Your Ecosia searches in Germany just became more independent.
Earlier this month, we started delivering results from our European search index to some searches in Germany, and plan to serve a majority of German search queries by Janaury.
Right now, most searches in Europe depend on infrastructure controlled by just a few US companies.
So we built an alternative.
Together with @Qwant@mastodon.social, we created European Search Perspective, a European search index for more choice and digital sovereignty 🚀

We're working over 600 farming families in Kenya to plant trees, restore land, and improve livelihoods.
Joseph and Mary have been planting trees since 2023, and now have almost 100 fruit trees on their small farm. They're seeing better fruit yields, healthier soil, and more income to support their family.
This is what progress looks like.

Around the world, cities are making room for nature.
Concrete and asphalt trap heat, making heatwaves even harder to deal with.
That’s why more and more cities are bringing nature back into urban spaces 🌳
From planting urban forests to replacing paved spaces with greenery, these solutions help keep cities cooler and more liveable for everyone 💚
Which one would you like to see in your city?

This isn’t just another summer.
Wildfires are tearing through France and Spain, North Africa and Canada.
France has already seen one of its worst wildfire seasons on record. Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to evacuate across France and Spain.
And the fire season isn't over yet.
But the worst is not inevitable.
Cut fossil fuel emissions.
Protect and restore ecosystems.
Strengthen communities against climate impacts.

Your searches on Ecosia helped bring this landscape back to life in Ethiopia 🌳
Together with our partner Green Ethiopia, we’ve planted 20,000 trees here since 2017.
These trees are already making a huge difference for people and wildlife: they’re cooling the land, restoring water cycles and stopping the soil from washing away 💚
Keep searching to help us restore even more landscapes!

🔎 Search engines are infrastructure. And infrastructure must be neutral.
In energy, rail, and telecoms, whoever controls the infrastructure cannot favor their own services. The same logic must apply to search.
At Ecosia, we index the web. We don't compete with it.
Users deserve genuine choice.

Meet Amaille.
In 2023, she started planting trees alongside her crops in Nyarusange, Rwanda.
Today, those trees protect her fields from erosion, hold moisture in the soil, and naturally boost her crop yields.
The extra income has changed everything. Amaille was able to buy livestock, secure money for her family’s healthcare, and send all four of her children to school.
Want to see more farmers like Amaille succeed? Switch your search engine to Ecosia 🌍🌱

What does it take to prepare thousands of trees for planting? 🌴
In West Bengal, India, our partners at Symagine Solutions are getting ready for the planting season.
Community members help raise and distribute seedlings, and community leaders (many of them women) train others in how to plant and care for them 🌱
Households receive a small number of saplings at a time, so each tree can get the care it needs.
This is what collective restoration looks like 💚

3 million trees financed in Spain, the US, Peru, and more 🌳
Not just any trees: biodiverse, native trees that are not meant for carbon offsets.
Trees that make landscapes more resilient to fires, provide incomes to local communities, restore water sources, and protect wildlife 🌱
Trees that are protected and monitored for decades to come.

POV: you helped this forest heal 🌴
Since 2020, we’ve helped restore this forest in Sumatra with our partner Leuser Conservation Forum, planting 15,240 biodiverse trees while supporting the forest’s natural regeneration.
6 years later, the area is already getting cooler and receiving more rainfall!
Local farmers can harvest fruit from the trees, while Sumatran tigers and sun bears have been spotted near the restoration sites 💚

We’re burning this forest to bring it back.
Together with our new partner Paskaia, we’re supporting Indigenous Miskito communities in Honduras, working to break that cycle.
Local fire brigades patrol the land, build firebreaks and put out uncontrolled fires 🔥
But they also carry out controlled burns.
Burning vegetation around protected areas removes fuel for future wildfires and can also help the pine forest regenerate by releasing seeds from its cones.

Getting ready to plant trees in West Bengal, India 🇮🇳🌳
Our partners at Symagine work with local communities who raise tree seedlings.
Community leaders teach the community how to plant and care for them. Then, each household takes home a few saplings 🌱
The leaders then visit the families and help keep track of how the trees are growing.
A forest, grown by the community that lives there 💚

Only one of these streets is built for a heatwave.
Trees are some of the best cooling tools cities have.
In some conditions, they can cool urban air by up to 8°C and land surfaces by up to 12°C.
They also filter air pollution, make streets more walkable, and create homes for wildlife 🌳
Does your city need more trees?

Your income shouldn’t shape how much shade you get. But it does.
In US cities, wealthier neighbourhoods often have far more tree cover than lower-income ones — the result of decades of disinvestment and redlining.
That means cooler streets and cleaner air for some, and more concrete and heat for others.
Trees are climate infrastructure. Every neighbourhood deserves them.

Sometimes the best thing you can do to restore a forest is… nothing 🌱
This project with our partner GEOTA in Portugal is a good reminder that restoring forests isn’t one-size-fits-all.
Some areas are being left to regenerate naturally. Others are being restored by planting a mix of native species.
The more we learn about how landscapes recover after fire, the better we can understand when to step in and when to let nature do its thing 💚

This is what a forest recovering after a wildfire looks like.
This landscape in Verdelhos, Portugal, has burned 4 times. But in this plot, we’re not planting any trees 🌳
It’s easy to assume that bringing back a forest always means planting. That’s not true.
After a fire, surviving roots and stumps can resprout, while seeds can germinate 🌱
So here, together with our partner GEOTA, we’re letting the forest regenerate naturally and monitoring which vegetation returns.

What's fuelling Indonesia's fires?
El Niño is making this year’s fires worse, but that’s not the whole story.
Across Sumatra and Borneo, forests have been cleared and peatlands drained to make space for palm oil and pulp plantations.
This has made these landscapes more vulnerable to fire.
Real prevention means protecting and restoring natural ecosystems.
None of our partners in Indonesia are currently affected, but we’re keeping a close eye on the situation 💚

Europe is baking. Again. 🌡️ And the difference between living in a neighbourhood filled with concrete or trees is massive.
One stores heat, the other provides shade.
Urban trees cool streets, clean the air, and make cities liveable when temperatures rise.
But most European cities are running low on them — and not everyone gets the same access.

In southern Europe, major wildfires have burned through almost 20,000 hectares, forcing thousands to flee their homes.
In Colorado and Utah, fires have also burned huge areas of land.
Climate change is making forests easier to burn.
Europe went from extreme wet conditions to record-breaking heatwaves. Rain helps vegetation grow, and heat dries it out — leaving more fuel for fires.
But there’s another problem we don’t talk about enough: how forests are managed.

This isn't just another summer.
Parts of Europe, North America, North Africa and South America are facing severe heatwaves and wildfires.
Many broke records before peak fire season even arrived.
In France, 116,000 hectares have burned this season. Across Spain and France, 300,000 people have been displaced.
None of this is random.
It's what scientists have warned about for decades: a hotter planet means fires that burn hotter and faster🌡️
We can't let this become the new normal.

Even trees need personal space 🌳
Crown shyness is when neighboring treetops leave river-like gaps between them.
Scientists still don’t know exactly why it happens.
One theory is that it could be the result of competition for resources such as light. Keeping a distance may also help prevent pests and diseases spreading from one tree to another.
Next time you’re in a forest, look up ✨
