Someone knowledgeable has probably analysed this properly already, but guessing it's no coincidence that the Telstra GPS time server rolled back to Nov 2006 and there are 1024 weeks between 22 Nov 2006 and 8 Jul 2026... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPS_week_number_rollover https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/jul/10/2006-throwback-took-down-telstra-national-phone-networ

@decryption@aus.social hmm, dunno about this - there's only 0.07% difference in actual tyre diameter because the 18s are 60 profile and the 20s are 50 profile. They've probably done that to keep the actual tyre diameter as close as they can make them. (Can plug the numbers into a calculator like https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/ to see the diameters.) The 18s with the extra profile will probably ride a bit nicer, I'm generally skeptical of the auto industry's tendency to go for huge wheels. But not sure if it'll make a difference on range specifically. EDIT: My % was off by a factor of 10

This morning I noticed that my little home server's Home Assistant OS VM was configured with libvirt domain type="qemu" instead of type="kvm".

(As one does, I suppose?)

That four to three letter change makes quite the difference to CPU usage and power consumption!

I'd quietly judged Home Assistant for being unreasonably resource hungry, but the culprit was me and my footgun collection once again...

Any fellow Aussies have a quality home weather station recommendation? My parents gave us a Jaycar one when we moved in over eight years ago. It's been limping along for several years now, intermittently works. I keep thinking about designing and making something, but realistically I don't think I'll ever put that time in. (Although if there was a solid existing open source design then I'd consider building one.)

@jpm@aus.social @Unixbigot@aus.social @emily@fedi.uni.horse @itgrrl@infosec.exchange @voltagex@infosec.exchange oh wow I leave you lot alone for an afternoon and you go and design a vintage space keypad! Irrepressible. Er, I own a weird custom keyboard but I don't know much about them. One thing I would say is that taking an existing similar keypad design in kicad (if you can find one), tweaking the schematic a bit to add/remove keys, and doing a new board layout to place the bits is probably not an absurd amount of work for a beginner. Sending the design off to be made is a pretty friendly process these days, too. None of it is totally simple but I think achievable without too much cursing (especially with some help, as offered). The only other fiddly bit is designing whatever enclosure it sits in and making sure it fits right, but looks like you may be already on to that?

@decryption@aus.social @mattrobertson@aus.social when we got our Sigenergy battery I got them to move our existing EV charger onto the Sigen gateway's "smart port". This feature lets you enable or disable "battery boost" for the connected load (i.e. does it discharge the battery or not). Plus can switch that load on/off manually, or automatically based on PV surplus. That said, in retrospect I think I overthought the "don't charge car from house battery" thing. When the car has needed charging at full power (rather than only from surplus solar) I have let it discharge the house battery, like Matt says might as well use the free energy you already have stored. Probably if the car was charging like that all the time I wouldn't do it though, to avoid the accumulated charge cycles on the house battery. 🤷‍♂️ Edit: clarified about surplus solar

He was only there because ABB called me up totally unprompted and said "we reckon your internet could be faster, do you want us to send out NBNCo to have a look?" (And they were right, something somewhere needed de-rusting.) They earned a lot of loyalty from me then, hopefully it's still deserved!

Surely if you're a rental car business and you discover this about your SaaS provider then you'd leave as soon as you can get past the emergency, right?

Or do you just shrug and say "software, it's terrible but what are you gonna do?" and then pay your next month's bill to these clowns?

@pl@mastodon.social I get this in Firefox Focus (149.0.2) installed from the Play Store on GrapheneOS. Weirdly the "Advanced..." specifics don't give the right reason, but the warning is here. Vanadium loads the page without any warning, same as others have reported. If it's useful then I can install the latest Firefox for Android from Play Store and see what it does as well.

This is Firefox 149.0.2 with Play Services 26.09.31 and GrapheneOS build 2026040801 on a Pixel 6a. Happy to test anything else which might be helpful to look at, as this seems odd if others don't see it! Edit: Sorry, I've replied to the wrong part of the thread here - meant to reply to my reply about Focus showing the error.

Linux Homelab VM care and feeding
@shlee@aus.social Yeah, IKR! Not sure, I think the guest rebooted faster but otherwise the same. That VM is idle most of the time. The power graph is for the whole host, which runs a bunch of little services as well as the HA VM! I would guess the difference is almost entirely qemu not having to run in userspace to check if the guest needs to wake up when it doesn't. Delegating all of that to the host kernel via KVM lets the CPU wake up less, and maybe even get into a lower P-state (speculating).

@markisherwood@kind.social @pl@mastodon.social Hmm, yeah. Vanadium does fine when the cert is revoked via OCSP i.e. https://revoked.grc.com/ And Lets Encrypt doesn't support OCSP at all since last year, meaning CRL revocations only. There are a lot of old posts claiming that Chromium & WebView for Android don't support CRL revocation at all. I can't find any recent confirmation of whether that's still the case. But that would be a simple explanation. A more nuanced possibility is that the cert's CRL URL is HTTP (true in this case and most cases) and is therefore being blocked by a no-cleartext policy at some layer. There's a description of that pattern in this (otherwise unrelated) comment https://github.com/rustls/rustls-platform-verifier/pull/179#issuecomment-2971944947 I'm now 100% procrastinating on going outside, so I'm going to go outside instead of either installing Chrome or reading Chromium source code. 😆
