Remember, kids:
In proper scientific terms, an attempt to explain observable phenomena is called a "hypothesis".
It is called a "theory" when it fits all the observable facts, and there is no observable evidence to the contrary. We don't call it a "truth" because there's always a chance that it might be overturned by later evidence - but as far as science is concerned, a "theory" is as hard as it gets.
This is often confusing to people who dismiss science they don't like as "it's just a theory". But this distinction should be kept in mind when discussing things like the "Theory of Evolution", "Theory of Relativity", "Global Warming Theory", and "Dead Internet Theory".

Emergenz: Der Ursprung biologischer Komplexität
Von einfachen Molekülen bis zur ersten lebenden Zelle war es kein plötzlicher Sprung, sondern eine Entwicklung über viele Stufen zunehmender Komplexität. Das klingt vielleicht zunächst banal, ist aber, so finde ich jedenfalls, wirklich spannend.
Eine Übersichtsarbeit der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt beleuchtet genau diesen Übergang und beschreibt, wie aus chemischen Wechselwirkungen schrittweise Systeme entstehen konnten, die wir letztlich als Leben bezeichnen.
Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei das Konzept der „Emergenz“. Gemeint ist, dass neue Eigenschaften entstehen, wenn unterschiedliche Bestandteile miteinander wechselwirken. Diese Eigenschaften lassen sich gleichzeitig aber nicht einfach aus den einzelnen Komponenten ableiten. Das Ergebnis ist quasi mehr, als die Summe der einzelnen Teile.
Ein klassisches Beispiel ist Wasser: Einzelne Wasserstoff- oder Sauerstoffatome besitzen noch keine der besonderen Eigenschaften, die Wasser auszeichnen. Erst ihre Verbindung erzeugt ein Molekül mit völlig neuen physikalischen Eigenschaften.
Die Arbeit beschreibt, dass genau solche emergenten Eigenschaften vermutlich entscheidend für die Entstehung des Lebens waren. Wasser spielt dabei eine zentrale Rolle. Durch seine Polarität zwingt es Molekülen bestimmte räumliche Ordnungen auf. So lagern sich beispielsweise fettartige, wasserabweisende Molekülteile bevorzugt nach innen zusammen, während wasserliebende Bereiche nach außen zeigen. Dadurch können sich komplexe Strukturen stabil bilden, wie etwa Membranen, die wir gestern schon näher betrachtet haben (reminder: Lipiddoppelschicht). Das gilt aber natürlich auch für Proteine oder eben Nukleinsäuren wie RNA und DNA.
In einem immer komplexeren System werden so manchmal kritische Zustände erreicht, bei denen sich durch Emergenz fundamentale Eigenschaften ändern oder einfach neu entstehen. Dadurch werden plötzlich neue Funktionen möglich, z. B. Moleküle, die ihre eigene Struktur reproduzierbar „beschreiben“ können. Erst dadurch werden Prozesse wie Replikation, Vererbung und letztlich Evolution überhaupt möglich.
Wichtig ist, dass diese Übergänge nicht als geradliniger Plan verstanden werden sollte, sondern das Ergebnis unzähliger Wechselwirkungen, Zufälle und eben emergenter Prozesse. Da ist nichts ülanbar.
Würde man die Erde vier Milliarden Jahre zurücksetzen und alles noch einmal beginnen lassen, würde vermutlich etwas völlig anderes entstehen als das Leben, das wir heute kennen, weil einfach die zugrundeliegenden Zufälle andere wären.
