For the masses, not the classes.

Born tired. Likes bikes and hikes. Sometimes I work on OSS, other times robots. I remember when computers were good. He/him.

Did you alt text your image? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

Profile photo: Middle-aged white guy with scruffy sandy brown hair and beard.

Background photo: Two dogs, a mid-sized red potato type dog and a large black and white muppet, on a riverbank, about to drop an indie rock album with mandolins or some shit.

Then y'all watched Waterworld? I STILL love that movie. Genuinely, unironically, one of my favorites. Dennis Hopper is so funny. Actually, it's a very funny movie and I don't think it gets enough credit for that. Everybody says, "it's just Mad Max on water", and I'm like, "I know, how cool is that!?" #Monsterdon

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social that man was going to do something stupid, regardless. You can't be in that situation, working with partners who will make you a gazillion dollars every year for an indeterminate period of time as long as you keep them happy, and think, "How can I fuck these people over in such an inexcusable fashion that they will never work with me again and probably no one else will, either?" and be at all smart.

Is Asesprite really all there is for editing pixel art? I can't read any of this. This is a nightmare for accessibility. This typeface and these icons are an insult to anyone without good vision (me, I'm the one without good vision, I just can't use this). 200% is still hard to read, 300% doesn't fit on the screen. A decent fucking font would be readable at this size.

@ayl@mastodon.social @glc@mastodon.online @simonzerafa@infosec.exchange @gabrielesvelto@mas.to that's why Elon Musk rushed the SpaceX IPO and why it is being fast-tracked into the Russell and Nasdaq indexes, so the people left holding the bag are working class folks in the form of their retirement accounts. It's an unprecedented transfer of wealth from the working class to a handful of billionaires.

@daihard@sharkey.world bike infrastructure costs so little and returns so much, it is ridiculous it's such a struggle to get it. Every traffic problem is answered with more/faster/wider car lanes, with no thought to simply reducing the number of cars on the road.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange I use LLMs (kind of a work requirement at this point, but I use them for some of my OSS stuff, too, particularly for security audits), but I won't accept PRs made by LLMs. If I'm going to be reviewing LLM-generated code, which is verbose, often lacks a sense of intention, and is just generally hard to read, I'd rather drive the LLM myself. I don't want someone else's slop, I want my own. At least I know what I find most annoying about them and can make it behave better. So, if someone with no experience in the codebase can implement something with an LLM, then I can pretty much always implement it with an LLM and review that implementation faster than I could review the PR from a stranger, so I just don't want the PR from the stranger. They can make a feature request. Which, as you note, basically chops off the junior dev pipeline, and that seems bad.

@matt@toot.cafe @Migueldeicaza@mastodon.social @glyph@mastodon.social a 4-bit quantization is 400-500GB on disk, so, you'd need almost a TB of VRAM to run it with a huge context and KV cache, like you'd get when you buy tokens from Z.ai. 1-bit quantization is 228GB on disk, so a 512GB Mac Studio could run it slowly (maybe even a two or three bit quant with smallish context). So, realistically, I don't think most normal folks will self-host GLM 5.2. But, companies might. ASUS just announced a ~$115,000 748GB AI inference machine, which could maybe run the 4-bit with maybe 200k context. A company that cares about privacy might consider that a price worth paying. When memory supply catches up with demand (or OpenAI stops buying all the supply years out into the future), building a monster like that will come back down to earth. You probably could have built something like that 2 years ago for $50,000, which is a no-brainer for a major corporation that doesn't want their data to ever leave their data centers.

