@librarymonster@glammr.us @overholt@glammr.us seems implicit given everything we’ve seen with AI and layoffs and everything else. “A physical being is a delivery mechanism for skilled labor. Once those skills have been extracted and encoded into an AI model, the delivery mechanism has served its purpose. What remains is blood, bone, and binding material. The being is not destroyed. Its value has migrated. The being returns to the material cycle; the skills enter the production one.”

@renardboy@mastodon.social @thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io this is what I keep wondering. Best I can figure is we release the carbon to get energy in one place then use energy to store it in another place. I am not a scientist. I just don’t understand how it actually balances out except at a superficial level.

@danbrotherston @Daojoan that’s how I feel about it, but most passive income seems exploitative, whether you’re tricking people into buying a product that they don’t need and/or exploiting cheap labor to build/maintain the product.

@jmcrookston@mastodon.social the studies mentioned in the article begin in the 1940’s and indicates a mixup involving old mining studies and some TB studies. One of the people involved tried to correct the 5 micron value by the 80’s but the community had run with the idea and it wasn’t rediscovered until an aerosol scientist at Virginia tech went digging in 2020 to figure out when the “5 micron” value was first mentioned and tried to warn the WHO. https://readwise.io/reader/shared/01gqbgawqd9ev1gpm2qkrpd24z/

The 60-Year-Old Scientific Screwup That Helped Covid Kill | annotated by Nicole

All pandemic long, scientists brawled over how the virus spreads. Droplets! No, aerosols! At the heart of the fight was a teensy error with huge consequences.

@pathfinder @autistics for me personally it often comes down to expectations. Because if I agree to help in the future, and when the time comes I’m barely hanging on, then I face the nearly impossible choice to likely go over the edge if I do follow through, but being unable to back out. And usually I look perfectly fine even when I’m right on the edge, so others won’t understand it. It works the same way if I accept help. I feel an obligation to return it. Or, if I offer help on something that is a recurring task, then I feel an obligation to keep doing it (even if I only offered help the one time). I really hate that this is the way it works for me. A lot of it also comes down to my baseline levels of stress. The more I have to drive, the higher they will be. The more I’m around people, the higher it will be.

@mvl87@mastodon.social @JPummil@genomic.social the base of your argument here seems to be the fundamentally the same as the one @QasimRashid@mastodon.social is arguing against - that if unrealized gains aren’t actual gains that can be taxed, then why can they be used to take loans? Because, in this case, how has Musk “created” these jobs? The employees justify them by performing them. The jobs would still exist if Musk is replaced as CEO. The only way they go away is if Musk thinks the companies can still make him money without the employees or if he has a hissy fit and throws them out. So, what exactly, is he doing that warrants this title of “creator” other than using the unrealized gains (that apparently exist in the same general state as Schrodinger’s cat) to buy companies founded by other people?

@JizzelEtBass @KatyElphinstone it doesn’t even seem logical. It assumes that every child will have equal opportunity and means to be identified. No mistakes made, no parents without the means, no one with views that would prejudice them against proper evaluation (especially if the child’s parent, teacher, or doctor), no children that live their early life in a country where the situation is different, no gaps in understanding because the child is raised by people with a different culture, no doctors without sufficient education on autism, and on and on and on… any number of things could result in a delayed diagnosis.

@graydon @cstross and you know they probably won’t even have to tell governments that they will implement whatever sort of age gating or identity verification/tracking governments want on those systems. Because the governments will easily be able to force them to even assuming the system owners don’t want to in the first place.

@cstross@wandering.shop I learned on a manual and used maps, too. I drove alone a lot and, on long trips, I got used to pulling into a parking lot and making mental plans for where I was going to be going next to get to where I wanted. One time I was on a major road and didn’t see what I was expecting to see and didn’t have anywhere to pull over, so I was trying to check the map while driving and ended up driving onto a closed military base without realizing it. I later found out the other cars had stickers so didn’t have to stop. I was just going with the flow, so maybe they missed me somehow. I was fortunate that I wasn’t shot or arrested, but this was before 9/11 and they didn’t do anything. These days I do use electronic navigation and probably couldn’t get by if it went out for the simple fact that I haven’t owned a map in a decade or more.

@dgoldsmith “But Bauwens’ model bill targets licensed mental-health professionals. Under the bill, therapists or counselors could not “initiate, recommend, or facilitate social transition for a minor” – even if a parent requests it. Simply referring to a transgender child by their chosen name could cost a therapist their license or civil penalties.” Remember when republicans used to at least pretend to care about the “nanny state”?

@praetor @SrRochardBunson years back I read that most decently-sized companies in U.S. run their own insurance plans under the branding of an insurance company. I don’t know the full details, but it obviously has some problems for the employees. Found this page with a little more info: https://www.siia.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=7533 In 2000, 33% (50 million) of people with private insurance through their employer had a plan like this.

@cstross@wandering.shop I just had a thought after reading this: what if all of those stories about AI trying not to be turned off were intended to evoke a sense that it’s conscious so that some people would resist the idea of turning it off out of sympathy? Would some people think that some amount of environmental impact is worth it to keep a “conscious” thing conscious? Would some people potentially think it should be used because if it’s not used, it will “die”?

@SamanthaJaneSmith I hope my kids would trust me enough for the suggestion in the article to be unnecessary, but even if they didn’t, it’s unnecessary because I wouldn’t care. It’s telling that the article includes this: “Education secretary Bridget Phillipson said other proposed changes will include advice on mobile phone use, child sexual abuse, misogyny, grooming gangs and serious violence.”, essentially putting gender in the same category of these serious offenses (plus mobile phone use). Ms Phillipson said: "Parents send their children to school and college trusting that they'll be protected. Teachers work tirelessly to keep them safe. That's not negotiable, and it's not a political football." Then why are you turning this into one?
