A new social me.
How the Fediverse has influenced the way I live my (online) social life now. Especially when you come from Instagram.

The new German #socialmedia platform wedium started it's beta access this week. It sees itself as an European alternative to the big tech social media platforms, specifically since the Trump administration took over last year, and stands against hate speech.
To secure that, you have to identify with your passport.
Ah, and they are closed source.
Why not federate? Because Trump used Mastodon's code for Truth Social.
So it's a walled-garden with ID check.
What a joke.
#NASA released an image generator (non-ai) where you can insert your name and it will display as #Landsat images from around the world.

@GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social Fascism is not about politics. It's about denying fundamental human rights. Your statement is just a very good demonstration that being "unpolitical" actually means tolerating hate and prosecution of minorities which makes you part of the rise of authoritarianism.
Turns out flying to to moon is not very different from every day life. You have problems with Outlook, you have plumber issues, you are not sure about your PC's folder structure and where to put things, you speak about putting out the trash and you say good night a hundred times.
Instagram now shows a forced ad break - when you didn't allow the usage of your personal data for personalised ads.
What a great next level of enshittification. And what a wonderfull trigger to just close this app.
I makes me really feel all fuzzy and cosy when I think of the experiences I have here in the fediverse with Mastodon and Pixelfed.
Got featured by the European Elopement Guide today. 🥰
And got booked for a wonderful elopement in Norway later the year, which really made my week.

@lenzgr@mastodon.social Happy it resonates! Connecting here is so wonderful as this place is full of great people. I still sometimes wish my business would be less social media dependent. But I work on that.
The true reasons Mastodon implemented #collections

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social I have to say I love it when you do this, but I'm sorry that you have to.
I just installed the best streaming service on my TV. No Ads, only my favourite movies and series, and no monthly fees!
Big shout out to the Jellyfin2Samsung project for providing a one-click solution to install @jellyfin@mastodon.online on my "old" TV.
Apparently a TV from 2022 is already too old to get software updates. Thank you Samsung ...

Cal.com is closing it's source due to the threat coming with AI coding:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYEPLpgCRck
I don't know how I feel about that. It was always my favourite go-to alternative to Calendly.
What I also don't get is that they are releasing a Cal.diy source code side by side with less business features. Is that not threatened by AI?
Or is it just a business move to earn more money in the end?
Replying to
@Em0nM4stodon Oh, so sorry. I’ve always enjoyed following your work on Privacy Guides, and I’m happy I’m not the only one! You’re one of those people I would hire for my “cool people to build some great ethical stuff with” company.
Looking forward to your next journey and I'm happy to follow you here.

@ryanleesipes I saw his video and had doubts. How can AI force them to close the source and in the same take they release the source code for the community but without the premium business features. No AI threat there?!?
It really feels like they just created a story to create more revenue.
Too sad, I really enjoyed Cal.com as a Calendly alternative.

@dansup@mastodon.social is that included in the early access I purchased with the kickstarter last year?

Ok, I'm confused. What are your concerns exactly about E2EE in the fediverse? Is it added complexity for server admins?
As an user living through this period of the internet I barely see a reason why I wouldn't want E2EE for anything with direct personal communication. In fact I choose services exactly for that.
Shouldn't good E2EE be able to operate securely especially under hostile conditions? And is that not the point of open standards to do so?

@lauryssendirk @katap Same. I don't get Darktable. I'm using professional photo editors since 2 decades now, but I'm having a hard time figuring out wtf Darktable actually wants from me.
I'm also digging into Affinitiy right now, especially as they are publicly thinking about Linux support.
Would be more than happy to ditch Adobe.
Replying to
@lauryssendirk Thank you!
I work with Adobe Lightroom, like 98% of the industry unfortuntely. The rest uses CaptureOne, so also not better. Cost of change are high, because it's not just switching editing, but the whole workflow around it.
I regularly check FOSS editors, but yeah, switching is not easy as it's a work tool I heavily use. I recently looked into www.getrapidraw.com and it looks really promising.
@katap recently compared different editors on the same image. Very interesting!

@Pixelix fixed now. thought I uninstalled it but just saw that it gave an error. reinstall fixed it!

@fringemagnet you phrased it perfectly.
It's not about "un-shittifying" social media. They see a market opportunity and want to make money by deliberately portraying Mastodon as something that fascists use.
Also Trump's Truth Social happened waaaay before their wedium idea was born. This whole section about why they don't federate is just a big lie and can only mean they see Mastodon as a true competitor in their market.
Replying to
@ewen It only sideloads the JellyFin app to the TV.
But I'm also curious if there is a custom ROM for TVs 👀

@gabrielmarkley@techhub.social Thank you so much! I'm happy that social media has become and "add-on" again instead of the "purpose" for my photography business. Going to write some more things about the business side in the future.

@alexraffa@mastodon.uno ethical data abusers! 😄
They sell ad space but proclaim to sell it to more ethical companies (or campaigns). The thing is that they have your identity. And even though they state in their own FAQ that trusting is not enough and that they want at some point form a foundation, everything is closed source and you have to ... trust them.
@Pixelix@mastodon.social Any insights on why the app is not working anymore and how to fix it? I get API errors ("unauthenticated") when being locked in and can't even re-login
3 good things:
- Cool night and morning here
- Fiber will finally be connected next week

And lucky us that the Fediverse / servers are normally too small for regulations like ID check.

if I may drop my 2 cents here: I find Matrix approach very transparent and reminding. They permanently display the "unlocked" icon with an info text in the input field that this message is unencrypted.
