Yes, that @oliphant@oliphant.social.

I sometimes work for the fedi and code stuff. I write about blocklists, and island networks and don't like nazis. I'm unfortunately a US citizen. Vegan for the animals and environment, not to lecture you with.

I stand with Ukraine 🇺🇦 , Palestine 🇵🇸, and Canada 🇨🇦, for the sovereignty of Greenland, for the rights of the trans community :Flag_Trans:, as I stand with any group denied rights or bullied by an aggressor, I oppose and will always oppose all wars of aggression regardless of rationale or excuse; and while my government is overrun with Nazis, I also stand against it.

I'm also a native of Minnesota, and fuck ICE.

I also host a few things as public services for others. That means you! Use them!

  • Posty - Turns a Mastodon or Pixelfed archive (whatever that looks like today) into a static HTML site. Chokes on larger archives (recommending running it locally in that case)
  • Pelago - Community moderation, island management, allowlists, blocklists, island networks, and federated discussion groups. All the stuff I wish had already existed for managing allowlists and creating easy networks between GTS islands, via the use of a single subscribeable feed. It also integrates with the FIRES and ActivityPub protocols. It's still in alpha.
  • FIRES - Island One - This is just a FIRES frontend on Pelago that mirrors the official  FIRES reference server
  • Blocklists - A mirror site for blocklists, including an "ad hoc" blocklist I have for my own use, stuff from fediblock or encountered in the wild.
  • Darkwire - E2E encrypted chat in-browser, ephemeral, and everything gets deleted when the last person leaves the room. (I did not make this)
  • Phanpy - Island One - This is currently pointed at a dev version of Phanpy with local-only post support for GoToSocial.
  • Nicolium - In case you prefer a different frontend. Source: Nicolium.
  • Lingva - Basically a proxy to Google Translate, but without the tracking.

Note: Only Posty and Pelago are made by me, I can't take credit for the others.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services @jonny@neuromatch.social @elduvelle@neuromatch.social This is a solved problem with GoToSocial. First, they allowed backdating statuses. Which allowed importing old statuses. One of the devs created a tool, Slurp, for this purpose. It uses your existing Mastodon archive. At this time, GoToSocial is the only platform I'm aware of that can handle not just account migration, but post migration as well. This page talks about migrating to GoToSocial and using Slurp to migrate posts.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services @jonny@neuromatch.social @elduvelle@neuromatch.social Yeah, it doesn't have to worry about the problems of running thousands on the same instance because it's not really designed for that. Although, if there was a large instance like that, they could just prevent it entirely by turning off backdated post imports at the server level in the config yaml. It's not so much that it can't handle large volume or large amounts of members migrating posts.... it probably can? It's just that no one has ever tested it. I'm not aware of anything I'd consider a "large" GTS instance, for one. I'm not aware of anyone with, say, 20k followers migrating to a GTS instance, or importing a massive archive to it.

It's up and running, Pelago ingesting blocklists and creating FIRES advisories.

https://archipelago.1sland.social/blocklist/IFTAS%2DDNI

If you scroll down, you can see the entire FIRES snapshot and subscribe to the dataset.

As changes happen over time, you'll see retractions in the feed.

cc: @thisismissem@hachyderm.io

You can also see an example of 'filtering' on this page, if you scroll down. Rather than silence which can mean anything, there's a suggested list of filters to be applied.

https://archipelago.1sland.social/blocklist/IFTAS%2DAUD

Note that the existing labels were surfaced from IFTAS: Shared Vocabulary - Labels, along with the translations (when available).

The filters come from the FIRES project itself.

Fuck, it's just 'madman' this and 'unhinged' and 'off his rocker' and 'psychotic' and we just don't have any words for this, do we, that don't lean all the way into "he's gotta be mentally ill!"

I'll say it again:

Mental illness is what we have dealing with him. Motherfucker has repeatedly traumatized us and the entire fucking world. Abuse is all he knows.

He's an abuser.

That's the word you're looking for.

And he's insecure. Most of his cabinet is. They are all terrified to change shoe sizes, FFS.

He's a insecure abuser and cult leader who has things going very bad for him right now, and he's flailing and lashing out the way any abuser and cult leader will when they see that their strategies are no longer working.

Sure, he has absolutely no self-restraint, no executive functions that tell him when to stop bloviating about bullshit, he has never gone to therapy and has a huge complex about a lot of things (penis size, windmills, etc) which might encourage you to start psychoanalyzing him, to explain what's "wrong" with him. To diagnose him with 'madness' or some kind of 'disease'....

As if an abuser needs or deserves that abandonment of accountability.

You could argue that abusers are fundamentally damaged, that there is something 'wrong' with them. That 'normal people don't act like this' or whatever it is that you say but what you don't realize you're doing at a time like this is throwing every person with mental illness under the bus.

