Missing the age where 8 bits got you far, and 640K of ram was a dream. I've been computing since Knight Rider was so cool I turned off my Vic-20 to watch it.

I've loved making music since before the C64 SID chip ruled, and when the Atari 1040ST was hands down the best MIDI machine on the market.

Opinions are are my own. Boosts / favs do not imply agreement or endorsement. Remember to return your tray tables and seats to their original, upright position.

I'll repeat it again and loudly for the people in the back of the room: just because someone doesn't know what you're outraged about and asks for sources so they can form their own opinion doesn't necessarily mean they're acting in bad faith. It is 2026. The Internet is full of disinformation and other people acting in bad faith. Search engines deliver increasingly bad results that are full of slop.

Giving help to someone who asks for context and sources is a kindness. Name calling and sarcasm, even if they are acting in bad faith, is not the way.

And... blocking folks who are asking you to be polite is never a good look.

HumanOS has far too many unpatched critical flaws. These flaws go back at least 10,000 years.

The creators of HumanOS could not be reached for comment, however their representatives continue to refer to a vaguely written allegory that is thousands of years old.

Unfortunately these creators also tend to blame the HumanOS agents rather than themselves and promise to punish infractions. Eventually.

@stargrace@gamepad.club I saw a cut of Big Bang Theory without the laugh track. It was deeply grim and unfunny. At the time it made sense. Right on the edge of VCRs, between when people went to theaters and were used to the sounds of people enjoying the show with you. But it definitely didn't age well.

@TerminalTilt@social.terminaltilt.com I have been usingg OPNSense for quite a while, with their dedicated hardware device. Before that with a home built PC. Polished. Powerful. It's for home use for a work from home systems/cloud engineer (me). There's also a nice plugin repository with community and enterprise support. I would recommend this if you want to get a solid set up that you can set and then leave.

I fear that the acting is campy, the story a bit forced at times, and the effects have not held up per se. Babylon 5 has a good core of a story with strong points to make.

After all these years I'm able to forgive the failings of what are essentially window dressings. There's just an amazing story there, and of a scale never attempted in a show like this.

It's a series that somehow continues to get screwed over in spite of breaking so much new ground. I love it for that.

Somewhat a subtoot: When is the Automan reboot going to happen? HMM?!? 😆

What a horrible TV show. I liked it as a kid well enough, but even then, felt (for probably the first time) that the show was actually terrible.

Today's quandry: I have always, even when they were still being made, wanted an Amiga. I used one once, maybe twice. Now I'm wondering if investing in real hardware is a worthwhile pursuit. I have no real nostalgic connection to the system like I do my C64. So #askfedi / #retrocomputing folks: What is your take on diving into hardware retrocomputing for a system you've never owned?

@janbeta I adore mine as well. I reconfigured my office to have a "retro desk" and even shelled out for a venerable 1702 monitor. Unsolicited advice: if you don't like the keyboard springiness on the starlight, there's a good brace design available to 3d print. It's a rather simple mod, and you can put in an onboard SD card in while you're in there :)

@soapdog As a sidebar, I'd be really interested to hear about your MNT Pocket Reform adventures. I love the form factor. And, unfortunately, the counterpoint to your post is that Linux is getting bitten by the age verification bug, and Android/Google appears to be closing up for developers as well. I'm appalled at the idea of my OS requiring age verification, as that is the most user space of user space considerations. 🤷

Oh dear. We're at the B5 episode where they have the creepy classist/eugenicist/asshole species that sign on... for interesting and unfortunate reasons.

This is really where the writing and buildup of a larger story arc started paying off in the series.

@gourd you would not have nano to play with and would, if you'd installed Pine, have pico instead. You can't get much earlier than by going off to SLS. This predates Slackware. It was also often knowing how to build software from tarballs - common Makefile modifications, xmkmf -a and the like. Java was a far off dream. It was just such a strange time and way for me to lean computing with an OS like Linux, in parallel with OS/2 2.x, with a brief glimpse of Warp before going win 95 / Linux dual boot. You'd be a year or two away from a modular Linux kernal and there was no initrd. You booted this big old chunky kernal up and if it didn't know ext2 and your / partition (no logical volumes) was in ext2 then... Come back with a rebuilt kernal. Another fun dividing line is when we shifted from a.out to ELF. That was a nightmare to manage in Slackware.
