Opened a can of evaporated milk for a recipe. The contents were a deep yellow colour that seemed suspicious, so I searched on the internet "what colour should evaporated milk be?" Page after page (I stopped scrolling at about 60 results) of near-identical AI generated useless websites, each with paragraph after paragraph of "What is evaporated milk? What do you use it for? What are the scientific reasons for its colour?" None just with a photo saying "if your milk looks like this, don't use it". Strategy 2 - read bottom of can. Best Before 2020-06-30.

It has been 0️⃣ days since esteemed senior colleague has said "I asked ChatGPT and it told me it would be better if we did this" and I was forced to reply with a list of examples of why it was talking out of its arse 🙃

Have just been sent the most amazing Excel spreadsheet, the sort of thing that would make you think "there is no way that agency would use a spreadsheet to calculate this very important thing, oh shit looks like they do". Macros and ActiveX out the wahoo. So beautiful.

I will admit, this is probably all not helped by geospatial tools being [[extremely silly]] and NetCDF files also being [[extremely silly]]. I went through multiple iterations of: "Of course, you naturally need to store the dimensions as (lat, lon, time)" Okay but now this next step is failing. "Oh that's because the convention in that file format is (lon, lat, time), you had better change it to that!" Okay but now I'm getting this new error. "Of course you are! That was expected behaviour and only natural, because this tool I've recommended you use requires the time dimension first! Here's code to change the dimension order to (time, lon, lat). Guaranteed to work." Folks, it did not.

Loading 440,000 CSV files into R simultaneously can't possibly go wrong, I'll just go grab a cup of tea while it figures it out.

@graham_knapp@hachyderm.io increasingly hard in Australia - we get a lot of applicants (particularly international) but the vast, vast majority are just fishing and sending applications to every academic listed on the website. At least half the emails I receive spell my name wrong or are addressed to the wrong person. Meanwhile, stipends are horrifically low and so I don't blame local applicants for looking for a real job instead.

@lydiaschoch@mastodon.social it's also incredible how many small businesses *do* have websites, that look relatively modern... But don't say anywhere on them what city they are based in. "Our qualified staff offer these services" yes, but are you 2,000kms away from me or not?

@PaulMcEwan that "requirement" to use it drives me nuts - we don't have that yet (or at least I don't as an academic, I'm unsure what professional staff are dealing with), and I just don't understand it. It feels very much like measuring something for the sake of measurement, rather than actual real outcomes and efficiencies. While my experience was very much about trying it out to see what the fuss is all about, I did try to use it legitimately, in the way we have been trained and advised to do, and it just wasted so much of my time. Tomorrow I will implement my own solution from scratch reading real documentation, it's going to take less time and I will learn more.

@mlazz @PaulMcEwan burn some tokens writing bad poetry. The problem is, I think it's all just to justify the cost, someone somewhere wants evidence the thing they're paying for is being used so they can keep paying for it and maybe get invited to some cool vendor parties, or something. Like I said, I haven't been told I *have* to use it, but I sure get a lot of emails inviting me to workshops so I can "learn to use it more". I've never been told to attend a workshop encouraging me to increase my usage of the spell checker or the print preview.

@doc yes I think that might be my next step, to be honest. The input data came as NetCDF so I was attempting to stick with it so the additional variables I'm calculating are in the same format, but honestly I might just convert everything over.

@bencourtice I mean, that exact issue, psychosocial harm from forced AI usage in the workplace, is exactly what we're trying to get in a new staff agreement, but management isn't buying it, naturally.

@daisy@cloudisland.nz @futzle@old.mermaid.town there's also an issue that the LLMs are stuck churning out janky, inefficient interpreted code. Surely if this tool was powerful and real, it would just spit out raw machine code, why the middleware of Python or whatever? Alas, there was no corpus of commented, documented assembly language for the models to steal...

@eliocamp that's useful, I think the thing that was really causing the problem was that my input NetCDF had unprojected latlon, while the output was being written as "projected" (still lat/long though), and nothing I threw at things could get the grids matched.

@bakuninboys low standards? Maybe they just...do a different sort of work than I do? (which I do think is a legitimate issue, this is not being marketed as a refined tool for specific tasks, it's being sold as the Universal Do-Anything Machine, from responding to customer enquiries, to coding, to writing legal documents, to taking medical notes...)
