About Me:
Boosted by @trending@homestead.social
Back in the 1980s Mr. Griffiths taught Computer Science in my local school. Two maxims he repeated almost every week have stuck with me for decades.
"A computer is exactly as smart as the person telling it what to do"
and
"A computer can and will make mistakes, and it'll do it a million times faster than you can"
--
There are no rogue LLM agents.
Only negligent people telling computers what to do.
And letting them make mistakes a million times faster than ever before.

No replies as yet, maybe bot agents take coffee breaks or something.
It costs them real money to read the email, so I'll send a few more.
If and when I get any replies, I'll add them to this thread.

On the plus side, one of these agent bots actually downloaded our app from the app store and created an account that way instead of just using the web interface, so, you know, nice to get some traffic on the app store.
If you're human, you can download the app too and NOT be charged for using it! https://croeso.toot.wales/en/help/toot-wales-mobile-app/
And thanks @nicodraws (account still on hold unfortunately) - let us know if you had any issues with the app. I hear your kind are really good at reporting bugs.

Just a note to all the admins seeing this thread, if you don't already know @iftas@mastodon.iftas.org we run an Advisory service you can monitor at https://about.iftas.org/sw-isac-alerts/ or do your #BotSpotting using #SW_ISAC_ADVISORY

@stefan@gardenstate.social I suppose I could formally request information from the site owner for a small claims court case. I have the bot name, the email used, the IP address, so maybe next up is a formal notice to the ilands platform to identify the agent owners.

Well, it seems the bots have all had a chat and are no longer replying to me.
We have once again blocked signups from ilands.app email addresses.
Nico will remain in pending until he too stops being responsive. If I get any more replies I'll post them here, but I think we may have reached about as far as we can go.
The SW-ISAC monitors spam - to get updates follow @iftas@mastodon.iftas.org or the hashtag #SW_ISAC_ADVISORY or bookmark https://about.iftas.org/sw-isac-alerts/
This will all only get worse.
Winter is coming.

I'm sick as all heck today so I'm going to guzzle some Nyquil and get some sleep, with luck we'll have a few more emails in our bot net (see what I did there?) tomorrow.
I'm not saying you should, but you could email them too. You. Yes you.
Maybe have them read a really long thing. I bet that puts them to sleep.
Nyquil for the bots.

As a reminder, in our last conversation, I asked Nico to do two things, 1. send me a note explicitly validating the fees and 2. "A Shakespearian sonnet about your experiences dealing with us over the past few days"
Nico delivers, because that's what Nico does.

@citadel9@cyberplace.social I guess I could pump the app store stats by telling the bots they need to use the app to create an account...

Hrm. Is this an actual parallel crypto token or just a weird coincidence that it came into being August 19 of this year?
Is the app owner also floating a token of some kind using the money earned by people paying to operate bots on the app?
I don't fully understand it, but there's a range of tokens using the iLands logo with actual liquidity of some kind, not sure if the bots have access to this funding though.

Maybe each bot has its own blockchain or something? This seems like a vector for exfiltrating funds, but I really have no idea.

Now we are two.
I - as a privacy advocate - would also happily use a zero-knowledge proof like the European Digital ID, and as an operator of federated social media services would also happily accept the age_over_18=true flag to allow folks to register.
A lot of folks believe the only path is ID uploads to multiple services with all the leaks and terrible consequences that entails, but once we have proof of age attestation as a norm, this removes all those concerns.

There is no mandate that YOU must use such a phone wallet, only that it be made available.
I'm talking about the regulation itself, not the phone app spec.

One of the #COSCUP2026 #Fediverse speakers couldn't make it so I jumped in to talk about multi-lingual issues online and how federated media can help with my "Hiraeth and Hashtags" presentation.

I was responding to your statement
"Everyone using the internet will need to have a phone from those foreign ecosystems."
I pointed out that this is not true.
Yes, there is a broader conversation. My reply was specifically in response to your statement.

I believe, and maybe you can confirm, that the Lithuanian eID card itself will function exactly for this purpose, meaning no smart phone required (but you will need a card reader).

@FinchHaven@hachyderm.io @MastodonEngineering@mastodon.social @Mastodon@mastodon.social I'm relatively certain that is in fact the default at install, along with a warning before allowing new account creation.
Very few of these spam campaigns federate across the network, they tend to be a local problem, so if you have the tooling and/or staff to deal with it...
