@peterbrown @babe Classic cars are museum pieces - increasingly as technology leaves them behind - and it is good that some people are prepared to put in the effort to preserve them. I don’t know if I’d put it quite that way. Technology leaves behind modern cars much, much more rapidly than old cars. Getting controller parts for a ten year old car depends heavily on the popularity of that car. Getting controller parts for a 45 year old car, like mine, is meaningless because the car has no controllers, aside from an analog glow plug controller, which I can diagnose and fix if it ever has trouble. My car is 100% obsolescence proof when it comes to anything related to technology. Newer cars simply aren’t.

@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org @jperkin@federate.me.uk If you don’t mind a recommendation for next time, a little extra information in the PR would be helpful. I have an idea about what you mean from this thread, but reading that without knowing about this thread would leave me a bit confused. For instance, pasting an example or two of the messages you got would be good. I’m not a fan of Fastly. Sometimes we have issues like these, and sometimes fetching just hangs forever. Some source repositories use Fastly, which means I can’t leave bulk building machines to run without occasional hangups, so they need timeouts. Also, I can’t report issues to Fastly as an end user, and upstream doesn’t often care enough to report issues. It’s a real PITA.

Alpha will be back soon, I hope, as I’ll be heading to the coast where my AlphaServer DS25 lives. The SuperH build machine might have a failing disk, and if that’s the case, that’ll be replaced during that trip. The Cobalt RAQ2 used to build mipsel binary packages has had its power supply replaced, and so far it has been compiling for several days without issues. I hope this makes it happy. I haven’t quite figured out the issue with the Ubiquiti Edgerouter ERLite. It could be the SSD. That’s in the queue to test. NetBSD-11 PowerPC binaries are being built in a chroot on a Nintendo Wii U. Because NetBSD 11 doesn’t know about the SMP issues on the Wii U, it’s running with just -j 1, but the speed is still excellent. Having 2 gigs of memory certainly helps.

@furicle @babe @peterbrown That’s what part cross referencing is for. Luckily, my car doesn’t have a pitman arm, and the ball joints are used on lots of other kinds of cars. The one thing I can’t fix is the rust - I might need a new body for my drivetrain. But even if I get something much newer, the engine will remain 100% mechanical.

@cwebber@social.coop This reminds me of Google’s marketing around how the then world record Pi calculation can be done on Google Cloud. They completely failed to mention how much it’d cost. Someone did an estimate based on then current prices, and I estimated I could buy an over-specced Epyc server, stay with it at a fancy hotel for the whole time it’d take to run the calculation, and pay myself $20k, and it’d still be cheaper than Google Cloud. And I could keep the Epyc. I’d love to know how much work like this would cost if paid for by a customer.

@pino@social.cologne @eldritch48@mastodon.social @jschauma@mstdn.social Not liking your comparison doesn’t mean that anyone is necessarily fine with F***book. Those are two separate and totally unrelated things.

The general acceptance of “AI” and the general acceptance of F***book as the new AOL have plenty in common. It most certainly was a topic, and still is. None of the people I know here on the fediverse thought or think it was OK.

And I wholeheartedly don’t agree that it’s “less annoying” - whereas Fbook tried to force as many people as possible to use their bull, “AI” is being foisted on us by pretty much every megacorp out there at the same time. It’s super annoying, and it’s even more destructive than Fbook.

@StaceyCornelius@zeroes.ca I’ve worked on many older MacBooks. You need some special screwdrivers, but the kits of them aren’t all that expensive, plus they’re useful for other small electronics. Depending on your model, I might even have extra parts, although if you’re replacing the keyboard, it’s a bit of work with a ton of tiny screws. The headphone jack is soldered on, IIRC, but it could just need a good cleaning / dust removal, or fixing of a solder joint. ifixit.com has guides for all the models of MacBook.
