some good stuff signal.org has been doing that you've likely missed because people love to be doomers about signal on fedi: signal working on registration without phone number signal-desktop will be usable without a phone signal can now be linked on android tablets phones can now be secondary/linked devices cross-device, end-to-end-encrypted backups

grumpiness about fluxer
@star@fed.amazonawaws.com yeah the best way I've found to actually get a reply on the topic is to go in the federation channel on fluxer itself. unfortunately last time I wanted to like ~a day ago their entire fluxerstatic.com was fucked due to CORS issues so the client couldn't be loaded lmfao

things I've been working on in regards to botanica

  • SSH over Yggdrasil, with simple one-command setup

Thanks to yggdrasil making it really easy to generate a new config, I've included a little script that

  1. Generates a config (including a new key)
  2. Sets up peers and listen directives
  3. Restarts yggdrasil to apply changes
  4. Prints out your IP Address

You can run this at any time to reset your IP.

I'll also make sure that password logins for SSH are disabled, and I'll see if I can do the same for Cockpit, so that to login you must use the cockpit "desktop" application which uses SSH under the hood. Last thing to do is make sure logins are still possible on LAN with a password, but not over yggdrasil, and guiding the user to adding through adding their key.

  • further work on figuring out proxying

the biggest issue with botanica is networking. I don't want to rely on Cloudflare, or on the end-user already having a VPS that Caddy could be installed on. Yet, I still want to have some kind of solution for people to make their servers accessible on the web with minimal effort.

At this point in time, I don't see a way around providing some kind of public proxying service, but that's difficult as I could not end-to-end-encrypt that in a way which would keep us safe. It's a Tor Exit Node situation.

@resucutie@plasmatrap.com The argument against that approach is that KDE, as a project, should not condone the use of tools that by Amnesty International have several human rights issues that directly go against the goals of sub-projects like KDE Eco as well as the wishes to set an example by many members in the KDE Community.

@star@fed.amazonawaws.com though with that in mind, there's plenty projects much bigger than us that are doing just fine with a third-party forge, while there's some initial friction the real-world drawbacks aren't that enormous in practice, not in my experience and seemingly not in continuwuity's experience either* *: which I want to take for comparison here as they're also in the federated instant-messaging space and have their own forge as well as mirrors

hi everyone!! I'll put a bit into this from TSN funds (getting them out of XMR right now), but if any of you could help it'd be mighty appreciated!! Nelson is a big part of the Starlight Network and we wouldn't be here today without him, so I really wanna help him get hardware that he can actually work with again ty <3 RE: shrimp.starlightnet.work/notes/ardi5tbvhrm22cjp

I truly, truly did not want to make this post, in fact I did so in the past and retired it, because I truly do not like asking for money. Not really out of my own ego but because I would rather work for it. Sadly, commission money just wasn't enough and it was a lot of work for me to keep up with all the stuff. What I need help with is... to get a new laptop. My main computer had technical difficulties so extreme that it has been made unusable, I'm currently falling-back to my old laptop which is okay enough for doing basic tasks but it's a huge impedance against me getting stuff done proper with all the stuff we're developing for the future of TSN and my own personal projects, and I need around 300 dollars to get myself a second hand laptop that will be better or at least on-par with my old main device. Again, I'm not the kind to be comfortable to ask for money and to take from this wonderful and sacred pool of human generosity and love, so I really want to give you something awesome in return, and it's something we've been working on for a while for the future of TSN, and I really hope y'all love it once it's finished. Thanks for being here, if you cannot donate, you can still help me with a boost. Edit: Oh my god, I cannot believe I accidentally put on the wrong URL for Paypal. Fixed! ko-fi: ko-fi.com/darltrash paypal: paypal.me/darltrash

@tisba@ruby.social I don't think they meant monetary cost, moreso a figurative kind of "cost". Like "switching costs", those aren't monetary but there's a real cost there. Something more akin to that.

I want to set up a website calling for KDE to adopt a No-AI policy. Not because I want them to be Anti-AI, but because I want them to be uncompromisingly Pro-People. EDIT: the bones of a site about this are now at codeberg.org/cyrneko/kde-for-people ; Domain name and exact text to be published is still undecided but I shall continue there EDIT 2: Please see the announcement post for KDE For People: shrimp.starlightnet.work/notes/arffamjzga6fa2nb

Generative AI Action, KDE for People
Hello! This is the launch of KDE For People. I and others are calling for KDE to adopt a No-AI policy for KDE Plasma and Plasma Components. There has long been discussions in various parts of KDE, but recently there was a proposal to allow the use of Generative AI in KDE Plasma. We oppose this policy and invite you to show support of a ban on Generative AI in Plasma on the basis of a Pro-People outlook on KDE's future. kdeforpeople.com

@resucutie@plasmatrap.com For me personally, still no, but that is not the position this project takes per-se. IF such a model comes to exist, one MIGHT consider amending or changing the policy. I consider it unlikely considering the various human rights abuses that are baked into the creation of models currently, though.

@halva@mk.absturztau.be I think you missed the point of why I made this the issue I have with the policy and discussion is about how for months now people have asked for a principled stance, e.g that of Zig, which doesn't at all care about the writing code part because its philosophy originates in teaching, community building and gaining a deep understanding of the codebase instead of determining the % of outputs that are or aren't AI when these things were brought up, or the numerous human rights abuses, not only were the arguments shot down but tons of evidence quite literally denied its legitimacy despite the hundreds of sources backing it up I don't think that is okay
