@jsstaedtler@mastodon.art Nintendo and associates tend to suffer the least from "why do all modern video games look like that" syndrome in my experience.
@jsstaedtler@mastodon.art it is some peak modern game graphics (derogatory) to make it blurrier though
Question: As someone who's been messing around with 90's retro computing in part to explore the fascinating juxtaposition of elements that stayed around to this day, the odd multimedia and early web elements, and the insane jank underpinning it all in this transitionary period, is it worth trying out early Linux?
It feels like it'd be like just kind of like using a non-systemd Linux distro but more archaic and a higher chance of needing to hand-tune Xorg.conf in nano, combined with restricted software availability especially due to dependencies on online repositories. But I'd love to be wrong and have another topic of study.
you know, I should be surprised this DVD set took a 480i60 show and somehow encoded episodes 480i60, 480p30 with bad deinterlacing, and "480p30 except for video effects shots which are 480i60" inexplicably across the same disc, but it's Shout Factory
Shout Factory: having no idea what interlacing is and what they should do with it for 15 years and counting
Doubled the video RAM in a computer I have for $10: taking a S3 Virge from 2 MB to 4 MB. :P
This has no real practical effect beyond bumping the highest resolutions and color depths I can use in Windows... and anything over 800x600 is too blurry on the monitor I'm using anyway. It's still a Virge, it still runs Quake at literally less than half the fps of the CPU in software rendering at 320x200 while having awful dithering, lol.
(The more useful mod I did to it was replacing the Video BIOS ROM with a modified version that disables a register that causes all Virges with the stock video BIOS to have terrible black levels.)
There is an extremely funny anti-Goldilocks zone where my Pentium MMX 233 MHz 90's computer has a CPU too fast for Sam and Max Hit the Road to run correctly because the MIDI output will crash above a certain speed, but is too slow to run ScummVM well. :ac_laughter:
(There is a fan patch for this issue here that came out in the last year, surprisingly. Not much demand with ScummVM around, understandably.)
Reading floppy disks? GOTTA GO FAST!
blacksky currently not loading messages for me again due to bluesky's vibe coding lol
I am also completely unsurprised Delta isn't that popular. I mean, I see an episode where a military industrial complex fucker who's bullish about Song Energy outlines for twelve minutes straight his thesis ultimately about the sheer difficulty of making popular music that opposes the status quo without being coopted and copied to the ends of capital in which he calls music the Ultimate Weapon literally and eat it up.
But I also completely understand why the general Macross audience is not there for it.
Macross Delta is the Eureka Seven AO of Macross (complimentary). :ac_laughter:
