India is in the midst of a groundswell of millions of people in protests across the country. The capital, Delhi, is a major epicentre. Mainstream media has completely sold out. They are not to be trusted even one iota, Other social media, despite accounts being blocked, are sharing both horrifying factual videos as well as inspiring goosebumpy material. One is attached here #india #protest #democracy #antifascist #students #youth #jantarmantar #cjp #corruption #song #music

Ironic Today's newspaper - The Times of India - Chennai Edition (4th July 26) News : Meta hosts paid child abuse ads on Instagram. There is image of Zukerberg wearing Meta glasses. A few pages later there is an ad for Meta glasses, & a guy stares at the viewer. I am sharing this sick irony because of this post https://infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon/116857858738669351 & how we cannot turn a blind eye at the depraved, souless , inhumans who control so much of the media & narrative. #media #socialmedia #nometa #noAI

Need some advice , and links, What is a good fediverse instance for a non profit. (Nature, Environment, Environmental Justice ) One requirement would be allowing longer than 500 character posts. Another feature, if possible, some text formatting options ( is that even feasible) Where can one compare instances #feditips #fediverse #fedihelp #askforhelp #askfedi Thanks in advance

A Blue whistling thrush (Myophonus caeruleus), from my bird photo archives (March 2019)

A Very beautiful, happy bird in the Himalayas, It's melodic and regular morning songs are a joy in themselves.

Location : Front yard of my home in the Himalayas circa 2200 metres about sea level.

@DecAnseo @sarahdalgulls I was going to share the same thing The only major difference is the sam vines theory is from the perspective of a poor person. But essentially the same This worsening is enforced by keeping people poor - poor wages, make basics more expensive, while the rich as usual walk off with the astronomical margins.

Travel Part 2 | Update
After a break the next phase is New Delhi - Haldwani

The approach to New Delhi Railways Station Paharganj side is an unholy mess. Fairly sure the 24 x 7 traffic jam is some well thought out strategy to frustrate passengers by making them walk annoyingly large distances over broken & obstructed paths. It is a capital horror.

The access to the platform via the default over bridge is constricted by a lift.

A few days ago, on a walk in South India, a close friend & awesome naturalist, casually pointed out 2 species of carnivorous plants, Sundews Drosera indica (Indian Sundew) , & D burmanii (Tropical sundew) For me, this was a big natural history moment, my first ever look at wild carnivorous plants. Just so awesome & beautiful https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drosera_indica & https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drosera_burmanni #carnivorousplants #IndiasNature #botany #plants #evolution #naturewalks #drosera #droseraindica #droseraburmanii

@solitha@mastodon.social understood Aadhaar is headed that way already For many services (including new sims) fingerprint verification is required. Many agencies - both govt, and private are self adopting biometric verification even in violation of the law the explicitly states it is not to be used for such purposes. I think it is a short matter if time that GenAI will have access to stolen biometrics that will be misused.

@solitha@mastodon.social @pantheonw@kcmo.social @Gargron@mastodon.social This has already happened in India We have a national id card called Aadhaar - biometric based (finger iris scan) This is alongwith multiple other nationally acceptable ids. (Election Voter, Driving License, Tax Permanent Account Number, Passport) And strangely the highest court has ruled that none of these are proof of citizenship. Proof of Citizenship will be a combination of documents. (Birth Certificate, parents id etc etc)

Received this from a a friend.

Small-hack/open-slopware

Free/Open Source Software tainted by LLM developers/developed by genAI boosters, along with alternatives.

***

Found it interesting to know what software I may be affected

But as my friend says "there's also just lots of expectations from foss developers who do this in their free time & its a way for them to save some time"

@bovaz @dbattistella Thanks for the news, and the article. I too searched and found the same link, but what stood out , amongst other things is that this study is published in 1996. 3 decades ago. While this method has not changed there are likely newer methods, to kill insects, being used. Wonder if anything has changed ( presence of insects, population of insects, other (ans alternative) methods and their effectiveness.

@petersuber They are just doing it in a crude manner. So called democratic regimes across the world are taking advantage of every crisis to undermine key institutions across their respective governments. Worse is that such a move will embolden broligarch companies who have they hidden voices in the ears of governments to repeat such measures across more countries. End times for sure. 😠

@bovaz @dbattistella There is a low cost variation of a zapper in use A light is in some kind of inverted covered lampside Bugs get close and slip down or fall into a "trap bucket" . They dont die immediately, they are just trapped and eventually die of "being inescapably" trapped. The trap buckets are cleaned once in a while, while the light also functions as a regular outdoor light. Dried Dung has been used forever as a smoke based repellent, chemical ones are both lethal & non lethal

@chadkoh@indieweb.social Interesting I understand in this day & age of strife & war around fossil fuels, & also climate change it is good to see these alternatives showing up & being used effectively However, want to caution about the tech some countries are using. As a resident in the himalayas, with good knowledge of hydro power, i can say it is not really renewable (glaciers will be gone in 30 odd years), these are also socially & ecologically dirty + climate change issues too https://web.stanford.edu/group/efmh/jacobson/WWSBook/Countries100Pct.pdf

Always searching for a good cup of south India filter coffee.

The best ones, of course, are the ones, made at home, in which the coffee is carefully chosen (grind and combination of coffee), meticulously brewed, hand mixed, & lovingly served with a side of some tasty snack ( or not)

The ones in the picture would be among the better ones available to buy. One is strong, another is medium. Also aesthetically pleasing.

@alexadeswift @fabio Which tablet is this ? I was thinking that a way to avoid google/ ios all together would be to access mobile internet via a hotspot dongle + non smart phone (for otp's) (India loves otp's our lives revolve around dozens of otp's a day) And the front end for mobile computing could be a non google non ios tablet So very keen to know about such devices Thanks
