In case anyone needs it, #Windows Media Player "Legacy" still works on Windows 11, still supports skins from https://wmpskinsarchive.neocities.org/ and is happily playing #FLAC.

RE: https://social.treehouse.systems/@ariadne/116904308272013280 This wasn't an exaggeration. RE: https://aus.social/@Robinzz3/117062547486706911

It's not what you use, but it's

  • what the local gardening group uses
  • what the local Scout group uses
  • what the local Park Run uses
  • what your old school friends use
  • what your family uses

A lot of Fedi seems to forget about network effects and what allowed Facebook to grow in the first place.

You want to dismantle it? Build something better - but people will go where their friends are and where the people they want to talk to are.

@Viss@mastodon.social depends on what you can get on to the Windows Update server. Windows Update is looking for a driver matching a vendor and product ID, that inf is then declaring a Windows App ID. Realtek, Logitech and NVidia do it too, LG was just louder about it.

[edit: narrowed this down - grab an MP3/FLAC file, rename it to have a single quote somewhere in the name, zip it up]

#AskFedi Possible #AdamFindsBugs, can I get someone to check my work here?

Grab one of the zip files you bought from #Bandcamp on #BandcampFriday but *don't* unpack it.

Drop it on to the VLC playlist - does it work?

I'm getting

main debug: `file:///C:/Users/User/Downloads/Synkro%20-%20Memories%20(2008-2011).zip' successfully opened
directory warning: unable to read directory

but it is actually able to read the first file in the archive and pull tags.

I wonder what it would look like to organise a "distributed", wide ranging review, especially to find dependencies like this. Humans only, of course.

@jana Thanks for this - it took quite a bit to find where that's actually documented. https://docs.docker.com/engine/network/port-publishing/#gateway-modes Seems like it might expose individual container IPs to the Internet though as outgoing traffic comes from those IPs. Guess I can't have it both ways (I prefer everything to be behind a single reverse proxy)
