successful campaigns" but a lot of them appear to be claiming victory when it appears the other side just changed their mind and decided to do something else instead. (I really doubt a campaign with 174 signatures led to meaningful change). I think the government is well aware that the ease of signing an online petition makes it worthless. Even the parliamentary ones. There is a way to show government how much you care about a cause and that is physical protest. The Suffragettes, the Kinder Tresspass, the Miners Strikes, and so on. 38degrees seems like a great idea but honestly, at this point it feels like it's part of the problem. Complete a few petitions and they have built a database of U.K. citizens with a set of grievances... I can imagine it being relatively easy for the police to get a court order to seize that database and you've just done their job for them.

Personally, I'm a Fedora KDE convert. I've run Linux Mint (which is confusingly based on Ubuntu, which is based on Debian), Arch Linux and I mainly use Debian for servers... but my desktop and laptops have been on Fedora for a couple of years now and I've been enjoying it. Lots of updates, support from a lot of vendors (as it's compatible with RedHat Linux, which is a corporate favourite) so things tend to work quickly and work well.

Look at the satellite photos of any shopping centre or event space and you'll like see that the place itself is dwarfed by the parking structures. Even if we look at residential areas, pretty much every street you drive down now is littered with cars parked on the public highway ... Perhaps we need the Japanese "kei car" laws?