And we have a need, our own obsession, with proposing explanations for why someone does something. And it's a quick trip to 'there must be something wrong with his brain.'

It's the same fucking brain that banned Muslims in his first term, threw out wild accusations of fraud based on nothing other than his feels, separated families as a policy of cruelty, and declared that sticking ultraviolet light up your bum might cure you of the covids.

If you want a single guiding thing, like if you're looking for the reason, the mechanism, the thing that drives Trump, MAGA, and the entire Right, it's not "madness".

It's insecurity.

That's it. It's the fear that 'everyone is laughing at them'. It's the desire to be so 'tough' and 'manly' that no one will ever dream of laughing at you again.

So it's 'department of war' and 'hardcore' videos of video game violence and bro high-fives and 'finally we an say the r-word again' and tradwives, and all the other insecurity-driven fetishes of the Right.

The absolute terror that they are, underneath it all, small and shrinking. And that we can all see it.

And so they overcompensate.

If you want to psychoanalyze, fine, but do it in the context of truly trying to understand, not to apply a dismissive pejorative label and dehumanize everyone with mental illness.

He's not "out of his mind."

He's deeply inside of it. An entire industry exists to ascribe to mental illness what is more readily explained as him just being a shit human being.

He's been "losing it" for a decade.

Maybe he never had it? Maybe you're still chasing the tail of this story, you think?

Maybe the answer was somewhere back at how he treated the Central Park Five, rather than trying to figure out what new malady might explain his being an insufferable fuckwart.

If you're looking for a good place to flag advisories not just on domains but also on actors themselves, check out https://pelago.1sland.social Once you log in with your fediverse handle (the credentials never leave your web browser) you can start reporting domains and actors, flagging them with labels if you want and even uploading screenshots and other documents here: https://pelago.1sland.social/reports This will populate a completely transparent feed. You can follow @pelago@olifant.social for announcements about updates to the community reports. Community moderators have the ability to escalate advisories to recommendations (or retract frivolous advisories, perhaps), with the entire feed visible in FIRES. Those who receive an advisory are welcome to also log in, contest the advisory or report, and provide counter evidence of their own (to the moderators, we aren't having troll wars in public here). And if you want to use Pelago to set up your own FIRES server and create your own advisories for your own moderation network, you certainly can. Feel free to log in, kick the tires, and let me know if you experience any issues. You can find out more about FIRES, which is a protocol designed for composeable moderation on the Fediverse, an evolution beyond blocklists. There was every attempt made to codify and set ethical boundaries in the software for this purpose. More about that, here. If you just want to browse or consume the FIRES datasets directly, that's at https://fires.1sland.social #Fediblock #FediblockMeta #Pelago #Moderation

Replying to
@jonny@neuromatch.social @FediTips@social.growyourown.services @elduvelle@neuromatch.social I should actually go one further here.... post migration is handled with Slurp via the Mastodon archive. And the thing about the Mastodon archive is that you don't have any posts in it you didn't write. Sure, you have replies to posts in a thread you created, maybe, or orphaned replies to other people's threads, but it's not like you can pull an export that includes other people's posts, too. So keeping actual post references intact rather than merely copying over the content of original posts so that they aren't lost, and replacing all existing references to that post to a copy of it on other new instances....that's a big difference. If we just go with the Mastodon archive as our source of preserving posts, we don't have the source data to recreate the thread in the first place, just the original posts from the author. With such fragmented data, you can see why we often throw orphaned mentions away (as I do with Posty) or Slurp refuses to include random mentions... On top of which, including random mentions would trigger a whole wave of notifications for post-dated posts, so Slurp just refuses to import those.

Just going to reiterate this shit.

"Human shields" means hostages. They are holding hostages.

You're never the good guy when you shoot the hostages.

Somehow the media and political class has transformed this into more of an excuse than a deterrent.

"You blew up a hospital."

"Well, they were using human shields."

That's not a period at the end of the sentence, or it shouldn't be. The immediate reply should be, "So you're saying they are hostages, and you blew up the hostages."

@lina@vt.social Ah, thank you, I think I see what you mean: Even if the block partially works (the instance B is posting from might not be able to mention/tag A, as their replies refuse delivery to that individual actor on A), that presumably doesn't stop B's instance (and maybe even A, depending on server software) from accepting their reply to A, hosting it on their instance, and thus making it an accessible post for others (C), while hiding it from the OP, due to the block.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services @FediGarden@social.growyourown.services Things like Fediverse Observer and FediDB started dropping many GoToSocial instances, after GTS started messing with scrapers ignoring the robots.txt by permitting admins to create ridiculous stats. This messed with the overall stats of the fediverse, so essentially a lot of GTS instances got wholly blacklisted from public directories, regardless of whether they enabled the 'spoof' setting or not. Which....I guess stopped those places from scraping GTS server endpoints. Some people are really mad at the authors over it, but all it's really done is take GTS off the official statistics board entirely.
