Himalayan blue poppy, Tibetan blue poppy (Meconopsis). Endemic to the Himalayas, including parts of Tibet, southwestern China, Myanmar, and Bhutan. They achieve that striking color through aninternal pH balance within its petals that interacts with co-pigments, turning what would normally be a purple anthocyanin pigment into a vivid sky blue. #flowers #nature #biology #chemistry #plants #photo #science

The poor sunbittern stands completely alone on the family tree. 🌳🧬 It is the sole surviving member of its entire family (Eurypygidae) and genus. Plus, despite its heron-like look and name, it’s actually more closely related to rails and cranes! Evolution really made just one of these and broke the mold.

Walking Iris flowers (Neomarica caerulea). They earned their nickname via their unique propagation method: the flower dies, a new plantlet forms on the tip of the flowering stalk. As the stalk grows heavy, it bends to the ground & lets the new plantlet to take root away from the parent plant, effectively "walking" across the garden over time. #flowers #nature #biology #photo #plants #garden

The Earth has endless desert sand, but it’s unsuitable for building—wind erosion makes desert grains too smooth & rounded to bind in concrete.
The actual bottleneck is construction-grade sand (sharp, angular grains from rivers and seabeds). We consume 50 billion tons annually—faster than nature replenishes it. #environment #ecology #nature #science

The viral red, pulsing Earth is an artistic visualization, not a literal planetary heart. The imagery uses real satellite data showing photosynthesis, plant life and vegetation health, with the rhythmic pulsing representing daily & seasonal biological cycles responding to sunlight. Earth has real natural rhythms, but the video poetically depicts its “breathing” biosphere, not a glowing heart. #science #environment #nature

Science fact of the day. Pistol shrimp can mimic the temperature of the sun: When a pistol shrimp snaps its claw, it shoots a jet of water so fast it creates a cavitation bubble. When that bubble collapses, it generates a flash of light and temperatures reaching over 4,700 ∘C (5,000 K, 8493•F)nearly as hot as the surface of the sun.🌞 #science #wildlife #physics #biology #sun
