The world's averagest climber.
I make stuff out of wood, metal, fabric, flour, polygons, code and wires.
Part human, part bicycle.
King of a small but mighty whippet army.
Learning by doing with Linux.
I use, and write free scripts for, Blender, DaVinciResolve, Krita, Inkscape and others.
PfP: Hydrothermal Vent Polychaete Worm by Nicolas Gayet from Paulo Bonifacio lab, that I animated.

If you're a sewist in Australia it's getting harder to find decent fabric supplies in-store, now that Lincraft is going online-only. But give Spotlight a miss (and Anaconda and Harris Scarfe) "It was reported in the news today that Lincraft has gone into administration and all stores will be closed. A lot of you are probably thinking of switching to Spotlight. I would encourage you to know first that Spotlight Group was founded by two Israeli billionaires. One of the directors of the company is also the President of the Zionist Foundation of Australia. Spotlight channels money to Israel via its corporate charities division, The Spotlight Foundation. ...Spotlight Group also includes the companies Anaconda, Harris Scarfe, and Mountain Designs. There was a boycott way back in 2023 but it was before most people were fully aware of the situation and may not have picked up much steam." #sewing #BDS #BoycottIsrael

If you're a Wacom user on a Mac, do NOT upgrade to Golden Gate. All you get is some AI crap, more liquid ass nonsense and having to use a freakin mouse like it's the stone age because your tablet stops working. I don't have admin rights on this machine, so I'm going to have to beg IT to install it, but does anyone use Open Tablet Driver on Mac? Is it worth the paperwork I'd have to do to get it installed? #MacOS #Wacom #OpenTabletDriver

I'm making a pattern for a bouldering chalkbag in Inkscape, and I was laying out the pages so that they would tile for my printer by hand, and thought to myself "this is going to take *minutes*, I bet that in only a few dozen hours I can write a script to do this automatically". So I wrote my first Inkscape extension.
It overlaps pages with optional registration marks. The extension, and the chalkbag pattern are up on my codeberg.

Today we went to not only the best contemporary art gallery I've been to in Tokyo, but possibly also the strangest. Without any prior knowledge and just because it was close to where we were, we thought we'd give the Ueshima Museum in Shibuya a go.
It didn't start well. To enter you have to get a QR code emailed via a website which involves the usual Japanese rigmarole of providing waaaaay too much personal information (you should absolutely lie about everything but your email address if you're concerned about data security). So after standing in the heat fiddling with our phones and auto translated websites and clunky UX I was rather grumpy and expecting it to be a waste of time.
Once we finally got the QR code to work and made it into the air conditioned lobby is when it started getting word. There was no one at the front desk, which is highly unusual for Japan, where the norm is it takes one person to sell you the ticket, another to process the payment, one to check the ticket and someone else to stand there just wearing white gloves and being polite.
But there was no one. Just a series of locked galleries we had to scan into with the QR code. It seemed like we were the only people in the building for our entire visit apart from an old woman who was either mopping the floor or doing performance art.
Just us and … wait, that's a Warhol, there's a couple of Banksys, some Tracy Emins, Olafur Eliasson, Louise Bourgeois, Yayoi Kusama, James Turrell, Chiharu Shiota, Ryoji Ikeda, and so it went.
5 floors of big name international and Japanese contemporary artists and we were completely alone in the galleries the whole time.
Absolutely wild experience. A must-see if you like contemporary art and particularly if you hate crowds.

Picture is not related, just some HVAC bonsai that I saw on the way.

Looking at Marmite as a static site generator, and being dismayed that it's shockingly easy to get it installed, set it up, and learn how to use it, because now I have to actually do the work of creating the content. Why didn't somebody warn me? #marmite #ssg #FOSS

Finally got to B-Pump in Tokyo. It's bigger than anything in Australia, but I gotta say, the bouldering gyms in Melbourne beat it in lots of ways. Spoogy holds, OK but not brilliant setting, and the facilities were pretty poor. My gym in Melbourne has a sauna, weights gym, and three types of water on tap, at B-Pump there aren't even showers and you have to buy water from a vending machine.

@sturmsucht@mastodon.social @berniethewordsmith@neopaquita.es After looking around for a distro that played nicely with Davinci Resolve (they suggest Rocky, but I did Not Like) I ended up using Garuda, which is a similar gamer focused distro, but Arch-based. It provided easy installation and tweaks to get everything working without too much fuss. Apart from the lurid colour scheme (think 17 year old boy's idea of cool desktop theme) it was a rock-solid desktop for $dayjob. My later installs have all been Arch from scratch but it was a good way to get into the distro. #GarudaLinux #Arch

@luciedigitalni@aus.social They used to have these desktop lens-grinding machines that would make the prescription lenses while you waited, it took twenty minutes or so, and the one in Sydney apparently had a little injection molding machine that could recycle plastic that you brought in to make new frames. But something happened and now it takes like a week. I get my glasses there because I lose glasses on the regular, so it's really not worth getting anything more expensive. And I like not having to choose what style to get. My partner has multifocals from them, she hasn't complained, but YMMV.