@bryan@dusty.ninja the thing is, I always hated Photoshop and used to like GIMP OK. I didn't like Photoshop because of the cost (though I did buy Adobe Creative Suite way back for compatibility with designers and clients) but also because I had to reboot into Windows to use it and that sucked. But, it really feels like everything in GIMP has changed, and for the worse. Like, it's just really complicated and confusing now in ways I don't remember it being...at least 20 years ago, when I used to spend a lot of time poking around in bitmap graphics. All my web graphic work moved to Inkscape at least that long ago, so it's entirely possible I've just forgotten everything about the GIMP, but it feels intentionally obtuse and mysterious. Now I think I know how my dad felt when Autodesk stopped shipping AutoCAD for DOS. Nothing's where I want it to be and nothing acts like I expect.

Gnome Boxes is so stubbornly wrong-headed. There's a patch to fix this scaling issue in their issue tracker, it's been there for like a year, and they're still shipping this mess and I have to rebuild every time a new version arrives. Also, VMs default to shutting down when you go back to the main page, no way to make that not the default. Who TF wants their VM to pause if you open another VM?

@bruces@mastodon.social I've been using Opus to look at an OSS project I work on (something like a couple million lines of code, almost three decades old), and it's finding a large number of issues. At least half the stuff it finds is legitimately a security issue, but quite low-grade issues. Stuff that would require some kind of elevated access to already exist to take advantage of it. We'll fix them, because it's noise for future scans with LLMs, but it's not something we're urgently rushing out to users.

@techokami@woof.tech I don't mind using old software, but I do mind using Windows software. I'm on Linux, and while Wine can run pretty much everything these days, it's a pain in the ass, especially on a HiDPI display. Wine apps show up tiny, and I'm sure there's some way to make them scale 2x or 4x or whatever is necessary, I prefer something native.

@bruces@mastodon.social I imagine it's similar for Firefox. Though, also, in our case it found a legitimately serious privilege escalation bug that we treated with more urgency. I'm sure Firefox also has some serious issues lurking in all those millions of lines of decades old code. A browser is huge, loads of code for bugs to hide in.

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social I'm noticing I'm far more suspicious of stuff from people I don't know (even if only in passing from social media or whatever). Which means I'm less likely to share something from somebody I don't know if I'm not confident it is real (by some definition of "real", whatever that may mean to me on that day). That feels like a bad thing. New artists probably need the attention more.

@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer I can't find explanation of what that chart is in the the text, so I'm not actually sure what it represents. "Serving Nearly 1,500 Open Source Project Communities" makes me think "giving some kind of support to" rather than "receiving some kind of support from". And "Communities" aint got money. I assumed the big "Project Support" category was what the "Serving" chart applied to. So, is it misleadingly labeled? Am I missing somewhere in the text the chart is explained?

@bruces@mastodon.social also, this is kind of a shitty situation for everyone, especially open source project maintainers, to be in. Suddenly there's a tool that will find security bugs far faster than a human can, but not exactly precise...so there are false positives. But, you can't know it's a false positive without reading the code. Often in code that hasn't been touched in years. It's a huge pile of busy work that is kind of urgent. In popular software, people are always looking for exploits.

@troed@swecyb.com yes, I saw that, but I assumed the big "Project Support" item broke down into segments in the other chart. But, I guess not? The text does not explain what "Serving Nearly 1,500 Open Source Project Communities" means. And $182 million dollars generically summed up as "Project Support" isn't very informative. But, also, the text does mention several Hyperledger projects (which is blockchain), so...I dunno?

@stiiin@infosec.space @neverpanic@chaos.social @julsboo@mamot.fr no, cryptocurrency is good for crime. It's true you can trace where the money goes in terms of addresses, but law enforcement is only rarely able to identify the person who owns the address. And, they're often operating in places with no extradition treaty or cooperative government. No banks, no know your customer laws.

I thought maybe I'd find it more comfortable than Asesprite since I used to use it so much, but it doesn't feel familiar at all. Maybe I can make sense of Krita?

Back when I was handling merch I usually used a Gildan fashion fit 100% cotton, maybe it was model 65000? They looked/felt nice and held up well (I still have a few 15+ years later), lots of colors, but I can't vouch for them now. Not super cheap, but not as expensive as some.
