Infrastructure, automation and general computer chaos wrangler.
Old exotic computers enthusiast, general nerd.
I sometimes make music that was more fun to create than to listen to, under the name KONKØN.
Parfois en français.

Sometimes, the powershell autocomplete from history thing unearths amazing things I have no immediate context for
Sentences that immediately signal the opposite of their meaning:
- It's not a cult
- I'm not racist
- This management change won't affect your day to day
- I don't have a folder full of pictures of bare feet
- This food definitely doesn't contain poison
Sometimes I want to make one of these 45 minutes long youtube video essays on profoundly specific nerd shit, odd forgotten stuff form the 90s that just disappeared. I could call it "Where are they now?" and episode 1 would definitely be about the Briefcase in Windows 95.
I bought a cute MP3 player in an attempt to maybe return to owning my music collection and reduce dependency on stream services, and now that I'm trying to figure out how what kind of workflow makes the most sense for managing my music library and syncing it, I'm discovering the software landscape has been more or less stagnant since I last used something like that.
Are there any good multi platform solutions or should I just use mpd and rsync basically?
Current track I'm listening to that I think you should probably hear too:
A Yamaha YM2151 arrangement/remake of "Goin' Down the Fast Way" from Rise of the Triad (DOS, 1994), which on its own is a banger, but this cover is beyond sick. The harmonies with the vibrato hit just right
Rise of the Triad - Goin' Down the Fast Way (YM2151 + Irem GA20 Cover) (Oscilloscope View)
Is that exosphere in Debian Sid repositories? Why yes it is!
It feels strange to have something I made just (eventually) casually be available via apt-get.
Listen I would 100% prefer a crudely drawn, shitty mspaint image to support your article or be your stupid thumbnail than one of these shitty orange AI images that all look like they came straight out of the same corporate PSA about not pissing against the wind
I don't really do the "plug the stuff you made" thing super aggressively, but it feels exceptionally relevant today:
If you're sitting there wrangling updates for your homelab or small to mid size network on debian or redhat likes, because of a certain CVE, and you wish there was a a way to simply get a view of the state of that across all your systems, in one place, you could give my tool a go. It has a nice UX and requires nothing except ssh.
On this Caturday, the old man takes a nap with his favorite toy.
I'm possibly being E X T R A about basic things again, but turns out I quite enjoy making nice TUIs.
I'm realizing that No Man's Sky is actually a pretty good Couch Game, with a steam controller.
I hadn't finished the story in spite of over 160 hours in it, and it turns out that got genuinely good after Atlas Rises. This whole thing suffers from terraria syndrome, where there's now so much content I barely know how to start, so that'll be fun to return to.
Good times
The weekend has been full of trying to catch up on sleep and failing due to having to give my cat medication and saline injections at set intervals, but on the huge upside, the old boy is doing super well, and starting to be a piece of shit again, which is all you can ask for in your beloved friend.
I'm glad to have him back home.
Ruff 0.16 has a bunch of new rules enabled by default, most of them good, but holy shit are some of them agressive.
I also feel like giving advice to no one in particular, for no particular reason, in no particular order:
- Don't "fix" shit by creating a new problem
- Do semantic versioning like an adult in the first place, this 0.X.Y shit means fuck all
- Maybe when you make a library that is used by a zillion people, having some stable LTS thing might be a good idea, you know?
Went to visit my cat at the animal hospital today and they book you a private room and do stuff like this, which is super human and comforting.
It's a good place, honestly
He is NOT a super cuddly cat at the best of times, more of a "I will sit very close to you no matter where you are" guy, so after having been touched and picked up by a bunch of people he doesn't like very much, he was kind of full of anxiety, but he calmed down when I picked him up like I do whenever I show him stuff he's never seen around the house, like light switches.
He looks healthier, and has gained weight, which is pretty good. Vet said his Creatinine levels are dropping significantly, which is News of the Optimistic Kind. They're keeping him at least one more day.
Tomorrow is a holiday here so today is Saturday 2.
I hacked at my thing, showered, hung out in my bed with the cat while reading manga and relaxed. Feels great.
I'm working on a reasonably complex Python project and have decided for the first time to consciously step away from systematic OOP and into the realm of somewhat-functional (but none of it is pure and it won't ever be). It's a comfortable hybrid for what I'm trying to make.
I haven't yet fully internalized my own conventions for it and keep doing inconsistent stuff that turns into bugs or "oh wait no that's garbage I shouldn't do that" moments, so i decided to just bap a document in the project root that outlines my vision for the Architecture of it, especially WHY I'm doing any of what i do in there.
While re-reading it, it occurred to me that this is the kind of shit a stupid LLM Agent would insist on making, and that made me sad.
I'm not going to like, not do it, or change the way I'd structure it, but the fact that I had the thought or concern at all is kind of miserable.
The wording on this is alert is incredible.
I spent all day looking forward to the time to go to bed, feeling the pull of comfy sheets and sleep, and now that it's 1am I want to do anything except that.
Brains are fucked up. Ban brains
This kind of shit is MUCH harder to implement than anticipated, but I think it was worth it?
(I'm making a thing that lets you assemble a manuscript structure and render it from markdown files that you edit using your favorite editor, whatever that is)
I really miss the era of Cassette Future Aesthetics storage media, tbh
On the third week of vacation, and it's only now genuinely feeling like it. I was really overdue.
I've been writing a lot, and it's been fun, I had missed having spoons for creative endeavours.
I setup a test install of Fedora 44 on my actual workstation, to see what the situation is like, and unfortunately nvidia on linux is still full of edge cases and "oh yeah it works but..."
So that's remaining a soft blocker, for the time being at least
PyPI now rejects uploads of new files to existing packages after 14 days, which sure is an improvement, but I was sitting there wondering why these are mutable at all, and why not like, hours instead of two whole weeks.
Turns out: it's because the "legacy" (current) API does not support staging releases at all. I hope when the new one drops this can be improved.
